AU or VST3 on desktop (m1)?
Assuming both are M1 native, which would you install / use and why? Im seeing alot of mixed opinions about this, curious to see what my favorite forum has to say.
Comments
I install both, but mostly use VST3 for cross-platform compatibility with Windows tho I rarely use Windows anymore. Also, some DAWs don't support AU like Bitwig.
AU is really just for Logic or HostingAU, which I prefer using for sound design.
A lot has been said about one being better than the other, but frankly I don’t think any of the arguments are supported by evidence.
It’s probably just down to preference - whatever format you prefer you can choose as your primary plugin format.
Generally I only install AU, but I’m sure I wouldn’t notice any difference if I had chosen VST.
I just did some testing with interesting results. i would slap 30 of the same AU with the same settings on a track, and then 30 of the exact same VST3 with the same settings on another, and compare abletons CPU meter.
Some plugins reported the same usage, but quite a few showed significantly lower CPU usage while using VST3. Anywhere from 5-15%!!! 15% percent is a pretty big gap....
Going to continue testing with more plugs.
Some MIDI sequencers only work correctly as VST3s - like Riffer.
In Ableton, AUv3s can’t output midi to other tracks. I usually install both the VST3 and AU versions, but I don’t have that many plugins.
Also, if you’re using Logic on both Mac and iOS, you’ll want AUs for project compatibility across devices.
