Anyone recommend some new-ish (<3yrs) iPhone apps for a bit of sketching sound design on the go?
Haven't been around here in a while. Hi all
What's everyone been up to?
I recently updated my phone after many years (battery was not in good shape) so I'm thinking about refreshing my audio toolbox on it. I've fallen into using an MPCliveII+M32+DFAM combo for most of my live/studio work, which has reduced the amount I use an iPad for production (still use BM3 a bit when I can't bring the MPC along).
I'd like you all to lend me your creativity and inspiration to recommend some apps to install and play with. Ideally the outcome would be to produce either short sketches of 30s-2mins that I can develop further in the studio/rehearsal room or designing interesting sounds that I can load into the MPC drum sampler or as a keygroup (melodic instrument) then use for sketching/performing on there.
Priority on:
- fun/creative, unique
- largely stand-alone with maybe 1-3 AUs needed max per project
- battery efficient
- no subscription
I was heavily engaged in iOS releases until around 2019-2020, so things released/updated since then would be most interesting.
Thanks all. Hopefully I'll be able to share some cool sounds made by suggestions soon
I'll make another thread shortly (or maybe medium-ly) with info on what I've been up to.

Maybe the forthcoming BAM groove box by Imaginando will fill those requirements? Should be out in about a month - and @sinosoidal seems fairly up for adding people to the beta so you might be able to test it?
Drambo
Dies it have to be > 3 years old? Or did you maybe mean < 3 years old?
oh yeah you're correct -- fixed
it can be older too, but I might have tried it in that case -- always good to revisit things though
I think this is going to come up a lot.
If it’s standalone you’re looking at, maybe consider Korg Gadget.
BAM won't be available for iPhone I'm afraid
Ah ok, I will check it out on iPad anyway
Drambo seems to be the gold standard of universal apps, and I like it for building modular patches. (Although on iPad I like miRack a bit more for that task since I feel like I'm "getting my hands dirty", and though miRack is universal, if you've tried it on an iPhone you know already what a pain the tinier UI is to deal with.)
However Koala Sampler with all IAPs unlocked (which is, if my math is right, roughly $15 altogether) is what I'm currently using. It's a relatively simple sampler on the surface but can go very, very deep! Here's what can be made with just the stock samples that come with it (and a vinyl crackle sound I found on freesound.org).
And here's what can be made with one's own samples.
Lofi isn't the only genre Koala is capable of mind you. What genre(s) are you looking to produce mate?
@jwmmakerofmusic I do have Koala and it's expansions -- had a lot of fun with it. I think the reason I don't use it more is that I usually go to my MPC for the sampling workflow. I perform live with semi modular synths and I feel like Drambo is something I need to try out.

Ah, sorry Nuno, I focused on his 4 numerically listed requirements bit and completely missed the iPhone requirement, cheers!
Whoa that's amazing mate! That's you? Man you're hella excellent!
Yeah I don't have any sampling hardware, so that's why I love Koala Sampler. It's fantastic for portable sampling on the go.
But yes, then I must recommend Drambo. It definitely is the Swiss Army Knife of iOS apps.
GR-16, Koala, and Drambo are what I recommend for quick, sketch pad-like apps on iPhone. You can get alot done in those three apps.
@OscarSouth If you perform wirh modular, then maybe miRack is also worth to try ?
Of course Drambo is probably final solution. Endless source of inspiration, endless source of sound design hapiness.
Orher than that - often overlooked by many because of limited sequencing capabilities and lack of connectivity, bit extremely usable for quick improvisations and sketches - Novation Groovebox
Nanostudio 2, Animoog Z, Drambo have a lot to offer on the iPhone. Loopy Pro…which nicely lets you design integrated control surfaces for your effects and synths.
Ableton Note 🤷♂️ It’s definitely fun and unique, made for quick sketches, and you can use your own samples. No AUs though.
I guess in my mind, once you start adding the ability to host Aus, seems like the rest of such apps takes a backseat and you end up losing some fun factor
Definitely drambo, maybe koala
Koala, Drambo, and Gadget are usually my go to apps on iPhone. I don’t use it often (I’m mostly iPad) but I find those 3 to be the most feature rich while also having a tolerable UI on a smaller iPhone screen.
I know you said you’re into modular so I’d also check out MiRack, iVCS3, Ripplemaker, KQ Minisynth, Tera Pro, and Mela 4.
