Oh damn…I think I remember you use these on a Surface? I think it might be time I picked up a 2nd hand one. What do you think would be a model to go for that wouldn’t cost an arm and a leg and will be viable for a good few years?
Not quite a surface, but the cheapo version, I use a Dell venue 11 pro, it's the 4gb M5 version. I think the model number is 7140. It's okay for running these things but I have to set the power saving thing to "performance" or it crackles a lot I would say a surface would probably be better. Go for an i3 processor and 8gb of ram if you can but honestly if you aren't going too crazy you can make do with 4gb. Mine is 10.5 inches and the UI is pretty small so maybe something in the surface pro range would be better on the eyes. Mine cost me 125 euros on eBay and I'm satisfied with the performance for that price. I'm not running any daws. Reaktor works well too and there are some awesome community made patches for it. There's a really good stargazer clone for free that's a lot of fun
It's just a shame GS has no interest in developing for ios and has shown an animosity to the whole ios Paradigm, so we won't ever get his apps on ipad. They are the most ipadish non ipad apps out there.
Still, a cheap windows tablet is cheaper than a norns or an ipad, so it's not such a big deal I guess.
@Gavinski : check Molten Modular.
He has specialised in covering the various generations of Surface Pro as a music maker. On his recommendation I got a Surface Pro 8 Intel Core i5 Tablet with16GB RAM and 256GB SSD for just over a grand to run Bitwig on. (The i5 is actually better than the i7 because of the way the faster chip throttles things when running at capacity - he explains it in the vid - and the side benefit is i5s are cheaper. )
Works great. Now all I need to do is understand Bitwig.
So: last year’s model, but with enough grunt to remain relevant for some time to come. And Windows gear is less subject to the destructive upgrade cycle of Apple stuff.
I intend too to run it as a standalone instrument for such things as Giorgio’s devices. (I have a couple of his earlier things already.)
.
The described system would set you back around £440 in Behringer clones. Plus eurorack case. How much is a surface pro?
hmm, why animosity I wonder? his apps are basically ipad price on desktop anyway. God, you can get a windows tablet that cheap, that’s mad. I would definitely consider one just for his apps. Would be nice to also be able to use Plasmonic and some of my other desktop mpe synths again (my Mac laptop is bust, and I shipped it back to the UK anyway)
Oh Jesus - a grand is well out of my price range, god no. Just bought a new (2nd hand) Pro last year, something in the few hundred bucks range would be the only thing I could consider
Yeah but you’re talking just about this app? I would install all his apps. That would cost you a lot in hardware, and I like to keep mobile anyway. No intention either of going down any hardware or modular rabbit holes!
I think its cos he's a bit of an anarchist and he doesn't like the walled garden. I mean he doesn't even do vsts just standalone instruments which I kind of admire!!
Windows laptops and tablets are well cheap on second hand because they are used as office machines then replaced after 2 years. You can get machines that cost thousands for peanuts.
If you don't mind something a bit chunky a ThinkPad convertible could be a good choice. I have a ThinkPad 11e yoga i3 version. Cost me under 200 euros and is very capable. That way you have a keyboard attached for when you need it
I think I need something kind of streamlined, as I’m in a nomadic phase at the moment and already have a bit too much stuff!
I have most of his apps. I’m mostly trying to convince myself that a Barp 2500 is not just feasible but basically a steal. An obligation if you will.
Haha, who am I to come in the way of a man and his AAS / GAS, rock on brother!
I bought Ongaku last year. Love those crazy oscillators!
Windows is about as far from ‘anarchy’ as one can get. Microsoft is the definition of corporate-first.
LOL!
You can sell from your own site on windows/mac... Maybe he's a free marketeer!?
he's said in the past he hates touch surfaces and he doesn't have the cash to port anything to ios. So I guess it is more that than anything else
Good choice. Stay far, far away from eurorack if you value not being broke all the time.
I just thought maybe I’d he was a proper anarchisto he might support Linux, but no links for that on his site as far as I can see, would be nice though…
That would be uhmazing!! Anyways I think he’s not really an anarchist, I just flippantly said that and now everyone is making him out to be Pierre Joseph Proudhon!!!
I only use tools of the revolution now ✊
I think i remember he said in an interview (long time ago) why no VST (iOS) that he writes in a MAX didn't want the hassle with export tools to JUCE and tweaking. Would be nice to have but, i kinda like his way and have no problem running the audio to a DAW. Getting a cheap laptop for touch sounds interesting too.
His latest (No-Fi) has been released - only standalone as with all his instruments and Mac only for now, but this looks like a winner for me!
