Song Of The Month Club - September 2023

What is the Song of the Month Club?

It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.

The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.

The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, can be the most useful and can help the artist to grow and improve and correct their mistakes.

All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. We like all kinds of music and we are particularly fond of vocals (but of course we still love a great instrumental). If you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.

We ask that you only post one song per month in this thread - if you're lucky enough to be able to produce more, then please just submit your strongest material

And finally, iOS is not a requirement for posting here. If you've recorded your song using nothing but a ukulele and a Fostex 4 track, that's fine.

  • My entry for the month, lyrics in the spoiler:

What we say and what we do
Baby do these things make sense to you?
And all the clouds in the way
Are gonna blow them all away?

And it’s so sad to see
But I think that you’ll agree
And it’s so sad to say
But someone’s gonna say it anyway

    What’s it to you?
Tell me how we gonna make it through?
    Cos all that I know
Is honey I have never felt so low

If you stay, and say I do
Will that help us to renew
    And all that we are
Well maybe we can cover up the scars

Well here am I but where are you?
Darling can we see the dark days through?
Cos if you think you can stay
Take my hand and lead the way

Cos it's so sad to see
And I hope that you agree
That we've both lost our way
So tell me what you want to hear me say

    What’s it to you?
Tell me how we gonna make it through?
    Cos all that I know
Is honey I have never felt so low

If you stay, and say I do
Will that help us to renew
    And all that we are
Well maybe we can cover up the scars

Great job on the production, sounds so different from the initial draft you let me hear !
I really like the contrast between verses and chorus for your vocals. Small suggestion: it could be nice to try harmony on the pre-chorus (so sad to see etc...), with a brighter sound but I bit distant in the mix.

Tout posted the track 4 days ago and anyway 560 listen, wow ! 😲

  • I like the sounds of the synths and the natural mix of them without being too overpowering.👍

Thanks for listening. If I get the chance I can try your suggestion with the harmony, it might help to lift that section.

It's a new "feature" in SoundCloud Pro, when you upload a new track they supposedly play it to at least 100 listeners. To be honest I'm not convinced that these are real people, it looks like an army of bots to me 🤷‍♀️

Thanks for listening and taking the time to comment, much appreciated. 🙏

  • @richardyot that instrumental hook is fantastic! Total ear candy. Good song, nicely produced and deserves to be heard…by 500+ folk in 4 days?! Absolutely the song deserves that, but what are soundcloud doing? I want to know how many folk have genuinely listened, not garbage false statistics. I’m on an old legacy “pro” version which doesn’t seem to have this “feature” thankfully

Thanks for listening, and for noticing the instrumental hook :)

After I wrote the chords and melody I thought the song needed an instrumental hook, and for some reson I had the guitar line to Every Breath You Take in my head (not my usual type of reference lol), so it's kinda based on that, just not as good 🤣

the SoundCloud thing is called First Fans, you can read about it here:

    https://help.soundcloud.com/hc/en-us/articles/16680415453979-First-Fans

  • Good song as always, takes you on a journey and keeps things interesting.

i like the synths and the melodies are good.

If I’m being critical, the vocals in the verses aren’t quite as strong as in the chorus, I think you sound more confident in the higher registers on this song.

    Here’s mine.

(I’ve already posted in the Creations forum a day or two ago…)

Vocals are from the singer in my old band, from a song I recorded about 15 years ago, chopped up and made into Instruments playable on the keyboard in Logic’s Sampler (Mac)

Drums are mostly from my DrumBrute Impact, which got some tweaks whilst recording it in.

It’s a mono machine (with extra outputs for some of the channels) but I just recorded it in mono this time. For the first half I used FAC Bandit to put a delay on just the high frequencies to make the high hats bounce about.

I forgot to pan the additional hi hats i overdubbed in the final ‘chorus’ section but I actually quite like them down the middle.

And obviously the “Angel” and “Machine” are from Speak n spell. With added vocoder.

  • And here's mine.

This is a music track that I improvised on two MIDI keyboards connected to Bitwig Studio on a desktop PC. There the MIDI was routed to Solo for the oboe, viola, and English horn, as well as to Omnisphere and Twin 3 for the background instruments.

After bringing the audio recording into Vegas Pro, I applied the Lurssen Mastering Console plug-in to the audio mix.

    It's titled The Long Day.

  • Due to a lack of recent inspiration I hope you don’t mind but I’m posting a song called One More from my 2019 album Golden Years as my entry this month. Listening to the track today for the first time in ages, I can’t help but feel I’d do a better job of both the recording and production now, but I still like the actual song.

