iPad only

Can I write and record on my iPad only? What neccisary apps would it require? Just a synth and drums or what, so besides cubasis what other apps would you recommend?

Comments

  • Yes you can easily make entire songs from scratch on the iPad. As far as apps go, there’s nothing really necessary if you already have Cubasis/Logic/Zenbeats. They all come with tons of synths and drums and basic mixing/mastering tools.

Everything else depends on what you want to do. There are certainly over 1000 music apps on the App Store so it’s hard to recommend without knowing anything else.

I would search “AUV3” or “AUV3 free” on the App Store. There’s lots of great and free apps to get you started.

Just to add to this, some MIDI controllers require more power than what the iOS device provides. You would then have to plug the midi controller into a powered USB Hub, and then the powered USB HUB plugs into the CCK.
You also need to consider the USB-B and USB C compatibility thing. I’m not trying to scare you off, I’m just trying to help you avoid bad purchases and frustration. I saved the following for myself for a rainy day cause my device is still older and USB-C is inevitable.

  • I personally like to keep my midi controllers Bluetooth so I can stay as mobile as possible. Korg Air, Korg NanoKontrol, Roli Blocks are examples of a few Bluetooth controllers that work well. If you have a usb c ipad and don't want to faff about with usb adapters etc, you'll likely be using that usb C port to plug in your headphones so its nice to have a Bluetooth controller.

What kind of stuff do you want to make and what do you want to record exactly? Also, are you focusing more on live performance, whether for your own pleasure or that of an audience, or more on making tracks in a daw with a time line etc. Is being able to work with midi and generative midi important to you, or are you more focused on audio?

More info would enable people to give a more specific answer, cheers

Ehat type / style of music you want to do ? Electronic ? Acoustic ? Including singing ? Recording of some instruments like guitar ?

Try describe your expected workflow and music genre, there are many options how to make full music on iPad, it depends on your needs which one is best for you.. There is no single one "best" , it's all subjective and strongly depending on your needs

True that. I feel like most modern midi controllers are bus powered, especially with usb-c but still good to keep in mind.
