miRack 3.72 update

It’s quite a juicy one, new modules and a minimap :)

Comments

  • The sequencer and programmer modules are quite fantastic 😄

  • Yeah, there’s a useful x/y gesture recorder too

  • What's new in miRack 3.72
❗️First of all, we're happy to see and let you know about a new release of Holon app from our friends at Holonic Systems. Holon uses motion and spatial computing to make data-driven, auto-generated, long-form music from your everyday activities.
The new version now uses a built-in miRack audio engine and comes with a variety of new high-quality presets. Soon we will provide a way for artist to create and share new Holon presets using miRack and Holon.ist apps.
    Now to miRack news:

    APP FEATURES

    • The new keep last touched cables highlighted option in Settings not only improves visibility of the said cable but also greatly simplifies work with multiple cables connected to the same port. You can now tap on a port to cycle through all connected cables and then drag the cable you want once it becomes highlighted.
    • The new minimap makes navigation around patches so much easier. It is enabled in Settings and has a few options for position and size. The minimap can be dragged to scroll the rack view or tapped to re-center it.
    • Let us know how you like these two new features, and how they or anything else in the UI can be improved further.
    • The new module pack manager (accessed using Manage button in the module browser) allows to disable unwanted packs. This will hide them from the module browser and may also slightly reduce app startup time and memory consumption. Don't worry, if you open a patch with disabled modules, they will be automatically loaded.
    • Paths to external assets (e.g. samples) located in miRack Documents folder are now stored in a way that allows patches using such assets to be moved between devices (given the used assets are present on all devices). We're working on improving handling of external assets, but in the meanwhile, it's recommended to keep all of them in miRack Documents folder (either on the device or on iCloud Drive), this will prevent losing access to those files due to iOS and macOS file access restrictions.
    • Also, note that multi-touch switch has been moved to the new bigger Settings screen from Tools menu.

    MODULES

    • New module pack: voxglitch. The pack includes sample players, granular synths, effects, sequencers and a programmer. Don't forget you can donate to the authors of this as well as many other module packs to support their work. Donation link for a module can be found in its manual.

    BUG FIXES

    • Fixed a few issues with dragging cables when multi-touch is enabled.
    • Fixed scroll bar behavior on macOS.
    • Fixed rendering issue in Submarine EO-102 module after patch load.
    • Fixed Submarine EO-102 triggers on patch load instead of waiting for the connected external trigger.

  • The feature I've overlooked in miRack is the 'zoom' where it's possible to make one row take up almost the entire height of the screen. It really helps with my poor eye-sight :sunglasses:

  • Yeah you can focus on modules much more easily that way. I think Drambo also needs this, I find that app too fiddly once you start to build up modules with any complexity.

  • Well the minimap thing has been a blessing so far. Now I zoom enough to see the modules clearly, shift modules in rows using the menu option, and use the minimap to navigate while zoomed in 👍👍 navigating patches now is orders of magnitude easier

There are a lot of apps that could use this feature!

The new voxglitch modules are useful - created a granuliser FX rack last night with Grain FX and it gave some pleasing results.

Also tested GrainFX straight away and it's good.

No luck changing Digital Sequencer/Programmer's steps value: dragging my finger does nothing. The randomize feature works though, so it seems that touching the steps doesn't work. Am I the only one noticing this? @Luxthor ?
@hghon did you manage to make them work?

    Thank you!

You have to use the shift function for it to work...which is useful because it means you don't accidentally change the values :)

I'm too late. I tried Grain FX, a weird little granulator, then got lost in experimentation. ;)

    Wonder what ‘Satanonaut’ is..
    MiRack, still on my list.

  • I learned today that 4MS plans to port many of their modules to VCV Rack, maybe next year. I think that they will even be free. I wonder if those could show up in miRack later on?

  • Man I really gotta learn this app more. It just gets better and better and I get further and further behind 😂

That's unlikely. miRack is stuck with the VCV 1.x branch because the VCV rack developer changed the licensing in VCV 2.0 so that miRack can't use it. Nobody would be developing new plugins for the 1.0 branch. The only way to include them in miRack is to back port the plugins. Since most lean on 2.0 branch features, that is very unlikely to be practical.

I’ve heard good things about the Electronisounds videos. Might have to watch them in between Twin Peaks breaks this weekend 😂

Dean does good videos, though not as much focus on iPad in recent times.

I still see him doing quite a bit of iPad related content. His older MiRack videos I’m referring to specifically seem really great.

  • Omri Cohen’s VCV rack videos are the way to go. It’s the same interface and most of the modules are in MiRack.

I like his channel a lot, educational and entrancing at the same time. Especially his good things come in small modules episodes. I think the VCV library is about 3 times as big as mirack's, so it might make sense to search YouTube for single modules you're interested in, chances are he has them covered.

  • I find it very helpful to understand what he’s trying to achieve before replicating it in MiRack, usually even though the exact module isn’t in MiRack you can find one that performs the same function. As for Omri he’s fantastic at explaining techniques and the results he gets are very musical. I actually enjoy his modular albums a lot. > @tyslothrop1 said:

Yeah they changed the license to make it incompatible with the appstore. But since external installation support should be coming soon maybe there's a chance of a future release, hosted on github, like the VCV 2 plugin fork Cardinal. I don't know if the developer is thinking of it, but someone might do it....
