High And Blind - Guitar-Driven Indie Rock 🎸🥁🎤

Tracked and mixed in Logic Pro. The guitar tone is from pedals (with a Strymon Iridium providing the amp and cab sim), the distortion is from a Walrus 385. All the other FX are AUv3 plugins, with Other Desert Cities being used and abused everywhere.

Vocal processing is very straightforward: Logic compressor in Opto mode, DDMF MagicVerb, a smidge of tube distortion from Saturn, and some low-cut EQ.

Drums were programmed manually in Logic.

I worked hard to make the arrangement as exciting as possible, especially the pre-chorus riff and the breakdown in the middle. Hopefully that comes across :)

Lyrics in the spoiler:

So alive you're feeling dead
You're not sure you’ll get out of bed
And will the voices in your head
finally go to sleep?

Hold on now, the waiting is over
Hold on now, can you please?

You try to hide
You're such a bad liar
You try to hide but you're beat

High and blind and feeling so tired
Lost and bound for defeat

Is this the end it's been too slow
You're not sure how it's meant to go
And will those voices that you know
Finally let you sleep?

Is this the end you want to know
You’re not sure how it’s meant to go
And will those voices that you know
Finally go to sleep

Hold on now, the waiting is over
Hold on now, can you please

You try to hide
You're such a bad liar
You try to hide but you're beat

High and blind and feeling so tired
Lost and bound for defeat

  • Great track Richard! A bit away from your usual dream pop / shoegaze territory, nice !!!
I like the drumming which reminds me of some songs from Broken Social Scene. Great work on the guitars too. I'll give it a few more listen, but it is good 👍

  • Did start from scratch for the drum programming? Or did you use some of the drummer parts as a starting point ?

This time I programmed the drums from scratch, using the drum sequencer, then added fills where needed.

I've made a whole bunch of templates for the drum sequencer, with kick and snare patterns and high-hat patterns etc... I wish there was an easy way to share them, but Logic for iPad is not good at sharing presets.

I never truly left, I just stopped being much active here because I stopped trying new stuff since my older iPad had reached enormous stability and I kind of lost hope for some stuff that I was kind of accepting would never come to the iPad (how wrong I was btw). Having to buy a new iPad stirred things a bit. Do you still use an Air 2?

No I moved to a 10.5 iPad Pro in 2019, and then a 12.9 M1 at the end of last year. I'm hoping the M1 will last as long as the Air 2 did, which was almost five years.

  • When I heard the first few seconds, I could feel a big grin on my face. It reminded me a little bit of one of my favorite Modern English songs. This brings back some nice memories. Thanks for creating and posting this.

I love Other Desert Cities. It’s more than just an effect. It’s almost an instrument in itself.

    Thanks for listening :)

The only Modern English track I know is "Melt With You", which is an amazing song, one of my favourite songs from the eighties. I should really check out the rest of their stuff.

  • Lovely work. Aside from anything else I’m envious of your drum programming skills but nonetheless grateful it’s not a requirement. I’m finding Logic is generally stable, especially if you don’t use certain third party AUs - how was it for you?

Yeah, there is your quality signature all over it. Love guitar from the start of the second half, and you decided to guard it like it is forbidden fruits! ;) So I listened five times just to experience this part again. Great song! 🤩

For the most part I find Logic to be pretty stable, and I use a ton of third-party AUv3s.

However I have encountered some issues:

    • If I close a project to return to the File Browser Logic crashes almost every single time.
    • ButterSynth often crashes, this is a known issue. If I use that synth I bounce to audio ASAP.
    • If I try and convert the timeline to Live Loops the timing gets messed up, every time without fail

Those are the issues I've encountered, they are annoying, but not showstoppers.

Thanks! I agree that in most cases you should put the most exciting riff right at the start of the song (Sweet Child of Mine style), but sometimes it's worth leaving it until later to create a buildup and a change of pace.

Anyway, you listened 5 times, so it kinda worked :) Thanks for taking the time, much appreciated.

  • Love it! Nice job on the drums programming and the guitars!
