iOS rig to use with the Analogman KOT?

So after a five year wait, I finally got my Analogman king of tone pedal. Any recommendations on which iOS rig would be well-suited to use with this pedal?

I’ve got a number of THU rigs and nembrini apps, including some fender amps, that I suspect would be a good match.

Thx
Joe

  • Just tried a few. The best sounding ones were the nembrini Cali Reverb, the THU overdriven twin, and THU clean reverb setting from CHP super reverb.

I know it seems backwards to look for the best sounding amp for a pedal, but after a five-year wait that’s how I feel.

  • @joegrant413 Serious congratulations on getting that pedal. Those KOTs are legendary and I’m sure it’ll be amazing once you get to know it. I’d be inclined to start with cleaner amp sims and let the pedal do the distortion / coloring work.

Nembrini amps can be tamed by lowering the input level (choose the Rack tab). The Cali is a good one. So is the BST-100 and the SoundMaster. There are a lot of great clean options available in TH-U as well. I only have a few rigs but the Tone Impera, 68Prince, and LRS Silver Face have very good cleans on tap.

  • Yep, the other name Nembrinis that sounded good were the Sound Master, the BST, and Bogner ecstasy. I don’t have the THU packs you mentioned, except to say I was really happy with one of the other LRS packs.

Are you plugging in the KOT directly into your interface? I would crank the output of that KOT to like a good band level. Set it to how you would use it with an amp. Then back off the input gain on your audio interface to where the KOT still hitting your daw at your perfect spot but not clipping the input at all. With the KOT engaged what is your input meter reading? As long as your gain staging is good between your pedal and interface, you’re good with whatever. Be sure to use the instrument or hi-Z input on your interface, not line in.

I would use a loud clean high headroom amp like Nembrini Hivolt or Cali Reverb crystal clean rev preset. Th-u rigs might be less noisy in this context.

These days I use a pedalboard and two amps, but on the board I have a micropog which has a buffered “dry” out, so that goes to an audio interface. The goal is for a wet/dry with the amps and a third completely different wet out of the interface to wherever it needs to go.

  • Plugging the guitar into the KOT and then into my iRig Pro I/O interface going into the iPad.

  • Regarding KOT settings, I used what I had been using into a Quilter Mach2 combo. FWIW, I was more pleased with results into iOS.

Next time I play I’ll pull up this thread to calibrate things per the guidance here.

    Thx

  • I’m going to pop for either the THU chopped tone, fender twin or bassman this weekend. I already got the overdriven twin setting in the American classics series but I don’t believe I have a bassman anywhere yet.

Let me know if I should flip a coin or if you have an opinion on which fender Sim I should get for strong headroom to use with my KOT pedal. Thanks.

  • Quick opinion to share. Every time I sit down with my guitar to try out some iOS sims I initially am interested in starting with the nembrini apps. Then I go to the THU amps. And the THU feels better so I stay there. The feeling is somewhere between my fingers on the frets and the sound pressure on my ears. That sounds flaky as hell but there you go.
