Is Quim Barreiros a genius or what?

edited August 2023 in Other Music Content

Quim Barreiros is a national treasure, all your fancy "genius" have got nothing on him.

A Cabritinha

A garagem da vizinha

Mestre de culinária

But he's also a serious musician:

“Chula da Póvoa”

“O Homem da Gaita”

If that ain't genius I don't know what is.

literally the worst type of music in the world. When I'm near people playing this music live, I have thoughts of murder.

I'm noticing a trend. Perhaps you might like to talk to someone?

  • Now I know that @pedro is Portuguese
Wow... Been some years since I listened to Quim Barreiros
Although my girlfriend doesn't know them and was shocked with some lyrics I was singing one of these days

Actually it's Pimba, a portuguese folk genre.
I'm brazilian, so i'm guessing by Nordestina you're thinking of Forró which is more known out there in the world
But there are other variants like Xote, Xaxado, Baião, etc.

  • Did anyone else snigger at his first name being “Quim”?

  • edited August 2023

Actually it’s more than pimba. Quim Barreiros predates pimba by many years, he comes from a long lineage of portuguese folk music, rooted in the rural interior of Portugal. The nordestino sound is an evolution of the early portuguese settlers bringing their instruments and songs to Brasil.
There was always a tradition of spicy lyrics, with sexual puns. For instance in the desgarrada (a type of call and response not unlike a rap battle), that in Brasil became the embolada.
But QB was one of the first if not the first to make it mainstream.
Many other artists copied him, one of the first had a hit called “nós pimba” (don’t know how to translate it, “we knock it”), and the term catched as an umbrella for all these types of songs.
But this is roots-portugal as legit as it gets.

Don’t you dare mocking our national pride if you know what’s good for your health

But you have to understand, before the revolution of 1974 it was mandatory for everyone over 12 to grow a mustache.
    Yeah, women too.

  • Actually this weekend is party in my grandparents little rural village, and I am volunteering so I’m sure I’ll be listening to Quim Barreiros several times.

But this summer’s hit in that department is this:

But that deserves a whole case-study

A bit like Liverpool in the 1980s then.

I met liverpool in the 90’s, does that count? Not a particularly fond memory

  • But not a bad one either 😅

  • Anyways if you guys need more Accordion noises, just PM me.
No really, it’s no bother at all

  • Guilty as charged @michael_m

  • I know how it feels when you think you have enough accordion noises, only to learn you hadn’t enough accordion noises

Haha. I can see the resemblance, I’m saving this for later reference
But this is really a case-study, it was like a spontaneous reaction from the crowd during (our version) of the price is right, and it worked so well they made it a hit
Incidentally this guy is also Ana Moura’s partner and father of her child. The same Ana Moura that sung with Prince

Clearly, nothing you've written here can possibly be true! I suggest you go back to the parallel universe from which you came lest things become very weird, and with haste please!

@Bruques I don’t think you want me to pull out a…

    UNO REVERSE CARD!!!!

  • Now do you 🕶

  • On a brighter subject: you’ll probably won’t hear from me for a week

  • @pedro said:

Is this a double bluff? Have you been reverse uno carding this whole time? Grrrrrrrr

  • All of this is extremely suspicious, not least of all how uno reverse sounds similar to universe. Are you from a parallel unoreverse?
