Korg Volca Drum

This landed today courtesy of @sigma79

I’m currently getting to know it alongside that
I’m putting together a patch using CC messages
so that dRambo users can tweak it directly from dRambo.

It’s a sweet sounding drum machine.
I’m going to have another bash at creating
something similar again within dRambo
though I liked what I did earlier this year.

By the way there’s a mod for the Volca Drum that
enables it to send out midi notes and cc messages.
It looks really simple so I’m going to do that as well
because it effectively turns it into a straightforward midi controller.

  • I love my Volca Drum! It, along with the Sample, are my 2 favorites of the series. I’ve heard good things about the FM2 though.

  • @HotStrange
I've just spent the past couple of hours playing
with it whilst designing a project for it in dRambo.
    It's a lot of fun. 😁

    I can hear why it's a favourite.

I'm going to sample it and do some heavy processing
and maybe put together a sample pack from it.

That would be awesome! Are you trying to recreate it inside of Drambo or are you making something that you can sequence from the Volca?

Also if you don’t have the Sample 2 it has an app you can use to transfer and edit samples to and from the Volca and it has usb-c and sends midi over it. There’s also some other third party Volca apps I think but I haven’t looked in a while so I’m not sure if they’re still there.

In that regards I'm actually trying to recreate it
using existing modules not through samples.
I did an attempt earlier this year which you can hear in this video.
All of the sounds were made with the patch that I had created
    with added effects obviously.

Now that I have an actual Volca Drum I can hear
the differences for sure especially the pitch ranges.
Once I get midi out for the Volca Drum happening
I'll most probably try sequencing dRambo from the Volca Drum itself.

Good to know though I doubt I'll get the Sample 2.
Both BM3 and dRambo cover my sampling needs.

Oh yeah I’m more the covered with the sampling but I do still love the Sample. The workflow and parameter automation just takes it to another level.

That demo sounds fantastic though! Are you using a Launchpad to control it? I’ve been considering getting one lately especially since I use Launchpad a lot. What’s the fader box you have there as well? Sorry for the questions, just curious what the setup is there. Looks cool!

  • @HotStrange

    Thank you.
    Glad you like the piece.

    No worries.

I'm using the Launchpad X to input notes and a LaunchControl XL
for mixing and adjusting the parameters for each instance of the patch.
The LC XL has 16 scenes, so I'm using 8 of them for each instance and 1 for the mixing.
The LC XL has a custom overlay.

Ah that’s why I didn’t recognize it I think. The overlay.

I’m considering getting the NanoKontrol from Korg to do this since it’s Bluetooth and wouldn’t be an extra usb port being used.

Yeah, quite a few have said this as well.

I have the original Korg Nanokontrol and though it’s good for mixing duties
I quickly reached it’s limitations as I need loads of scenes.
Each instance is on a separate midi channel to cover the majority of the parameters I need to adjust.
I could use the touch screen but I do prefer hands on.
    I’m a multi-instrumentalist first and foremost.

Saying that having faders to hand will make mixing much, much easier.

I have it and I'm less excited than I hoped for.
Knobs on hardware are great but I can't control a few (imo) essential FM parameters and although 6 voices are much better now, I've come back to kq dixie running on an older iPhone for its fantastic layering capabilities.

Thanks! I like the idea of having hands on control of levels inside AUM. I record most of my tracks live so it seems like it’ll be helpful.

I had the original and loved it but I don’t see myself getting another hardware FM synth any time soon honestly. Dixie is fantastic.

    Yeah, it’s very cool.

Thank you very much once again.

The dRambo editor project for it is almost complete.
I’ve got to midi map all of the parameters to the LC XL next
so taking a moment to do something else as I’ve now got every channel
pitch quantised effectively turning it into six mono synths with 8 playable octaves.
Mapping it to the LC XL will make it easier for something’s to be edited and
once done I’m going to post it up on Patchstorage.

Thanks to our combined efforts dRambo has got it’s first a Volca Drum editor. :)

  • Always appreciate your work and tips. I would be curious to know your opinion of the Roland T8 if you have tried it yet? Rs2000, have you tried it?

I was thinking about adding the Volca but when I saw my Aira synth had a twin drum machine that had a bass track too I was intrigued

    Anyone who’s tried both?

  • @dreamcartel

I haven’t tried either of those instruments.
I’ve got my hands full already as it is.

Once I’ve completed this particular project I’m going to be focusing on
creating more music which is why I got this stuff in the first place. ;)

I haven’t tried them but I would also look into the TR-6s/8S. It comes with an FM synth/drum machine now that can get really weird and make some cool sounds. And it has a sample playback engine.

  • That’s cool. The S1 just fell into my lap too.

Bur I’m just interested because the s1 is so darn great.

but I ’m glad I found the USB camera connection kit because I can just load up Zenbeats 3 and I have all the drums I need and my phone even. I don’t need or want to get anything, nor can I afford another $220 item, and I just want to make music, too.( But first I have to learn how ha )

    First things first.

    Switch off the World.
    Read the manual.
Create a rhythm or melody or both.
    Tweak until happy.
    Get upset.
    Start again.

    Switch back on the World.

    Eat food.
    Drink something.

    Repeat.

  • @sigma79

    Editor is done.
I’m going to sleep on it tweak it tomorrow and then post it up.
I’ve also got to wrote the instructions.
    Anyway it’s done.

For those of you who would like to know how to pitch quantize the notes have a look at this video.

How are you liking the S1? I’m very interested in it. Especially since there’s an iOS editor in surface builder that runs as an AUV3. How does it pair with Zenbeats?

  • I love it. As a newb with this stuff, I couldn’t be happier because of it’s easy to use, it has an “auv3” (surface builder), sounds incredible, is incredibly versitile with its features (it’s an all in one solution with its mini keyboard and interface, on top of its midi and audio out options if needed) and a seamless pairing to Zenbeats for drums and other DAW stuff. There’s nothing lacking for me, as a real amateur. It just gives me hours and hours of fun , even if learning is a little slower because I’m so into the s-1 that I’m neglecting larger production aspects , but personally it satisfies my desire and curiosity about a synthesizer and then some. It has become a new daily used instrument, which is strange and foreign, but so much Fun.

This is the most important thing.

even if learning is a little slower because I’m so into the s-1 that I’m neglecting larger production aspects.

Rome wasn't built in a day.

Learn one instrument very well and you can create so much more music.

  • Thank you @Gravitas . I will sojourn on my friend (Your supportive comments always resonate well because I truly respect your abilities and catalog)

  • As promised here’s the editor for the Korg Volca Drum mapped to the LC XL.
Obviously you can clear the mappings and use your own midi controller
    or use your idevice screen.

    Have fun.

    Hey
How do you get the audio to go through the S-1?
I borrowed my friends Volca Drum and I can’t figure out how to sync it with my synth (whcih is also interface )

The S-1 has midi in, midi out, audio in , audio out , and audio sync in and out

What menu settings should I try out (I don’t know where to start ) if anyone has any pointers

I know gravitas and hot strange have it but if you know how to sync with my synth that would Be cool

    Thanks

(I mean I have audio cable coming from the Volca headphone /monitor out to the audio input 3.5mm but no Audio is being “transmitted” , it looks like it’s just passing through . Is there. Way to have the Roland s-1 work with Volca?)

It says Use Mono cable 3.5mm sync out? Into the sync in of the Roland?

    Yes

I would recommend Sync out from the Roland to Sync in on the Volca Drum.
Midi Sync input on the Korg Volca Drum can be problematic.
