VirSyn AudioLayer latest version, PB range bug or is it me?

Curious if anyone else with this app notices this. I'm pretty sure it's new since the last update, at least for me. Pitch bend range is always on maximum no matter the setting, on any midi channel except channel 1! On CH 1 it behaves normally. I see this running both standalone and as an AUv3 in AUM. I have an iPad 9G running iOS 16.3.

  • I can see a MPE Pitch Bend option in settings with 12,24… 84 options. MPE is designed to put different notes on channels 2-15 and reserve 1 for other commands.

I do see a Pitch Bend control for any AudioLayer Preset on the Instrument page that can be lowered to 0 or the standard 2.

For me just staying on channel 1 is fine because AUM manages one-to-one MIDI routing so I don’t see the problem.

Harry at @virsyn seems to be running crazy putting out fires. If this is a fire maybe you will get a fix.

  • I don't remember seeing that MPE Pitch Bend option, then again I don't use an MPE controller. I'm not near my iPad now but will look into this tomorrow.

My setup is a little complicated with AUM being fed by Midiflow, modified with Streambyter scripts. Everything was working fine with my setup having this instance of AudioLayer on channel 3. I would really like to keep it that way, but I suppose I could figure out a workaround to have it on channel 1 if I had to.

  • It looks like the “MIDI Input” setting set to 3 will help avoid that MPE behavior on te Pitch Bends. I think the default is OMNI and there are MPE Master of 1 or 16 available.

If the pitchbend for a preset is too wide change it on the Instrument Page:

Thanks for trying to help. I certainly know where the pitch bend range is set - my first post here describes how changing it has no effect. I just spent a while trying different settings in the MIDI input section: MPE Master 1, MPE Master 16, OMNI, and all 16 channels. Obviously AudioLayer doesn't respond if it's set to receive on one of the 16 midi channels and my keyboard is transmitting on a different one. When I match the midi channels, again, the pitch bend range is always maximum no matter what value I set in the "Instrument Scope" page - except when I use midi channel 1: in that case the setting works normally. After reading your post, I tried the first three settings: MPE Master 1, MPE Master 16, and OMNI. On all three of these settings AudioLayer responds on all 16 midi channels, however once again the pitch bend range parameter is functional only when my keyboard is transmitting on channel 1; otherwise, like before it seems to always be on it's maximum setting. The "MPE Pitchbend" parameter has no effect at all on this behavior. If I'm doing something wrong or not understanding how these parameters interact, I'm happy to be set straight - but right now this sure looks like a bug to me!

(BTW, except for the pitchbend range, none of the other parameters mentioned are available when AudioLayer is running as an AUv3 instance in AUM).

  • Thanks espiegel123. I messaged Harry at the VirSyn website a few days ago, then decided to post here as I genuinely thought I might be misunderstanding a setting (also, Harry responded to me here once). Let me be clear: I absolutely love this app! I've used a laptop rig for over 15 years, and because of AudioLayer I can now do gigs using my old 2016 iPhone SE! I'm not aware of any other sampler app for the iOS/iPAdOS platform that has the power this one has. I will roll with whatever happens. I'm sure either I'll be set straight on what I'm misunderstanding, or if it's a bug then it will be fixed at some point. In the meantime I'll just disable pitchbend reception on that AUM channel. I can use my modwheel to add LFO pitch modulation and that will suffice for now. I'm grateful to have this app!

  • @reezekeys I'm just back in my studio and could test this. It turns about that this is a bug - as soon as you leave channel 1 the pitch bender believes it's in MPE mode and therefore taking the bend amount from MPE Pitchbend instead. Will be fixed as soon as possible.

  • Thanks for checking this out Harry! I look forward to the fix, whenever you can get to it.
