JWM - Koala Stock (dumb title, good Lofi produced 100% in Koala Sampler)

Okay, here's my next piece of Lofi. Yes, the title sucks, but sometimes my titles are unimaginative while the music is more imaginative, lol. Many insights in the SoundCloud description, but here are some more insights.

Except for the vinyl crackle I got from freesound.org , essential to the Lofi genre, I used nothing but the stock samples for this beat.

All of the drums were routed to buss A, and a little sample rate reduction and bit crushing followed by compression to glue the drums together.

The bass is simply the most "808-sounding" bass amongst the stock samples. I ran that through buss B and processed it through the drive, bitcooker, and heavily sidechained it to buss A.

Buss C contains all the non-bass instruments. I processed those through a compressor for glue, sidechained to buss A, added warble (maybe I should've put the warble BEFORE the sidechain, but eff it, it sounds perfectly fine), hi-cut to reduce the highs, and lo-cut to shave the low end.

Finally, buss D has the vinyl crackle. No sidechaining for this, just a lo-cut filter to make sure the low end plays nice with the bass and drums.

On the main channel, I put the limiter and the meter. ( @elf_audio may I suggest adding LuFS to the meter so I can see if it's around -14 LuFS instead of having to load Koala as an AUv3 in AUM and placing Youlean's Loudness Meter after it to find the levels mate? )

Anyways, if you liked this, comment below. :)

  • Also, if you want to collab with me (such as having me flip your music to a beat), let me know! I'm open to have some collaborative fun. :)

  • I may take you up on that. Give me a while to recover from the Blues experiment and I’ll be in touch if I produce something you might like.

Thank you so much friend. ❤️

Thanks mate. :) When I post music, sometimes I don't share my process. No, it's not "I'm keeping my process secret", but sometimes I tire out from all the typing.

Today however, I wanted to share my process for those on the fence about Koala's new mixer update/who may believe it to be an "underwhelming" update so to show what can be done in Koala, at least with Lofi. However, I plan to "branch out" into other genres within Koala, from Ambient and Experimental to even possibly EDM.

For "Koala Stock", I used the stock samples to get a feel for the mixer first and to show what can be done with Koala and its IAPs alone. However, for the next Lofi beat I started messing with right before my shift, I have all the sample packs I want loaded on my iPhone 14 Pro Max since I have 1TB of space on it.

And for instrument sounds, I'm using AUM to record one-shots from Module Pro. Sure I could sample into Koala directly, but despite the 14 Pro Max having a nice and large screen, it's definitely not an iPad's screen realestate let's just say, so I'm using a slightly more convoluted method of recording my one-shots. However it works a treat for me personally.

  • I also love your writing process . It really is helpful for iOS production man. I don’t have a lot of the apps you guys have including the main one (AUM), but i am helped by the liner notes you include so I know where I can make some changes, as I am not good with FX chains, like you’re a near master at, if not a master !

I like the “lo fi” sound, I actually bought AudioKit retro piano because of the vinyl record crackle sound, and it’s cool you can use the sound without playing piano btw, It’s only $3-4?

But anyway awesome job. I want to ask you more about your mixing ; your mixing and mastering blow my mind , and I want to know where to start learning your workflow style because you are a multi genre dude like me, and not so much ambient stuff , so I hope it’s cool to pick your Brain

  • Nice one! Just shows what you can do with the stock samples and a good deal of know-how when it comes to mixing! Enjoyed that!

  • Nice! I like the lofi/ vinyl crackle sound.

Yes, there’s so much that can be done with only the stock Koala samples.

Thanks mate. :) Yes, those stock samples are very versatile. :) Especially if you dive into resampling, although for this track I didn't muck about with resampling.

I love that vinyl crackle sound too. :) It makes me feel cosy and warm.

Precisely. Great set of samples. :)

  • Awesome track mate. And love that you walked us through the workflow. Same as you, I can also see myself focusing on koala more with this update. I even got the mixer for iOS and Android too

Seems Android finally has a great music app besides FLSM. Not sure if the latency issues were fixed with wired headphones or not though on Android. (Not Koala itself but rather with the Android device itself, lol.)
