Recommend me some sample manglers?

I never really worked much with samples before despite having tens of gigs of them sitting on my iPad, but now I'm getting into Logic I've been finding myself using samples a bit more, but also a bit meh about what Logic can do with them. Anyone got any tips on apps that really let you get wild with them in real time? I'm not even sure what I'm looking for really.

Looperator and a bunch of those other SugarBytes FX apps, basically all their FX apps. Maybe Glitchcore? And so many others. Then all the granular stuff - load samples into FRMS, Spacefields, Borderlands etc. Samplr.

  • I second SugarBytes.

  • Good news is I've got nearly all of those, including pretty much every Sugarbytes app. Borderlands is new to me though.

  • Bleass Samplewiz 2 is simple to use yet very powerful.

Lol. They are easy to horde, lol.

Let me ask you… are you talking about samples in general or more specifically sample loops, one shots, Multisampled instruments, etc…?

    For samples In general

slicing apps are always fun like sEGments, reslice, and koala.

Granular synths can load samples and play them in new ways.

Glitchy fx like Replicant 3, glitchcore, MonoGranulator, and even koala fx which has a bunch of fx in one, including stutter and chop.

Audio AU’s or loopers, like Gauss, Enso, etc that can do some interesting stuff.

There’s lots of approaches here. Koala with the IAPs can do a lot with any sample.

  • Gauss, Enso and Samplewiz are all ones I hadn't thought of. I think part of the problem here is that now that I use Logic and it groups plugins by developer I've forgotten what apps I actually own because they're not all there in front of me, so I keep going back to the same few.

  • Samplr is fun, also the Flexi Sampler in Drambo lets you scratch them, slice them, reverse them and add plenty of capable effects.

True that, owning too many plugins creates a new problem: Remembering them all 😄

  • Ooooh, Fluss is pretty great.

  • I love Samplewiz 2. I use it on my iPhone, iPad, and MacOS. I love to import and edit samples in it on the hoof on my iOS devices, then continue the work in Ableton later.

    Koala Sampler is another favourite.

Anything granular would be nice for processing samples too. There are so many examples.

Samplr would certainly be worth exploring, as would Borderlands Granular.

Another vote for Gauss and Fluss here too.

    Good list. I’ll add Loopmix

  • Loopy Pro (with or without AUv3) is a great sampler mangler. Especially if you use sequencers and what-not to control slicing and muting etc

Some examples can be found in this thread
    https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/51428/slice-dice-randomizing-resampler-and-discombobulator

  • Spacecraft? FRMS? Drambo? PaulXStretch? Tardigrain? Those are all good places to mess with samples

Never got around to using Werkbench or Sector but they seem great.

  • I don’t think I’ve seen Fieldscaper or Soundscaper yet but they can definitely mangle some samples. Fieldscaper especially. Dawnbeat, Elastic Drums, Egoist, 7XWAVE, Ableton Note, Beatsurfing 2, Strokes, and iVCS3/Mood can all do it as well. And as mentioned, any granular synth. Quanta, FRMS, Grain Science, etc.

  • I love you all. Thanks fam.

  • Logic's Beat Breaker is great. As is the built in Sample Alchemy.

Both of those are up there with the best sample manglers on iOS in my very humble opinion...

  • Beatcutter but its more of a sample maker.

  • Glitchscaper too, I’m actually using it now to mangle some Bob Marley songs

That reminds me, I need to use Glitchscaper as an effect more. I’ve only really used it as an instrument. Thanks for the reminder 😆

Really… I need to learn more about GS.

  • If you want the best Mangler buy a Roland vsynth xt or the original vsynth keyboard

I’d say the Octatrack is a pretty good mangler as well. The Vsynth is cool though.

  • Moebius Lab and iDensity in standalone are great sample manglers.
