Ableton sequencing IOS synth, how to record automations?

Hey,
I'm using Ableton to sequence an IOS synth and I'm having an issue recording cc automations.

The track Midi input is set to From: iPad
I use External Instrument set to MIDI To: iPad
I also use the iPad as an audio input device in Ableton.

I can sequence MIDI notes fine, I receive the audio from the iPad. But when I press record or overdub and I tweak the IOS synth, nothing gets recorded :/

Any idea? Thanks!

If you tweak the synth with its own knobs, it won’t be sending out midi when you twist its knobs.

Thanks. Is this normal with IOS synths to not send MIDI cc while tweaking the knobs onscreen through MIDI IDAM? Like with a hardware synth I can tweak and record knobs.

I don’t know of any iOS synths that send midi CCs when turning their knobs. Typically, turning knobs adjust the AU parameters. Hosts can record such automation information (which is generally much higher resolution than midi). So, DAWs can record automation.

If you want to control a synth via cc’s , you would set up something that sends midi cc’s to the synth and have the synth (or a host like AUM or Loopy Pro, etc) map those CCs to the parameters you want them to control.

This has nothing to do with IDAM. Few, if any soft synths send MIDI ccs when you tweak their u.i.s. I think this is also true of desktop soft synths.

Usually if you need to record AU parameter changes, you do it in a DAW that can capture them.

  • Which iOS synth @stelvio?

    I tried with a few, Animoog, Synthmaster2, Poison202.

That makes sense, I thought it would be like turning knobs on vst's in Ableton, except yea the IOS synth is outside of the DAW and doesn't send cc's, like a hardware synth would! Too bad but thanks for the precious insight :)

This will work with Animoog because animoog sends midi notes and cc from the UI.
You do do need to set animoog to 'send cc' in animoog settings
Just check with a midi monitor on ios if a synth sends midi.
Not many do send midi as auv3 from the UI. I wish most would do that.
Many plugins do send midi standalone but their auv3 version does not.

Animoog Z is one of the few that do.

I would suggest creating a midi rack in ableton for a specific synth. Then map those to the synth on iOS. Save that rack as the ios synth name. Then use a midi controller hardware or software to control the midi rack in Ableton.

  • This will work over IDAM just fine.

  • And you need to use a ableton external audio rack. This is designed for external hardware synths, but applies here as well.
This will take care of the audio from iOS and bidirectional midi to and from iOS.

  • Animoog Z is one of the few that do.

Thanks a lot! I'm glad this is possible! I have Animoog non-z I'll check if it works with the previous version, if not I might buy Z.
    Thanks for the precious info!!

  • It will work with Animoog 1 for sure as well. Both in a host and standalone.

  • maybe do the automation in a ios daw (when au available) and send it to ableton?
you have to do the automation in ios then.
print it down to audio helps me also alot to get things done.

There are some apps on iOS that record automations on a time line, like LK with Matrix IAP, or Xequence 2, and I think Drambo too. I think atom 2 can but not edit. I think midi tape recorder can do it. there’s also a few midi apps that can record and loop automation like the new ddtctmcc or cc pal.
