  • I’d say he’s definitely a musical genius!

  • Well I think that Selected Ambient Work 2 is certainly the work of a genius.

I would say he made a lot of interestimg tracks but inwould not call him “genius”. Sometimes i feel like he is a bit overrated - people are making from him almost god-like figure.. But yes, he made few very imteresting tracks and back then in 90’s his approach to electronic music was pretty ahead of his time, one would say almost visdionsry.

So talented/creative/innovative - definitely (at least it was back then, i didn’t found anything innovative or geoundbreaking on his latest new tracks). “Genius” ? Don’t think so.

I tend to reserve word “genius” for people like Mozart, Beethoven, or in modern music Vangelis, Jarre, … or in terms of singing people like Freddie Mercury..

RDJ was (is) “just” very talented and open minded …

  • Yeah, defo, i too don’t love absolutely everything he’s done, but he’s pushed boundaries for more than thirty years now, made some beautiful stuff along the way and influenced generations of musicians, filmmakers and other artists.

  • I mean, yeah he is I’ve been into his work since analogue bubble bath 2 and didgeridoo and I have to say he is. He was a forerunner of idm (sorry braindance) and whilst I’m not a mega-fan or anything I have a hard time thinking of any artist in that genre that beats him, pound for pound. I love black dog and autechre and mike paradinas and loads of those idm guys, but none have had the crossover appeal that RDJ had imo. And I’m including BoC in that statement!

  • Overrated af. Some tunes are cool. Did nothing groundbreaking if you ask me. Latest output is super boring and dull.

  • feels like an oddly specific judgement thread,
are we really doing these kinds of ratings?
of whether he is a "genius"? genius being a problematic concept.

undeniably influential, arguably extremely creative, arguably "great". fan or not, that's kind of irrelevant. i don't like the beatles but i won't deny there IS collective "genius" embodied in the sound of those late 60s albums.

one person says, this is fantastic, another person says no it's not. can either person be more or less right? why does it matter?

what's the point? to find out how many people say yes and how many people say no, and calculate the average and pronounce him winner of x percent genius according to a few people on a forum?

forget about what's good (IE therefore rated, be it under or over). good is what we all agree on and is self censoring of emergent creativity.
    good, is fear.
to paraphrase Kenny Werner, Richard D James is perfect. and so am i. and so are you.

    not so much this question

Windowlicker is a genius track. Absolute and utter genius. Most of his output is meh for me. So I don't think personally he is a genius, but his influence on music has been significant

Don't take the question too literally. It is merely based on my disagreement with someone's statement in another thread, and then someone suggested we make a new thread of it. It will provoke some interesting discussion and that's the only real point.

BoC...earlier stuff was great, far more important to me personally than Aphex, last few albums, not so much. Again, it's just a matter of taste, often, and a lot of the time boils down to whether you heard something at the right time or not. Not to say that taste doesn't change - my own taste has changed significantly in recent years - but I think the stuff that makes the biggest impact on most people tends to be the stuff they listened to in their teens / early twenties.

  • Genius? Who cares. Brilliant? Undoubtedly 🍻

  • Pioneer? Definitely. Boundary pusher? For sure. Highly creative? Absolutely.

Genius … not sure. By comparison, Jacob Collier is definitely a genius - but I haven’t followed RDJ enough, or heard him speak enough to get a sense of that.

I think my favourite track of his is Avril 14th, which shows a gift for melody. Has been remixed many times, which shows just how much musicality was hidden in this simple melody.

  • Rdj is clearly a genius. I Love Richard’s sense of melody and he has hundreds of amazing tracks. The Analord series is my favorite album. Nobody else is in the same league as rdj imo.

He definitely held up better than his mate, Luke Vibert / Plug / Wagonchrist and all his other monikers. Did so much great stuff back in the day, I was a huge fan, but imo the quality of his releases went down the pan badly years ago and has never recovered.

  • Shout out to Amen Andrews! 🍻

Indeed! Now that was some good shit right there!

  • Well, the thread title is a bit loaded but thank for going to the effort @Gavinski 🙂

I have no idea what genius is so I’m going to go with ‘is he overrated?’

And the thing about RDJ is that I think you need to understand the context to fully appreciate just how impactful he has been. For me it is not ‘do I like listening to him the most?’ Most important to me is that he broke the rules. He broke the rules on genre melding, sound selection and design, approach to hardware, playing live, dealing with record labels, handling the media, even the weird in-joke childish stuff that I never clicked with was an FU to the rule book.

And, put this together with some INCREDIBLE ground breaking releases both in the underground rave/club zone AND in the more mainstream ‘home listening’ area, and you have a remarkable artist with truly global influence.

    Lots I'd agree with there!

  • Yes, he is a genius. I administered an IQ test to him and he scored above 150. He is also a member of Mensa. Discussion over.

    Sure you were 😂

Actually if he still has all his hair, I'm a bit jealous of that. I did have a quick Google for a recent pic but this is all I found 🤷‍♂️

  • But if I could go back to being 18, knowing what I know now, RDJ wouldn’t have nothing on me