    Please just one more
    For the road
    One more verse
    One line
    One word.

    One more memory
    To be re-lived
    One more sorrow
    One more gift.

    Just one more,
    Then I'll pack away
I cannot draw my eyes away
    From pictures
    Painted by your pen
Of bright new dawns to journey’s end

    One more
    (I tell myself)
    Is fine
    Be satisfied by these words
But once again I am entranced
By gentle movements of your dance.

One more, one more it has to be
And maybe this will set me free
But one more couldn’t raise a smile
    Even as I stayed awhile

For in those final words I read
Were all the things I’d learned to dread
One more blow upon my heart
One more dulling of the spark, it’s
Twisting, it’s turning, a spiralling end
A painful farewell, my trusted friend

I always love the sound design in your tracks, in this case the bass patch is delicious: fat, warm, and beautiful to listen to.

The vocals, both the speak and spell and the sampled ones, work well and create interest and texture. The drums go well with the semi-industrial electronic vibe, and the arrangement is well put together.

Where did you get the speak and spell vocals from, do you actually own one?

The dual guitars are the highlight of the track for me. The steel-string rhythm guitar is really satisfying, and the nylon-string lead is beautiful - I love the sparse melodies being played, they're very effective.

Vocals are well-performed and well-recorded, and the overall production sounds good to me.

I honestly don't know if they're making a sincere effort to get music heard (an effort which is being undermined by the prevalence of bullshit accounts on the platform), or whether they are cynically inflating the metrics by using bots and fake accounts. Who knows?

It does mean that the metrics are completely untrustworthy though, you can pretty much ignore play counts on SC now.

And obviously the metrics are meaningless anyway, play counts mean nothing without engagement. If these play counts resulted in more followers and fans they would be worth something, but I think for most people that's not how it's going to pan out.

Without wanting to derail this month’s SOTMC, I think this is a huge backward step by SC. I read their blurb in the link you posted and I’m seriously questioning whether I should use them going forwards.

The speak and spell set is a logic instrument I have had for ages. I can't remember where I originally found the samples.

Nice classical guitar, nicely mixed into a folk-ey song with a nice arc.

Production wise all the main elements are well recorded and mixed. If I was the producer I'd want to replace the strings and make them fit the sonic palette of the rest of the song a little better but that's a minor point and I'm looking for things to nitpick! The only other suggestion I'd have if you were to re-mix it would be the ending. It's a good ending from a song POV but the fade is a little bit awkward. As I said though, these are minor nitpicks and the kinds of details I like to be told about my little ditties :-)

I'm always impressed with 'proper' songs with well arranged structure that tell a story. This song would work equally well played live with one guitar which is the mark of a real song. Unlike mine!

    Good stuff! :-)

Thank you for listening so attentively and your insightful comments - I think you’re right about the strings. Re endings, with my songs which all tend to be structured, I normally try to avoid fade-outs as I think it’s a bit lazy but I vaguely remember deliberately choosing to fade this to give the impression of the story teller stomping off into the distance after he’d said his piece 😂

    I'll get my coat

I mainly avoid fades too, but sometimes they are the best solution.

Talking of SoundCloud shenanigans, isn't it funny how similar Arial Eland and Janice Pittman look?

It's also notable how many attractive women are taking such an interest in my music 🤣

This isn't really a new thing, because these fake accounts set up to try and scam musicians for fake metrics have been around for years, but now there is the added possibility that SoundCloud themselves are leaning into this kind of bullshit.

That’s the disappointing find, they are probably doing this to justify that marketing shill. 😳 Is there any other significant advantage to SoundCloud Pro?

Other than having hordes of hot girls listening to your tracks, I think the main benefit is more storage space 🤣

Love the opening. It grabs you right away with a sense of motion and expectation. I also like whatever effects you’re using to place the voice above the music. It’s especially cool when your voice seems to shift from one space to another, in relation to the current mix of instruments. Incredible sonics on this one.

Cool sci-fi vibe. Sets the imagination going for a high-tech scene and plot to do the music justice. Feels futuristic and retro at the same time. Perhaps a retro-themed bar in the electro-mechanical 23th century.

I think the recording and production values are fine (even if 2019 does seem like a long time ago). Your voice sounds a little hoarse here compared with your more recent ones. Was that deliberate? It perfectly suits this superb song. Nimble guitar work, too. Like a fine wine, this one has aged well.
