Sequencing
When you record with an auv3 the midi track is empty right? How does one get an auv3 to “print” or “record” while it plays so that you can edit, do automations, or do on the fly things while it record? In other words is there a way to add or edit stuff like hammerhead, playbeat or beat scholar ?
I dont know the term for it but I’m sure there is one for saving an auv3 drums or recording the drums? Please use beat scholar or hammerhead or playbeat for reference if you can help me out
Also what sequencers are generative like Octachron?
Thanks

What host you use?
I use Zenbeats . And then DRambo. (If all else fails I’ll use Cubasis)
In Zenbeats enable Print MIDI Fx to get the notes.
Automation is a problem in Zenbeats. You can only record it if you control the AU parameters from an external hardware controller.
In Drambo you don't need to do anything too special. Map any controls you will be moving by opening the AU and then tapping Map at the right-hand side. Move controls, then turn off map. Now hit Rec on the AU module and Play in Drambo. Your automations will now be recorded.
That’s not a problem. In fact you were who sold me on it after confirming the hardware controller method worked whereas other DAW had mixed results.
But wim, how do you record let’s say a fill or a roll? You use Zenbeats, so do you use any of those apps and if not with ZR1 how do you make fills and retrigger etc??
What’s your drum making process sort of like. I can Pm you also too if you want
Thanks , print midi fx got me to use scalebud 2
Do you know how to do this in Logic as well? I was trying yesterday and couldn’t get it to work.
@dreamcartel how are you liking Zenbeats? I’m using Logic only right now but may end up cycling back around eventually.
Also I believe you can still draw in automation in ZB, but you can only record knob movement from an external controller.
Sorry, I don't have much feedback on that subject. If not using something like GarageBand Drummer or the Lumbeats apps I generally just try to edit the MIDI after the fact.
But there are a couple of things I have done more for fun than anything else. The first is to use Ruismaker's patterns and its morph/random settings. What I'll do is copy a pattern, reduce the number of notes in it, and then crank up the randomization. That results in a kind of cheesy "fill". Then I set the pattern chaining up so that it jumps to the fill pattern after 3 or 7 bars, etc. and then back to the original pattern. That's nothing I'd use to publish a song but it can at least break up a boring jam. Hammerhead can work well this way too.
Another is to use Drambo's cycle and randomization components in a similar way.
You might want to start a thread for this question. I'll bet you can get a lot of good feedback ... just not from me. 😂
Nope. I've never tried Logic and don't have plans to.
Fair enough. If anyone else knows I’d be all ears 😂 I guess I need to search the manual. Maybe I missed it.
Personally speaking I can’t say I found a better daw than Zenbeats. I don’t think it’s better than Logic, I think they are on the same level. I just simply prefer Zenbeats. I like to use instruments, my hardware and my interface and so far Zenbeats has been the most simple to interface with. I was almost going to give up on iOS DAWs and stick with only dRambo but Zenbeats changed my minds. The funny part is I only found Zenbeats because I was not feeling Logic , like I said “if logic don’t work it’s back to Cubasis and dRambo” but then Zenbeats had a little popularity over the summer. Wim actually made me investigate more and DmFan solidified it was a daw to contend with. The more time I put into it, the more my workflow improved. Now my ONLy limitation is my creativity (and drumming ability). I really think Zenbeats is the premier DAW for iOS , especially if you are an Ableton live user and like clip /pattern launching . If you haven’t bought it, just get the $15 version. I got the full platform unlock because it’s that good.
And thanks @wim. That little trick isn’t a bad idea. I think I’ll try some more experimenting and maybe get back to this with more specific questions
(Anyone who uses beat scholar or hammerhead Please let me know your ways of doing fills and any tips for using a drum auv3 and recording it)
@dreamcartel I agree. I think Zenbeats is the only other iOS DAW that can compete with Logic right now. Cubasis 3 is close and I have a big soft spot for it, but it’s not quite there.
My attention has been in logic lately but with my storage space running low, I’m considering uninstalling and sticking with C3 and Zenbeats until I upgrade iPads, but haven’t decided yet.
Glad you’re enjoying it and found a DAW that’s useful for you! 85% of my work is done in AUM, Koala, or Drambo. I generally only use a DAW to import stems from AUM to master them. (Which is another reason I’m unsure about $60 a year for logic since I don’t use it much).
What midi sequencers are just for drums?
Like Octachron is one example, and it uses smart randomization generative stuff
Are there any other MIDI DRUM Sequencers, (not just general sequencers) and do they do smart randomization like Octachron or playbeat 3?
I saw Polybeat but didn’t see randomization and then I saw Octachron (still waiting for 16 ).
Also side note, if you use the Volca drum machine with another synth like the Roland s-1, you are doing the 3.5mm to 3.5’m audio (audio out from Volca>audio in Roland s-1)? (‘You don’t need to connect midi right?)
The Rozeta suite has two different drum sequencers. I’m not familiar with mentioned sequencers so I can’t answer the second question.
MidiDreams comes with MidiDrums, Octachron, Rozetta has 2, Polybeat is fantastic, Poly 2 is amazing for drums as well.
Then there’s apps like Playbeat 3, Drum Computer, Egoist, that can also send midi to other drum machines. Maybe Hammerhead too but I can’t remember.
Yes, Hammerhead has midi out. Not all of its articulations are supported though. I forget the details, but there are some things that are internally processed only by design.
Gotcha, thanks for confirming. I was pretty sure but didn’t want to encourage them to buy an app without 100% knowing. Hammerhead is a great one, maybe my favorite drum machine.
