[SOLVED] New iPad, problems with buffer size.

I recently got a 9th gen iPad, iOS 16, and reinstalled Auria (then upgraded it to Auria Pro by restoring my purchases).

I tried to use Model 15 as inter-app and ran into serious sound quality issues. Curiously, as a MIDi instrument, it works just fine.

Investigating the issue, I discovered that I cannot select a proper buffer, which might be the cause of the IAA sound issues.

Every time I select a buffer, Auria Pro will state a different "currently using" value. For instance, if I select 512, it will show "512 (currently using 470)".

Tried rebooting the iPad and loading different and new projects, with or without loading any instrument. If possible, I would want to avoid a complete reinstall since the process of restoring purchases and upgrading to Auria Pro is quite cumbersome, so I'd want to do it only as a last ditch attempt to fix the issue.

Did anyone ever bump into this? Any ideas on how to fix it?

DISCLAIMER: I also posted this on the Auria forum. Posting here as well in case it's a known iPad/iOS issue (i hope not). I'll try to replicate the bug with Garageband as well as soon as it finishes downloading.

  • What Sample Rate are you using?

  • I’ve had this issue crop up from time to time.
Only noticed it in Auria, but it may be happening in other DAWs as well.
It only happens if I’m using the iPad’s internal speakers.
Issue goes away if I’m connected to an external audio interface (Motu M2 in my case).
I’ve also sometimes cleared the problem by creating a new project from scratch in Auria, but you mentioned you’ve already tried that?

44.1k as always. Never once found this issue with my older 1st gen iPad Pro 9.7.

  • Disable Siri, because that messes with buffer size.

Ha. Yes, I'm using the internal speakers here. Do you think using headphones would make a difference, or for some reason I have to use an interface (unlike before: on my old iPad, Auria would work with the internal speakers just fine)? Yes, I tried about everything short of a reinstall.

Will try this ASAp and thank you a lot. It's a new iPad, that might be it!

If it is a new ipad and you aren't using an external audio interface, that is why you see the weird buffer sizes if you are using 44.1k inside Auria. Your iPad only does 48k natively (that is the case for most iPads manufactered after 2018). Auria will run projects at 44.1K but there are shenanigans to make that work -- unless you have an interface connected.

If you don't have an interface, you should use 48K in Auria on your new iPad.

  • And if you aren't running with an audio interface, the IAA you are running is probably running at 48k. Is there a reason you are using the IAA rather than AU version of the Moog app?

And this solved everything. Many thanks! This is a bad move by Apple imho: my older iPad didn’t have this restriction and I cannot I see a reason why force this upon users, but what do I know? 48k it is then.

Again, thank you a lot indeed. Is there a way to mark this as “solved”?

Yes, the AU interface is clunky and I have difficulty accessing some features I need (the iCloud patch browser, the arpeggiator engine etc).

    Thank you!
