External filters- apps, whats best etc

A very simple query as my knowledge is lacking- what filter apps are available for processing audio?

I'm actually trying to recreate an external sound being processed by a Korg MS20 filter, but as their app is still IAA, I'm looking for alternatives.

Also, are there any that don't fit that brief but are just so good that they are "must haves"?

Thanks!

  • I'd love a Korg MS-20 filter too. It has a unique sound. Hopefully we both can be guided in the right direction.

No idea whether it has a model of the filter from the MS20, but among filter apps the JAF filter collection is highly regarded in terms of sound, if not perhaps in terms of UI. So many filters in there, sound is very high quality with some nice features like built-in modulation, saturation etc.

Although it’s not a filter app just yet I found the filters in Dagger synth can sound like an MS20. When I first started playing with it I was getting sounds very similar to this track which was done with an MS20.

  • The JAF app has them. I’m assuming volcano is modeling it in one of the filters there as well

  • Theres also an ms20 in mirack

  • If @giku_beepstreet goes through with making the Dagger filters available as effects then they would certainly earn a top spot in terms of quality

    This track is f*cking fabulous..

It is! I really like this album

  • No idea if these are anything like the MS20 filter, but AudioThing have Filterjam (free), and you can pipe stuff through Hilda’s multiple filter types if you load it in an effects slot.

  • Many thanks for all of the suggestions! :)

  • MiRack has an MS20 filter which is very serviceable but it lacks the resonant high pass filter that the MS20 has. A lot of its character comes from using the 2 in tandem so might be worth it to throw a resonant high pass in there with it.

Someone else mentioned Dagger and I agree. It’s not an exact replica but similar territory.

The VAPoly16 apps filter section is based on the MS20 and has a resonant low and high pass filter. Maybe we can convince the dev to release the filter section as an effect or update the current app to run in an effects slot.

Volcano can definitely get into similar territory.

I’ve had that collection on my list for a long while now. Would you recommend it? I’ve heard great things about it for sure. Despite the dev being a…character.

MiRack also has a type 35 dual “Vampyr” that has low 12db and high 6db based on the MS20

🤯🤯 thanks for this! I didn’t even think to search or look for the actual name (Sallen-Key). I never noticed this but that is fantastic. It’s my favorite filter ever so I’m stoked for this. Time to go make a preset so I can load it anywhere quickly 😂

    Cheers 😄 glad I could help 👍

  • If I remember correctly Audio Damage’s grind has a MS20 filter.

There are two filter types used in Korg MS-20. The earlier more aggressive one is the Sallen-Key filter used in Korg 35 chips and later one is cascaded OTA filter chip. Just to help you better find what you are looking for. 😅

I seriously doubt that I will be able to get that info- I'm recreating the sound for an artist who had this particular sound on his band's only top 20 UK hit, 40-ish years ago.

The guy who created it is still around, but I haven't had the chance to speak to him so I'm left guessing.

I will certainly check out these other filter suggestions. I need that type of filter modulated by an ADSR.

Mirack might be the simplest way of doing it.

@Anagram_R, if you have spare time, watch this video. It's about the differences between the old Korg 35 chip vs new OTA Filter.

Also the best emulator for MS-20 is Odin 2 synth, it’s not for iOS platform but desktop VST is free.
