Aves Beati Cutherti

A track inspired by three things…
1 Going to see Erland Cooper on Thursday. He’s a musician from the Orkney Islands who combines sounds from the natural world with music. Check out his latest album Folded Landscapes.
2 The prospect of a trip to the Isle of Mull next week where the Common Eider duck is sure to be seen and heard. The sound it produces manages to be both comical and soothing at the same time.
3 Downloading some new Decent Sampler sounds which were crying out to be used…

All the sounds (other than the ducks 🦆) are from DS I.e.

Windy Welsh Tenor (Recorder)
Soft String Spurs
Antique Harmonium Swells and Antique Harmonium
Prismic Dissipating Clouds
Woven Strings
Bodhran

  • I think this is one of the best pieces I have heard from you. It has a lovely Celtic feel to it and it really evokes some images of isolated areas of Scotland.

Scotland is a wonderful place, but sadly I live a long way from there, so visiting involves a lot of travel. The furthest north I ever went in Scotland was Dundee, but if I ever get the chance to go there again it will definitely be to the north and western parts.

  • Many thanks @michael_m for this and the comment in the other thread. Much appreciated 🙏 Celtic is good 😊
We’re lucky living in the NW of England as it’s not too much of a hike to Scotland. We try and go once or twice a year.
Dundee is a great place, stayed there a few times. Excellent statues of Desperate Dan , Mini the Minx and Gnasher !

Those statues really surprised me when I saw them. Didn’t get to see that much of it though as I was there without a car, so was limited to the area where I was working (one of the smaller theaters there) and the pedestrianized area of the city center where our hotel was.

Even before listening I needed to decode the words:

Title Translated via Googlle Translate: Blessed/Happy Birds of Cuthbert
    Mull Moneastery

The Orthodox Monastery of All Celtic Saints was founded in 2010, when Fr Seraphim took over Kilninian, the Church of St Ninian and St Cuthbert, on the Isle of Mull in the Hebrides. The Church had been deconsecrated and was not in use.

Monastic history at Kilninian begins much earlier, towards the end of the sixth century. The first monastics settled here because of St Ninian’s Holy Well, a spring dedicated to St Ninian and known to have miraculous healing powers. The Celtic Monastery of St Ninian flourished from late 500s until the end of the first millennium, when the Viking attacks put an end to monastic life in the Isles.

After that time, Kilninian was abandoned for a few centuries, before being turned into a protestant parish. In 1755, a new church was built over the foundations of the earlier monastic one, and this is the church we use for our services today.

Since 2010, the Monastery has slowly grown, despite constant temptation. One of our most difficult moments was in November 2013, when the trees in the graveyard were broken by a storm and they fell over the church. An entire section of the roof and the bell tower were destroyed, leaving Kilninian exposed to the harsh rains and winds of the Atlantic. It took us over two years and over two hundred thousand pounds to repair this historical monument, which is listed as part of the national heritage.

The monastic community welcomes both brothers and sisters, living in separate accommodation and getting together for services. We are a multi-national community – our brothers and sisters come from Canada, the United Kingdom, Romania and the United States of America. Our daily and liturgical language is English.

We function under the jurisdiction of His Eminence Joseph, Metropolitan of Southern and Western Europe, Orthodox Patriarchate of Romania.

    OK… now I listen.

Nice. The Decent Sampler sounds available from Piano.co.uk for free are inspriring. I’m really glad there was no running water sounds. (Inside joke from a @Paulieworld thread).

  • This is what I like. Never heard of him before, so I have been listening for about a half hour now. Thanks for the recommendation.

  • Big seas. Big skies. Far horizons. Deep time, and in a very particular moment. Getting all this from the epiphanic swell of this. Great work. I can almost taste the salt tang in the air.

Agreed @McD , I’m finding the DS sounds very inspiring.
The support for the concert was https://midorijaeger.bandcamp.com , a young lady who played pizzicato cello and sang. She reminded me of John Martyn and then blow me she sang a JM song. Have a listen @Paulieworld (or anybody else)
    Thanks @Svetlovska for your comments.

  • Just ducky, Tony.

  • Lovely part of the world (Scottish Isles and NW England!) - lovely music too - especially for when the weather is calmer in those parts! I made a whole album inspired by my trip to Orkney and Shetland.

  • Can you point me to the album Colin ( @AlterEgo_UK ) ?
I’ve been to Orkney and the Hebrides but not Shetland.
Some friends got back from there last week and said how good it was so it’s on the list of places to go.

  • Absolutely breathtaking! Damn mate! :) How did you create such a vibe? I don't mean what apps you used, but what was your thinking process?

    Sure, here you go!

Hope you like it. It was a guided archeological trip my wife and I went on so we visited many interesting and ancient places!

  • Certainly good for that. When we were on Orkney we stayed at Skaill House which is right next to Skara Brae. An amazing place.
I’ll listen to your album asap 😊
