Television Set- Depeche Mode instrumental cover

You like the sound of repetitive monophonic synth from the early 80’s, enjoy!

If you don’t, this will most likely give you a major headache and severe stress reactions😎.

Help me, give me constructive feedback!

  • Nice, good old days

I only heard that track as some bootleg live performance. I don’t think any studio recording extist, right?

Maybe try to add a sound that would play the vocal melody. Also you could try and sample a snare from Speak&Spell. From the top of my head I think you can get it from Just Can’t Get Enough.

    That’s right!

It was never recorded, only played live. Bootlegs are on YT so I figured a cover would be in order.

Thanks for the ideas, I’ll leave the piece as it is for now though. Might give the singing a try later on.

Got another classic in the works😁.

  • It’s a great track. You did a great job.

That’s actually a great idea ^ maybe drop in a sample ? I wouldn’t alter the instrumental stuff much if at all, it just needs some sprinkles

As a teenager in the early 80s I was obsessed with Depeche mode. This is a fantastic rendition and a shame it was never included on the 1st album. Why this song was omitted and What's your name? was put on the album is beyond me.

How about a cover of Now this is fun? The B side to See you.

    How kind, thank you!

We’ll see about more early DM covers😉. Long time since I listened to Now this is fun…

Television Set is a great song. I also intended to do a cover version, with distorted synths like on the live recording. And then do a mono mix. Also Reason Man and other early songs.

Such a dense sound at these concerts! There exist two recordings of Television set, both are good. Well, good in a musical, atmospheric sense. The sound quality is very low. High and low frequencies missing, respectively pressed into a narrow mid spectrum.

Critique of the cover version: the song could profit of the heavily compressed snare sound Depeche Mode used. I believe it was a TR-808. Or use a sample as @branis suggested. The beginning of Just Can’t Get Enough is a good tip. All tracks would sound better with some processing. But generally it is well done, congratulations!

P.S. I just saw that there is a video recording of this song, in much better sound quality as the bootlegs. It’s a premiere for me, never seen this one.

    Great feedback, thanks!

My cover is raw and could absolutely do with more processing. My intention was not to make a remake sounding as close as possible to the original, just a cover close enough. It is my way of learning the tools and techniques😁.

This video is new to me as well, cool!

  • that’s exactly my method also. Doing a cover version, learning how to program beat box, sequencer, synth, how to record and arrange, sound engineering, mixing.

Did you see, there’s the lyrics also in that video, below in the description.

The Price Of Love is also a good old song of Depeche Mode.

What do you think: the bass drum two bars earlier, and the snare drum 8 bars later?
