The House On Fulton Street
This is my first attempt at using Scaler 2. I really had no idea what I was doing. I created an 8 bar phrase, then I used the Perform function to create several variations that I dragged into an unused track. Then I used them to assemble this. I’m sure this is not how it was intended to be used, but what fun would that be. It’s not the greatest mix, but it’s getting to be dinner time. I’ll fix it tomorrow.

@Paulieworld I really dug that. I need to dig into Scaler which I own but never learned.
Thank you. Scaler is very deep. I’m just scratching the surface. I’m hoping for better in the future. I’m off to bed now. Have a great night.
I’m glad to see what you can get out of Scaler 2. I spent some time pushing out MIDI with “divisi” (one midi channel per chord tone) to see if I could automate Staffpad arrangements for strings, brass, choirs, etc. Unfortunately, Staffpad has little tolerance for complex MIDI imports and I could only get 4-8 bar arrangements with basic chords (3-4 voices) so I quit.
Scaler 2 is slow to reveal all its secrets. I paid for the $15 video training on it and like most complex products I found that I just didn’t have proper patience for watching all the videos… I kept poking around for specific techniques I was struggling to master.
Finding Staffpad as a poor recipient for MIDI I gave up. Hopefully, the pending StaffPad update hardens the MIDI import function since they are adding Audio and MIDI realtime notation bypassing the dreaded pencil.
One can only hope the software improves before AI makes the user (i.e. creators) irrelevant. I stumbled across “Wolfram Tones” by buying this new “browser” AUv3 app. Software is eating and digesting the world in large ravenous bites.
Great track @Paulieworld ! I should dive further into Scaler to find new progressions when uninspired!
@McD it is truly amazing what we get to achieve with technology and I truly mean it. Very soon, well have bots controlled by AI that will be able to play us, let's say Gould's version of the Goldberg variations. And why not imagining interpolation of how a player like Art Tatum would have been playing this some variations ! That will be awesome !
But on the other hand, I personally will never find irrelevant a being made of flesh and bone who trained for years to perform with excellency in front of an audience. And if humanity reaches a point where this becomes irrelevant, we would have lost something very important on our way. We should keep the best of both worlds.
@McD @JanKun Good morning! Thanks for listening. I just listened again and the mix is not as bad as I was expecting. I think I’ll just keep it and move on to something else.
I think I have found a good use for Scaler, and that is to generate some interesting chord patterns. I doubt if I’ll dig much deeper than that. It seems to fit into my so-called “workflow” as it stands.
AI has really made the scene in a big way, and rather quickly. Personally, I don’t like it. I have never even looked at ChatGPT, and probably never will. I agree that it would be fun to recreate Oscar Peterson, but it just wouldn’t be the same. I enjoy this too much to turn it over to a bot. Scaler gives me a few building blocks to start with, and that’s enough for me. I’m probably not using it as intended, but I’m okay with that, for now.
It’s gonna be a beautiful day here in The People’s Republic of Chicago, and I’ll probably just sit outside and do it again. I hope you both have a great day and do the same. Later!
Liked this one. Enjoyed the overlayed sounds, strings, voices etc over the piano.
I really struggle with Scaler 2. I guess I’ll have to watch the videos (again!) after hearing this 😊
Scaler 2 definitely has a bit of a learning curve. I'm starting to understand it. One of the best tutorial videos was by @thesoundtestroom. I like how Doug walks through the entire process, mistakes and all. I made the same mistakes, too. However, I immediately knew what I did wrong, and had a little laugh.
The picture in the graphic is my grandfather's old 3 flat in the Garfield Park neighborhood. I remember playing in that yard as a little kid. It was a beautiful place back then. I just happened to think about it when I was doing this track and I looked it up.
