AudioKit Digital D1 alternative?

I opened this up yesterday and it crashed on me. When I thought about it I remembered a few crashes at different times when opening it, so I would like to have an alternative available.

Can anyone recommend an app that falls in the same ball park as far as sounds go? What I had in mind yesterday was the airy string section sounds of PCM synths.

had a similar issue, it was in my armoury and I love those type of sounds. But everytime I used it in garageband IOS, it would fallover at some stage.

Alchemy is GB/Logic has some good airy string sounds, but I'd also be tempted to look at Tera Pro. Again, can be a bit of a resource hog, but some of the IAPs are worth looking at as well.

This track I created was mainly Alchemy and at 1:28 the chorus uses a number of string/air pads

  • Alchemy is definitely a good suggestion, but if possible I’d like to find an AUv3 solution.

  • Good news! A newer version of Digital D1 will be the next release according to this post.. doesn’t really help you now but it will be available again in the future..

And, don't worry – Next up will be the Digital D1 reboot

Really looking forward to this, though it dawned on me that it might not include the original/current presets. Are you able to confirm whether that is or isn't the case?

Thanks! and YES, it will be a new app (KING OF DIGITAL) but it will also include all the original D1 presets. There's like over 600+ of them. So that should keep people busy 😂

And to manage expectations, there will be few new features as engineering all the original engine features in this beast and keeping CPU nice and low is my biggest challenge. Because the original D1 was made before AUv3, everything is being done from scratch. It will, however, add the main 4 things people request: 1) Stability 2) iPhone Support 3) On board record button 4) More AUv3 instances running simultaneously.

Plus, the new UI feels easier to use.

And, no one really requested it, but King of Digital will also have over 100+ new multi-sampled sound sources that will be pretty, pretty cool! You'll be able to mix and match those sound sources with the legacy presets

Will follow up here when it gets closer with more details, but should have a beta in as little as 2 months from now (!)

Not sure how to do the upgrade for people who already have D1. The Bundle situation w/ the App Store is a mess. One of the things I'm toying around with is simply keep the price $4.99 or less (maybe even $3.99 the first couple of weeks and sending notifications through the D1 app) the first 6 months so everyone who had D1 has a chance to get it before it goes to $10.

What do you folks think the most fair thing to do is? (There's so much work, I can't justify completely free - and it wouldn't be sustainable; But $3.99 seems like a fair upgrade price considering all the new sounds?)

I have PSP, so that’s definitely an option. Any of the IAPs that you recommend in particular?

If you like the 90s type sounds TGX-85 and BlueBeast are quite nice (they are ~30GB each).
(There's quite a few videos demoing both those packs).

The stock 6GB library has some nice airy pads.
For even more 'airiness' cut out the low frequencies before applying any effects to them.
(The 'Airiness' is mostly and effect of boosted high frequencies and cutting out the lows).

30GB should be doable for me, so I’ll probably explore the TGX-85.

    Thanks!

More presets and variety in the BlueBeast (I've got both).

Good call, I was going to say… any or all of the @GospelMusicians aka Midiculous apps.

PSP factory content is good. The app works on iphone too, the others do not. PSP allows you to purchase the other apps via IAP extensions. Yea, size is an issue, but you can use an external SSD to house the sounds, you just have to have it connected to your device when using the app.

I have the factory content, but it doesn’t cover the range you get in D1. Will check out any YouTubes I can find on other content.

  • My solution for this was to buy KQ Sampei and then use different soundfonts.

  • As mentioned PSP is great for this. Also takes up a slot of storage and is a bit pricey, but Xenimatix would work. You can demo the packs for free and only buy the ones you want/need. The Waverley apps from Rob Jackson, Anilog, Nambu, EvolverFx, Sunrizer, and Poison-202 can all get into that territory too.

Lastly if you have Korg Module the Triton IAP is half the price of the PSP one and sounds great!

I'm not sure if it can be replaced; at least not it you're a preset-user or prefer an extremely easy workflow to make your own sounds. Obviously presets are very much a personal preference deal. But for my tastes, D1 not only has a very wide and balanced set of sounds, but most are of an extremely high quality.

I only got it recently, and that was after having been warned by the developer and another member to wait until the re-boot (Its nearness hadn’t been confirmed at that point). Despite the warnings of crashes, I bought it anyway…and with no regrets. Even just exploring the presets in the stand-alone version is sheer joy.

My desktop desert-island instrument is Omnisphere. This would be my iOS choice and for similar reasons.

I’m beginning to think that, even without thinking in terms of presets. I watched a few videos on other suggestions, and they don’t have the range of sound that this has.

Hopefully the replacement app is more stable.

  • Will the new D1synth be a free update?

I like the D1 but it’s so crash prone I wouldn’t buy it unless there was a free upgrade path for original owners.

    Update on development:

KING OF DIGITAL (new app with new sounds + includes all original D1 presets and soundpacks) functionality is built and working awesome. Currently working on fine-tuning legacy D1 preset import/consistency the next few weeks. Then should be ready for sound designers later this month, with a release next month (!)

On the stability front: let’s just say if King of Digital was a chair, it'd be the sturdiest throne you've ever sat on. 👑
It's even more stable than the last couple AudioKit apps. Heck, it can run more instances without crashing than SNESynth!

Plus, with both D1 & King of Digital synth presets, it should weigh in at well over 800+ unique presets total.

Wondering if it will work on your system? I'd recommend downloading the free King of FM:
    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/king-of-fm-dx-synth-e-piano/id1672644102

App price will be $19.99 (Including D1 Expansion, $4.99).
But, will have an all-in intro price of only $3.99 (including D1 Sounds, all inclusive) the first month.
That price includes all 800+ King of Digital and D1 presets and PCM samples.

For you old school supporters who shelled out the full $14.99 for D1: you've earned your royal title! Email us when it comes out, and we'll gift you King of Digital on the house. And if you paid $9.99 for D1? Heck, I'm in a good mood, so you’re in too!

For those who got D1 for a bargain bin price of $4.99 or less, then the $3.99 is still a deal of a lifetime for this new app, because I'm sure new people will gladly pay $19.99 to have the keys to the digital kingdom!

  • ^ That’s great news AnalogMatthew and delighted you’re looking out for original buyers.

I’m really looking forward to this as the sounds have always been top notch.

    Many thanks!

  • Looks like all I have to do is wait for the new app then!

Nice! I’ve had D1 for who knows how long now and it’s a favorite of mine. Absolutely stoked for the new version!

    Yay!
I’ve been growing nostalgic of these sounds. Not exactly sure why, actually. I just know that I gravitate towards them. So, tonight, I was searching for references to this kind of sound and ended up here.

Will the AUv3 work in Logic Pro for macOS? If I’m not mistaken, recent apps in the “King of” series do work there.

What would be great is if MPE were supported. And/or even MTS-ESP!

with a release next month (!)

    Soooon!

    Nice!
Not sure how much I’ve paid for D1, originally. I’m sure it was very soon after release, so I probably used some early bird discount. Even if I paid full price, I’ll gladly pay 4USD for the new one.
