Bandcamp sold by Epic Games to Songtradr

Apparently Epic games only bought Bandcamp 18 months ago but sold it today 9-28-2023 to a music marketing company called Songtrdr.

F-ckin hell. Hopefully Bandcamp remains the same, or I'll have to reup my Lofi EPs to SoundCloud.

  • I hope this doesn’t spell the end of Bandcamp. It’s such a great idea and it needs to continue for the sake of the music industry.

  • I really thought this thread would generate more discussion. There is quite a bit of chatter on Mastodon by musicians and music lovers about this and little positive is being mentioned. Some are encouraging people to not panic. There are several tools available for downloading purchased music. I saw one post that mentioned the CEO of Songtrdr was a music fan and vinyl fan among a few other positive notes. I can’t find the post now…

  • wooh, bandcamp being thrown around like a broken toy.

Yea I don’t use it a ton but it did just happen, they at least claim to want to keep the focus the same, so that’s positive. only time will tell. It’s early days.

  • This is potentially awful news. I love bandcamp, it's a beacon for independent music and independent music lovers

Big tech hasn’t been all that friendly to the average Joe lately and I think we have become conditioned to expect the worst. If Songtrdr can leave the basics of BC alone and just add some value added type services to those that want to pay, it might all be okay. It is all just speculation at this point. I have quite the list for Bandcamp Friday next week so hopefully the status quo will last until then.

  • Note to self, none of these platforms are ours.

It might all be ok in a not unlike when Github was bought by Microsoft kind of way,

    and then again...

  • I hope they’ll at least improv the artist app. You can’t even upload songs on iPad or through safari on iPad right now. It definitely needs some work.

I hope the leave the rest alone though.

the whole union should do a bitwig and make notbandcamp (a la not ableton), cooperatively owned

im calling it now, RIP bandcamp

  • Tbh... The small number of views of, and comments on, this thread show that Bandcamp is maybe an irrelevance for most people here, so even more so in the wider community. A pity, indeed, but seems likely to be true.

Sad but probably true... :'( Every time I suggested Bandcamp for a hunting ground to those who look for something different, not even one of them heard about it before. Almost looks like a musicians-supporting-musicians place only. That shouldn't be true, I hope?? Incidentally, this similar Bandcamp-Songtradr thread on Elektronauts is also much smaller than it could be.

  • I never really took a serious look at Bandcamp after seeing that they had a history of removing artists based on political ideology.

  • The concept of Bandcamp is a good idea.

But, depending on what a tech company is going to offer you is probably a recipe for disaster in the long term.

There was a time when everyone just had their own website and they were therefore in control of what they were doing to a certain extent. Facebook and Twitter are becoming more closed circuits by the day. The Internet itself is a bit of a closed shop in general. IMHO of course.

It’s probably time for a new take on the way people do what they do and how to connect to each other.

Who did they remove because of political ideology?

  • Have had a Bandcamp account for years. Sold a tiny amount of music. This corporate takeover business has ruined independent distribution of art. I see a monthly subscription model in Bandcamp's future.

So much truth in that. Unfortunately 'free' systems tend towards monopolies over time due to the fact that freedom backed with power and money tends to have a lot more reach than freedom without that backing.

  • Only just seen this, what a shame if it ends up a subscription service. It’s been nice to be able to get more of my money to artists I support and some big names are on there now too. I suppose I’d better get all my purchased music downloaded just in case.

  • Bandcamp Friday (no fees for artists) still going for the next 18 hours: https://isitbandcampfriday.com

  • Really hoping for the best but preparing for the worst with this one. Sad sad news.

Agreed. A couple bigger artists I love will actually release special editions only on Bandcamp. This is a shame.

  • Songtraitor laid off half the Bandcamp staff today.

    Sheesh. Not a good sign.

Not uncommon when a business is sold. Them's the breaks.

what exactly has changed? The cost of maintaining a website?

Since the late 90’s I wanted to have a website, but never managed to do it. What are your experiences with your website?
