Crossposted and lightly edited from another thread:

As a fan of the Radiophonic Workshop, and of emulating the sainted @Hainbach’s methods in software as much as possible, here’s an app I would buy in a heartbeat:

A faithful recreation of a varispeed 3 head stereo reel to reel tape recorder, no more, no less, as in: you could ‘manually’ flange the sound by touching the reels (which RE1 tape machine sort-of emulates already), mess with speeds, make ‘tape loops’ chinagraph-marked, edited, colour coded, ‘sellotaped to a board’ and reassembled with a razor block analogy, run the loops round an external pivot point of arbitrary length, switch off the erase head(s) for sound on sound, (more than one head = instant Space Echo options, especially if the ‘head spacing’ can be manipulated); incorporate tape characteristic emulations, wow and flutter, valve saturation, etc …

You could include basic quality of life improvements over the original arduous physical processes, of course, like, say, being able to duplicate multiple copies of a length of tape with a keystroke , or set the length of a tape loop precisely in minutes, seconds, or frames from a dialog box, include Ableton sync, and innovations like Hainbach’s Destruction Loops, where a virtual blade could progressively degrade the tape… of course, you can do all these things easier in a DAW or with a tape delay app, but something which let you emulate not just the end result but the work flow of musique concrete, do virtual tape assembly composition a la Stockhausen or Schaeffer and so on, would really be something in encouraging the ‘think different’ approach…

  • This kinda thing would be lovely, something really designed to take advantage of the touch interface and as you say, encourage experimentation - even if it was standalone, perhaps even better as those hard limits can breed creativity…

Yep, I agree. Very touch intensive, and as long as you can export the final output as a wav easily to Files and AudioShare, it doesn’t need to be an AUV3 (though I wouldn’t argue if it was.)

  • I love this idea but it would definitely have to be auv3 and capable of recording when in an fx slot for me to be likely to regularly use it. And it would have to have no clicks or other noises caused by utilising the basic looping function - none on playback, none on pressing or depressing record.

  • I actually wonder if a really tightly locked down loopy pro setup would do the trick? All the interactions and graphics would be non skeuomorphic, but it would have the advantage of supporting either au plugins or being one itself, and probably having longevity as a working app…

  • I am sure you are right, but for whatever reason, Loopy Pro is one of those apps (along with Drambo) which just doesn’t seem to click with me.

I think what would, would be the whole skeumorphic simulation, actually dragging clips of tape on and off a clipboard, manually slowing the reels, seeing a tape loop dragged out around a pencil or a mike stand, so you are forced to emulate the old school workflow to an extent. Kind of like that modular synth puzzle game The Signal State:

    https://store.steampowered.com/app/1577620/The_Signal_State/

The surrounding ambience of the workspace, and the absolute locked down focus on it being a ‘real’ tape recorder with all its inherent limitations would be the whole point.

Yeah, that would be great, I’m having terrible trouble clicking with loopy too, while it’s a work of genius, I just get lost in the options…

Having spent my entire university time on and around the splicing block editing reel-to-reel for my media studies course, I'm very grateful that koala and Gauss do not make me cut and splice tape! But go for it. For me having 4 instances of Gauss in Aum and strictly no more for example, gets me as close as I'd actually like to get to a restricted workflow like that :)

Clicking, really? Wow, it's very hard to find the perfect looper

Ah shoot typo, “terrible trouble clicking “ is what I meant… I’ve corrected it now…

  • Ah @Krupa, you mean you have trouble physically clicking on something in the loopy pro app?

Ah ffs clicking with, teach me to post one handed while fighting the cat off my breakfast preparation 😅

    Actually, looks like reader error…

Ah hahaha, indeed it is, I understand now lol. My brain has been so traumatised by loopers that click when they shouldn't that it misinterpreted your message 😂

  • Interesting idea, I’d be interested in trying such a thing, though I’m not sure I’d use it a huge amount.

I do have an open reel deck, an Akai 4000, though there are multiple variations on that model, not sure which mine is. It’s been in a box for about 30 years, heaven knows if it still works. At some point when I’m feeling brave and can clear enough space I should probably fetch it out and see.

  • Sounds a bit like the Tape Mode on the OP-1. Which is loads of fun, especially hand cranking it.

Something similar would make for an excellent app.

  • Erik Sigth made Shapesynth a thing a bit like the OP1 tape function, I think:

    https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/shapesynth/id431097161

The tape functionality is a lot of fun, a pointer towards what Reel to Real could be…

  • I think it could be done with LP and a few other tape sim apps.

It would sure be nice in one package with reels you can manually play with. Clips where you could add tape damage at specific points would be ace. You can simulate that already with a sim like reelbus and some automation.

  • I'd love to have an app that simulates the OP-1 workflow, except instead of internal synths it could host AUv3 synths. :)

I've also always been a fan of that tape snaps effect you find in Mixbox. I'm trying to remember what else has that built in
