Bardcore is the best! Listen to her 'Creep' cover too... and I'm come back to edit to add 'Holding out for a hero' too!
Really great genre name anyway! Wasn't that mad about this cover but I like the sentiment very much. Anyone into medieval vibes mixed with rock etc will probably enjoy the early output of the band Espers. Check out this for example, love it!
Or for a slightly more bonkers take, Circulus (definitely need to listen to the whole thing, one of the best mushrooms songs ever haha):
@Gavinski : thanks for these suggestions. Never heard of the band before, I like Moon Occults The Sun a lot. Takes me into folk horror territory, and that is always a good thing. It has a little of the psychedelic wig out of Inna Gadda Da Vida too.
They have a few really great songs on those first 2 albums, yes! The Circulus stuff is a very mixed bag (although I do think the 1 and 2 star reviews from the Guardian back in the day were slightly harsh lol) but there are a few bona fide gems amongst their output and it sounds like they would have been fun to watch live. The singer took his role as a kind of unsexy Wicker Man Jim Morrison very seriously.
Lots of very serious people doing very serious work!
Not trying to be disrespectful, but lately I am more on the nerdy stupid side of covers. This one went viral 1 year ago but still I cannot stop laughing everytime (the guy must have spent days doing this...)
Does this count…The bands virtuoso recorder player Richard Harvey went on to carve out a career on film and tv soundtracks
Makes me think of words like ‘rebec ’ and ‘serpent’ , ‘psaltery’ and maybe ‘shawm’. I’m also guessing that Gryphon didn’t trouble the charts much. Interesting, but a bit too polite and middle class for my taste. I tend to prefer my medieval a little more bare chested. Quite literally.
Or maybe something that puts the ‘evil’ in ‘medieval’:
Just remember to toss a coin to the Witcher…
These are cool... Yeah that Gryphon stuff, like a lot of English 70s folk stuff had not aged well, imo. Some of the Fairground Convention stuff has, Crazy Man Michael being a lovely example. Also some Nic Jones, for example Courting is a Pleasure. Just my own personal opinions, as always!
I can be wrong, but this seems like it could vibe with you @Svetlovska
They had me at the antlers on their heads.
And now: Bardcore which has an actual degree in Early Middle English:
And then there’s Latin:
Another lovely cover...
A sub-genre here is bardcore that actually turns out to be the original version.
My favourite in this category is "Tempus Adest Floridum", which was a spring carol long before its modern association as a christmas carol.
As I went to a spring festival today in New Zealand, I thought I'd share my never promoted before cover version featuring myself attempting to play the recorder.

@belldu : Brilliant! I love the arrangement you have built round the recorder. I’m going to send the link to a friend who has recently taken up the recorder again as an adult having last played it as a child, as an example of what it can achieve. Inspiring stuff
