Thoughts on the new Yamaha Revstar?
I like the shape (all frets are accessible)
Stainless steel frets for less than 1K is a great deal.
I like Yamaha guitar.
But, 0 stock in my local store.
Any thoughts?
There is 3 "level". Low ($600) medium ($1000) high (2K+ made in Japan).
The medium is on my radar.

Looks cool
But I’d say get a les Paul, I’m biased
Never had a guitar with stainless frets, curious if they are any better. If you get it post a review here
A Les Paul is about twice as much as the most expensive Revstar, right?
I played a Revstar about 5 years ago in a Guitar Center. I liked the way it felt.
Yes, 100%, they are better.
It's harder to make a guitar with stainless steel frets. But for the player, there is 0 downside.
I like the look.
I honestly thought they only made acoustics.
Didn’t Gibson guitars go to shit recently?
I have a Yamaha strat type guitar - Pacifica. I don’t play it much but for the cost it’s a very decent guitar. Yamaha guitars get great reviews in general. I’m sure it’d be a pretty nice guitar.
The quality of Gibson guitars = the quality of luthiers they hire.
Since 2019, it's a disaster for the price you pay.
I like stainless steel frets on my guitar, they're smooth, I'm not going back to nickel.
I almost bought one of those Revstars. They're very well made. The action was a little high on the one I tried (the mid-priced model in blue). It wasn't something I would have worried about, it just needed a set-up. It is a gorgeous guitar in person, but the body was significantly bigger than I expected.
It sounded really great but what I realised was that I wasn't fond of the focus feature, I found it to be too dark and I wondered if I'd ever use it that way. So it seemed to me like a feature that added weight for no benefit to me. The neck was nice, a little fat and it felt smooth.
The main things I thought were that it sounded good- the pickups are not too high output, it's great for clean tones. It pushed overdrive pedals nicely. It is beautiful and it was immaculately assembled, the frets were perfect. It's a great guitar at its price or even for quite a bit more money, but it wasn't what I needed.
Matteo likes them.
I haven't actually looked at the vid but thought the title kinda funny
You could also look at Reverend guitars, which are really excellent. To me it seems pretty clear that it was the “inspiration” for Yamaha’s Revstar series. They even ripped off the name.
They have double-cut and set-neck models too.
Stainless steel frets are great. They last longer, what’s not to like? I also love roasted maple necks, as they look and feel great, and don’t react nearly as much to humidity changes.
Yamaha make great guitars, not a fancy name, doesn't make you feel cool, but their guitars play exceptionally well for the price. Some of their guitars actually play better than much more expensive guitar brands.
I have two Yamahas and I totally agree.
I have a Gibson studio 96 and a 2021 epi 60s les Paul. The epi is the best guitar I’ve ever played maybe I got lucky and got a good one but for 700 bucks it plays better than my Gibson. I should have been clearer about that in my post I was referring to the epiphone. I do believe Gibson guitars are way overpriced they are not worth 3000 dollars, absolute scam on thier part
I’ve got the standard hum bucket version of the new series and a p90 version of the old. My 2 favorite guitars, hands down. Play and sound like guitars that cost twice as much. (Oddly enough, I have that same Reverend 390 too - love it, but I’ll part with that long before the revstars.
Yamaha have been making some of the best, under-appreciated, guitars (acoustic and electric) of the last 50 years. The Revstars are amazing value for money.
Revstar Element $550 amazing quality for the money.
Yamaha guitars don't seem very popular here in the states, except for their begineer Pacifica package.
This Revstar looks pretty decent for the money, set-neck. Kind of reminds me of their 90s AEX-502, but that was a bolt-on.
Image of the AEX-502 from Reverb:
No, Gibson has been shit for a long time. Also was part of a violent transnational organized crime syndicate under Henry, smuggling endangered wood poached from a national park among other offenses, but that’s a different story.
Would note too that the old Yamaha superfighter is the inspiration for the Revstars. And that the reverent senseis were clearly inspired by the same yammy classic.
Love Reverends, have had 3, all were awesome. Great bang for your buck
I like quite a few of his videos, but his titles ahave been getting a little clickbaity lately.
Doesn’t seem too much different from a Yamaha SG1000. They have been around for years, and are a great guitar for the price.
Almost twice the price of the mid-range price of the Revstar. But it looks good indeed.
I have one of the new ones ... here it is...
Played a Strat for ...ever ... but mine had a particularly narrow neck ( a 'thing' for early 70's examples apparently ) . Over time I found it too cramped (yup, aging fat fingers !) so I treated myself to a new Revstar just because I like the shape! lol
It took AGES to come ... as in nearly 12 months ( huge demand plus COVID apparently ) but it finally arrived a few months ago.
I got the Standard ( middle of the range ) and now we've got to know each other a bit, I love it. The build is outstanding, the neck much more comfortable for me, and as I hoped it represented great value especially compared to the the Fender/Gibson 'equivalents'.
Of course it isn't an investment guitar, but it sounds great, looks awesome and the P90 pickups are extremely versatile representing a kind of mid point between single coil and humbuckers.
Came with a really nice gig bag ( need to go for the Pro model for a hard case ... $$$$ )
Got mine from Sweetwater. Great communication while I was waiting ... still had to wait though!
I dont have any reservations recommending it
I love stainless frets, had them on a Parker Nitefly (RIP) and thought they were a joy to play on. Definitely miss that on my current Ibanez.
Also, good call on the medium range. My current S-series Ibanez I decided to splurge on the higher end $2k+ Japan made version over my previous $1200 versions, and not sure I really think it’s worth it. Amazing build quality, but the set up was weak and really let it down for the price I paid.
Different companies, but same idea I’ve heard.
Beautiful.
@ltf3 Beautiful Revstar. What is the Strat in the background? Headstock looks different. JV?
Not sure what JV means?
It is a '72 - 73' hardtail Strat ( no whammy bar ) which I've had for most of my life! Found it it a local shop that sold organs and pianos for a couple of hundred dollars ... way back in 1981 (?). I replaced the pickups with Kinman vintage style single coil noiseless pickups which make it sound like a million bucks ( kept the original hardware of course ).
But it does have a thin neck ... there's a noticeable gap between the neck and the body where the neck slots in. Pretty common from Strats of this age ... sloppy manufacturing basically.
It's been extremely solid however ... travelled the world, been heavily played and had lots of 'adventures'. ha. A real trooper.
Japanese Vintage?
Ah, thanks!
No , this one is “Made in the USA” … not something to get excited about during the ‘70’s I understand 😉
However as time marches on, guitar enthusiasts get more interested in them … because of the crappyness?
But there’s no universe where the Revstar isn’t a superior instrument. Although individual tastes can make a huge difference ! ( but I’m confident…. 😉)
