«The Way You Want It» bittersweet pop Collab with Richard Yot inspired by Spector’s wall of sound
2 months ago @richardyot sent me a guitar/voice draft of this song. His email ended by (quoting) "Obviously no obligation to work on this tune I won't be offended if you decide it's not for you."
After the first listen, I was already madly in love with the song. I read his email again and laugh out loud thinking "how can he possibly think I would pass on this thing?!"
Because of the melody and bittersweet lyrics, the idea to arrange it in a 60s vibe came up very quickly. Being a lover of the infamous Spector's wall of sound and the pop jewels he created with Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, I decided to take this direction. I kept Richard original rhythm guitar that can be heard on the left. Then, A few chord substitutions to bring a retro vibe here, bunch of acoustic and electric guitars layers there, a touch of harpsichord (Pianoteq, app of the year!) And eventually, the "Be My Baby" drum quote... As Richard said, if it is good for Jesus and Mary Chain, it's good for me 😄
It took me weeks to come up with a mix I liked, but here it is finally. Particularly happy with the way Richard vocals and mine are blending on this one.
Produced exclusively on iPad. Hope some of you will enjoy
Lyrics in the spoiler
If you say you don’t wanna
If you say there’s no way
That we can see each other
Through the haze and the pain
Well here am I and here are you
Always believing the things that we do
It’s never gonna go the way you want it
I’m never gonna show the love you wanted
You’ll never get to know the dreams of comfort
That you wanted to
In the end does it matter
If we go our own way
It’s your dreams that were shattered
When they got in my way

Throwing the ambient haters a bone with some ‘proper’ music lads! Really excellent. Reminds me a bit of Richard Hawley - those who don’t know him could check out the fantastic ‘Tonight the Streets are Ours’. Of course, he owes a massive debt to the 60s, and this track has a much bigger indie influence.
You mentioned a Be My Baby reference at the end, and I hear the part you’re talking about - one of the best songs ever blew, as far as I’m concerned - but for me the most noticeable bit was the drums at the start. A noticeable ripoff homage indeed! Super catchy track, brllliant work, and shows that you can indeed do a good job mixing vocals on an iPad.
I don’t know for others. Sometimes I play three things at the same time: video, podcast, and song, or two different songs plus a noir movie, or straight three songs in different genres. It's not easy to pin the best combination, but when you do succeed, it’s pure magic.
This work started easy, like early J&MC, and then became a meteor shower of magic! 🤩
Thanks for listening and commenting - I'm a huge fan of Richard Hawley, I have all his solo albums, Lady's Bridge is my favourite, with Cole's Corner a close second.
I'm pretty sure that @JanKun was actually referring to the intro beat his post BTW Did you know that Hal Blaine created it accidentally because he dropped his sticks during the session? Serendipity.
Ah - maybe he meant ‘eventually’ not in the timeline of the song but in the creative process I guess. Interesting factoid, wow. Just one of the best and most recognizable drum beats ever.
Great, now I'm listening to Hawley. Whats next?! … nothing to complain about, though.
He’s a modern-day Lee Hazelwood, except he speaks in a thick Sheffield accent, which sounds really weird when you’re used to his smooth singing voice 😆
Great song, I am enjoying the 60s vibe. ☮️✌️
One small constructive criticism, when listening on my phone in mono the arpegiated guitar becomes really super loud. In stereo it’s well mixed.
Nice tune! The 60s vibe comments are apt, but I also hear that kind of mid-80s UK jangle pop sound too.
Sorry for the confusion, the "eventually" was about the creation process, not the song timeline.
Glad you enjoyed the track. Definitely can understand the Richard Hawley reference! I am not familiar with his whole catalogue, now I know what to listen to this winter !
Be my baby is definitely one of the best pop song ever written, if not the best ...
Borrowing the drums can definitely be seen as a rip-off, it is so great it can lift a whole track to a different level !
Always nice to have you commenting here! Wondering what are the 2 other tracks you played this one !
I listened to a few songs today. Now I definitely have to listen to an interview ! 😄
He's good friends with Jarvis Cocker, as they're both from Sheffield, and he tours with Pulp as their second guitarist.
Thank you for listening! It is strange... I checked the mix in mono inside Logic before uploading to SoundCloud and everything was balanced ...
You didn’t understand me, your song reminded me of that particular quality. But I will gladly give you some mixing ideas; you need to listen to them at the same time. Albinoni's Adagio + Jocelyn Pook + some talk from Watts, Sagan, RAW, Wallace, a poem recital, or any other podcast. There are countless combinations. My entire fav list on YouTube contains those combinations, haha. 😅
“Not The Only Road“ is freaking fantastic! 🤩
Got you ! You should make track of those mixes !
It is indeed fantastic. I listened to many Richard Hawley songs and I wonder why I haven't done it before. He is in the same category as those great musicians/ craftmans like John Parish, Adrian Utley, M Ward.
I don't know if any of you know about Timber Timbre. He has very similar qualities too and an incredible voice:
Thank you for chiming in. Glad you noticed, I had Johnny Marr in mind for the arpegiated guitars !
@JanKun I haven’t listened to Timber Timbre for years! I’ll check those videos out.
Oh, what did you do, … 🤩 I need to listen more and will be back with impressions. So far, it's on the same page as Richard Hawley.
BTW, the first two videos can’t be viewed in my region.
You enlarged my Canadian list, haha! A few songs were familiar, I probably listened to them without knowing. I managed to listen to a lot of songs; the most noticeable are “Sugar Land”, “Demon Host”, “Black Water”, ...
Missed this first time around! Love the beat - yes an homage to the wall of sound but also it reminded me of The Stone Roses for some reason. Spector meets Stone Roses? Enjoyed it anyway!
You're into Canadian bands? My favourites are GY!BE and Do Make Say Think !
Timber Timbre is not as famous as people like Feist or Arcade Fire but I believe he deserves more recognition. What a voice he has! You probably heard some of his music in movies or series. I really love his whole album "Creep On Creeping On" where Black Water comes from. There is another song there called "Woman" which always sticks in my head !
Not particularly, it’s just lots of Canadians high on my music repertoire. Bowie did a lot for Arcade Fire recognition. "Creep On Creeping On" caught my attention too, TT is a really great band. I wrongly thought that I heard them on “Homicide: Life on the Street". Well, now I’m rewatching that series too. 😂
The 'wall of sound' is on the money; great collaboration!
I have no idea who or what anybody is talking about, but I did involuntarily listen to my fair share of oldies and can hear that this piece sounds rich! I listened back to back and this is my favorite of Richard’s so far, albeit I haven’t listened to everything he’s done.
Great job to the two of you❤️
Thank you for listening, Colin !
I didn't think of the Stone Roses, but now that you mention it, I get it ! Something in the mix, maybe ?
Maybe I’m just old school, but this brings me back to about 1982, Modern English. Many nights clubbing, drinking, dancing with pretty girls at Mothers, Thirsty Whale, and so many others. Thanks for the memories!
Thank you for listening !
Thank you for the feedback! I am sure @richardyot Will appreciate !
