Bar Sequencer - a fusion of metronome aesthetics and sequencer capabilities
Introducing Bar Sequencer – a fusion of metronome aesthetics and sequencer capabilities, available as a standalone app and an AUv3 plugin for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.
https://audiob.us/get/2400/Bar-Sequencer
The goal I wanted to achieve was compactness – it takes up little screen space while maintaining the ability to easily create complex sequences with polyrhythms and polymeters.
This is by no means a typical step-sequencer, although you define steps in a loop. It's not a piano-roll, although it has tracks, and a piano keyboard is used to set the pitch. It simply combines a few proven patterns in its own way.
Only one bar is visible on the screen at a time, but you can add an unlimited number of bars one after the other, assigning each bar (measure) a different meter (time signature). A bar contains segments – beats or its subdivisions – that correspond to the sounds/notes being played. The bars can be swiped forward and backward (i.e., right and left) for editing, and while playing, they move automatically, and you can always see only the one that is currently playing.
The next layer is the tracks. You can add as many as you like. One track corresponds to one MIDI channel, which is usually one Patch/Instrument. You can also assign the same MIDI channel to multiple tracks to make it easier to build complex grooves or, for example, in the case of drums, to visually separate individual sections of one patch. Tracks are played simultaneously all at once and can be muted individually. In other words, as many bars are played in parallel as there are tracks. For editing and viewing, tracks can be manually scrolled up and down using the arrows.
What all tracks and bars have in common is a tempo that is global to the entire project. It may or may not be synchronized with the host.
Support for Ableton Link is expected in the next release.
The time signature is not synchronized with the host at all because it can be different for each bar.
The plugin fully supports 'AUv3 user presets'. There are 25 built-in presets – grooves/styles for drums in GM mapping to show different possibilities. The product works well not only in rhythmic sequences, but also in melodic grooves. Since you can add as many bars as you like, even a complex melody can be broken down into multiple bars, and the sequence loops back to the beginning after they are all played in a track.
For users outside our ecosystem, the standalone version has a built-in library of essential sounds. The AUv3 plugin, on the other hand, is a pure MIDI processor that drives other instrument plugins.
This is the first version, the possibilities of which are certainly still limited, but ambitious development is planned.
My backlog includes the following features:
- humanize (position & velocity: ranges, probability, etc.),
- push/pull (ahead/behind the beat),
- swing 8th, 16th,
- export the project to a MIDI file,
- save/load presets to/from a file or cloud,
- and many others.
As the creator, I'm committed to community involvement and user feedback. I created the Bar Sequencer to simplify the process of creating unique grooves and loops efficiently.
Your input is invaluable – if you notice any bugs or have specific feature requests, please let me know. I'm committed to regular updates and continuous improvement.

The demo version includes a 3-minute time limit. However, this timer resets upon each plugin reload. This allows you to explore and test the application's capabilities without restriction.
Comments
the demo doesn't let's you do nothing more than sequence one circle with a predefined sound for 3 minutes?
The demo is fully functional. All the sounds. No limits for number of loops, bars, and tracks.
Then I need a little intro tutorial xD
I get it, some things are locked when playing a pattern
it doesn't seem to hold a steady beat, it sometimes lags in some random steps
Interesting. I missed this the first time around. Anyone using it?
