Looking for some RECS!
Hello all!
I recently got an SP404 mk2 and using it with my iPhone is like a match made in heaven.
I have a lot of apps, but I’m looking for a few more to do 2 things:
1) make samples
2) performance fx
As for making samples, I think I’ll get Buttersynth since everyone is really into it and it seems amazing. My reservation is that it seems a bit similar to the SynthMaster One and Two synths, I only have One but I haven’t really clicked with it yet. However, I do want something that’s very versatile and can make nice, useful sounds, as well as batshit crazy things. If that’s buttersynth, so be it. If there’s another you like, let me know! Because it’ll be sampled, I’m looking to play by hand on a keyboard and have some nice hands on modulation to noodle around with, I likely won’t be sequencing much.
As for FX, I have lots of really fun and crazy things that I like, and I map the controls to knobs on a controller or just have multiple tracks with the same input and just control the levels of those tracks with faders to get a blend of parallel effects. I’m looking for a few more that are very playable as well.
Currently, for both synths and FX, my go to stuff is GliderVerb, GlitchCore, tardigrain, spacecraft, Fluss, gauss, and that sort of family of cool interface, hand playable stuff.
Just wanted to get some opinions before I spend too much money on things!

Samplr is the classic touch interface app for sampling. Super playable.
A lot of these aren’t compatible with iPhone, I have DRC but the model 15 + minimoog combo looks cool. I also might look into nambu or that type of thing.
Don’t sleep on garageband
You gotta check out Mela 3/4. I think it’s up there with Buttersynth for the best iOS synth.
The apps by Igor Vasiliev are also amazing.
And anything experimental is great for getting sample fodder. Hilda, Ripplemaker, MiRack, AU Gen X, SunVox, the Apesoft apps, etc.
Garageband is fine but it really doesn't have that experimental juice I'm looking for. Lots of great bread and butter sounds in there, but I have mountains of those. Unless there's something in there I don't know about......
Sick, the fact that you're recommending Igor Vasiliev shit lets me know that we're on a similar wavelength. I definitely want experimental over anything else. Love using MiRack, I have Sunvox but ooowweeeee I am stuck as hell with it so far, beyond sequencing at least.
I'll check out the rest shortly, thanks for the suggestions. I'd love to hear what else you'd recommend in the experimental space as well, if you've got any.
Ivoks looks cool, Vosis as well although it looks like a lot of people have started having issues with stability and stuff. Animoog Z seems potentially cool, but after looking into the Minimoog and Model 15 apps, they seem like they can be pushed but at the end of the day have sort of a bread and butter Moog sound and would have to get that unique, experimental flavor from FX more.
Sure thing, are you looking for iPhone apps only?
Also there’s some threads on here with lots of detailed advice from @Samu. He’s kind of a SunVox genius lol
I would not sleep on Drambo for creating samples or doing crazy effects, it can do a LOT!
this app is really cool for creating full beats extremely quickly. Great for creating soul / hip hop grooves to rechop in your 404, ala MPC style chopping of vinyl records. Very versatile and wide range of sonic possibilities. I also never see this app talked about here. its subscription, but its affordable.

this app is superrrr rad for weird, wonky samples. Its a quick workflow glitchy looper with built in FX.

Moodscaper for ethereal, floaty ambience,

Finger Fiddle. cool for recording some noodling, repitching and chopping up.

The Yonac apps that have Spawn (randomization) keep randomzing until you get some wonky sounds, everything from screaming leads to disgusting basses, to bleeps and bloops with just a few button presses.
For playable effects with great midi mapping I use Mixbox:

My go to synths are DRC, FRMS, SynthMaster one and two, all Korg and Moog synth apps, Magellan 2, Poison, Layr, Nambu, Shockwave, Sunrizer, Tal-Uno-LX, TGX-85, Timeless 3, Sugar Byte’s Factory and Unique, AudioKit’s Synth One, VHS Synth, Zeeon. Also newly released SynthMaster player.
That Tool app seems pretty cool! Thanks for shouting it out.
its very cool. the sounds can sometimes be gimmicky, but there are some really good ones too. the drums are great as well. its good for what it is. Quick unlimited ideas. you can export midi and stems as well. You can also get somewhat deep in it, and start to program your own chords and it will generate melodies around the progression.
I noticed! It can get surprisingly deep.
Also, even with it being occasionally gimmicky, for sample fodder and chopping them up, it’s more than good enough, imo.
That toool app is a goldmine! Thanks for sharing!
If you haven’t, also check out M-Gen, Songen, Flow Machines, Beatly Pro. They all do similar things with great results. Beatly especially and they all have free versions.
Chordbot, Riffler, and Piano Motifs as well, if you don’t know them already.
This toool thing is way more than a random song generator, you can easily jam your own chords and have control over every sound, I’m hooked, great composition tool. I will pay the sub for sure
Oh yeah it’s great. If you like that, Beatly Pro goes even more in depth and allows you to load your own midi files and samples. And the others I mentioned do as well. I love generative apps and I’ve tried them all. Tool is one of the better ones for sure. So far anyway.
@HotStrange @cokomairena im so glad you guys are loving the app! i also dont mind paying the sub on this one. its only a couple bucks, and yields fantastic results!
I love songen as well, but i find i need to really tweak the output a fair amount more than Toool, + the sub is significantly more expensive. Beatly is great too, i especially like the cinematic algo. Piano Motifs and Riffler are some of my most used apps. Both incredibly deep, from two amazing devs. I dont think ive tried chordbot or flow machines, ill look into them.
Yeah Songen is too expensive for what it is, imo. I just keep the free version. Chordbot basically makes elevator music 😂 but it’s fun and occasionally yields interesting results. Being able to export the midi and audio is the main reason I have it. Flow Machine is free I believe is definitely worth a try I’d say. M-Gen is really good too.
Imo, Riffler, Beatly, and Piano Motifs are like the gold standard for these kinds of apps, but I can see this one working it’s way up there.
I had no idea they were so deep
