Joy & Sorrow, a song collaboration with @Paulieworld

When @Paulieworld posted his instrumental “Joy & Sorrow” I thought it might work as a foundation for a song. I’d been experimenting with the AI powered voices Emvoice (on desktop) wanted to use this as a learning opportunity. He graciously allowed me to try this.

The title reminded me of some verses by William Blake (my go-to mystic / romantic poet) so I began with that:

Joy and woe are woven fine
A garment for the soul divine.
Inside every grief and every pine.
runs a joy with silken twine.

We are made for joy and woe.
And when this we rightly know.
Through the world we safely go.

Emvoice has various ‘voices’ and I used the one called Lucy. It (she?) has a high, thin, delicate voice; not very strong. So I doubled it on two tracks. Emvoice does allow for some decent editing as far as notes and timing; you can add varying amounts of vibrato but not much expression. Although Lucy’s pronunciations are fairly okay, you might need to read the verses to know what she’s singing.

To fill in for Lucy’s thin voice I also added another desktop voice sampler: Hollywood Backup Singers; actual singers not AI.

Then I imported the stems of as separate tracks back to the iPad where I put it together with the Audio Evolution DAW where I added some effects.

  • Very beautiful adaptation of Blake masterpiece

    "Every Night & every Morn
    Some to Misery are Born
    Every Morn and every Night
Some are Born to sweet delight
Some are Born to sweet delight
Some are Born to Endless Night "

I tend to prefer the back up signer, which btw you used very smartly ! I love the main melody you composed for Blake's poetry and I am sure you took emvoice to its current limits with this great piece of work. But I must admit Lucy doesn't yet speak to my soul. Luckily the words she sings do !

  • Lovely music and harmonies - I am glad Lucy still sounds like an A.I. as I wouldn't like to see real singers completely replaced! She does sound pleasant enough though!
I am also a fan of William Blake so love the subject matter as well.

  • This is interesting and Blake is a good choice for inspiration - is there anything like Emvoice on iOS?

I want to hear Mr. Blue Sky now.

I really value your input! Blake has had a big effect on me going back a long time. He seems like what might be called an early multi-media artist. Benjamin Britten wrote a set of songs based on his verses including the one you quoted here. You might like those.

I totally agree with you about the Lucy voice. Lucy and AI is soulless. Although if they can somehow improved it and add some ways to at least have more expression, just like sampled instruments, it might offer some use for experiments.

I think there is an app but can't recall the name now. But I don't know how it compares. The Emvoice has a well thought out timeline editor that's easy to use. Getting word phrasing right is an interesting challenge. Just holding one word or syllable can make a big difference. I got Lucy on a sale price on a whim. The developers are saying they're working on improving it.

I want to hear Mr. Blue Sky now.

You'll have to explain the reference for me there.

  • Very unusual. After my own tastes.

I appreciate you taking a listen. @Paulieworld's original piece inspired the song idea to me from the start. It showed a path to a melody fairly quickly. It has a nice breathing movement and a feeling of sections I could build on.

I've been wondering about your music plans. Are you just taking a breather, shifting gears, or just otherwise occupied?

Lucy sounds a bit like the early vocoder/synth on Mr. Blue Sky by ELO. I think I’ll have to try doing this on my phone.

  • Fascinating track, really enjoyed it. Great collaboration with @Paulieworld 🙏

Hey thanks for listening! I wonder when/if this kind of vocal synth will ever be as expressive as Geoshred?
