How do I find Sample Crate to import from an Audio Unit?

Normally from my Audio Unit I would hit ‘import’ - AudioShare appears under ‘Locations’ and off I go to import it. I want to try it with Sample Crate to audition the samples first. When I press ‘import’ - I can’t see it as an option anywhere. It’s not under ‘Locations’ or ‘On my iPad’ so how do I find it?

  • You browse files.

Sample crate is a files app overlay ?

  • The 'import' function in most AUv3's use the standard Files.app 'Document Picker'.

And yes, as @sigma79 mentions Sample Crate is an alternate 'browser overlay' using the system features with some added functionality.

In order to be able to preview samples in the AUv3's the plug-in developers would have to add a preview to their import function.

This can be done but requires a bit of work...
Koala Sampler is one App/AUv3 which has quite well implemented import features using the document picker.
I particularly like the Samples browser which allows me to add most locations on the iPad for quick in-line browse and preview.

So @robosardine I'd suggest getting in touch with developer of the Audio Unit in question and ask if they would be willing to add a preview function to their plug-in.

    Cheers!

  • I’m just not getting it - if I do a search - ‘on my iPad’ (after asking to import audio) a Sample crate icon appears - but it’s empty. When I open it from the home screen it contains all my AudioShare files. I’m just not savvy with the file arranging and moving process.

    Ah right thanks @Samu.
So even in the case of Koala you still can’t preview a sample before importing?
And some AU apps allow sample previews and some don’t? Which are some of the ones that do that I might try to help me get my head round this?
How are people using Sample Crate in relation to AU’s?

You can definitely preview sounds before importing them when using the 'import' function.

Koalas 'Samples' tab is just shows the content of the 'locations' and you can preview the sounds before dragging them to pads. When you drag them to the pads they are copied into the project.

  • OK thanks @Samu I shall have a look at it when I get home. 👍

  • @Samu - of course it works a treat. Why didn’t I know that? I mean what a goofball! I’m sure (probably many years ago) you couldn’t audition before importing. I think I must have missed that update 😅 Ah well… better late than never.

Koala has improved quite a bit since it's initial release and it's getting better with every update :sunglasses:
