An electric Kazoo. Really: Uncertainty Management

“Uncertainty management is the process by which individuals create meaning or understanding in situations in which something unpredictable, unusual, unexpected, or out of the ordinary occurs and when there is a need to determine the appropriate meaning.” - management textbook.

So my £10 electric kazoo arrived this morning. Well, strictly speaking, my £5 ordinary acoustic kazoo, and another £5 for the complementary prong thing, which pushes into the little resonator holes on the kazoo, and is presumably a piezo based gizmo, complete with separate 3.5mm to standard Jack cable, which let me hook it up direct to my Irig, fire up AUM, and get, er, humming. At last, an instrument I might be able to play! It’s this one:

Everything you hear, from the bass drone out, is generated live from successive File Player loops of the raw kazoo, recorded in AUM with a whole mess of fx apps, including, for the guitar like string stabs, CuSnP.

There are no other instruments, no sequencing, just my, er, ‘improv’. Definitely low effort. :)

  • Haha I absolutely love this. It’s like psychotic tier free jazz. Feel like I’m in Lost Highway 😂 I need to get me an electric kazoo. The film in the resonator of mine broke so I’m kazoo-less right now.

    How do you like that iRig? Looks like it’s just one input correct?

  • Nice use of the kazoo - I wouldn’t have known what you made it with if you hadn’t let us know.

    Makes me think of some kind of barren post-apocalyptic world.

  • Love it. Do you have a link where I can find this?

    @HotStrange : ‘psychotic tier free jazz’ - I’m taking that to the bank! :)

    My kazoo came with a whole pot of spare resonator discs, so I should be good for a while. Yes, the irig is a single input, primarily for guitar but anything works, it has a broad input range. The irig has a zero latency headphone port, so you can monitor your sound, with fx etc, as you record and play back into the iPad. Makes for a very lightweight noodle option for mike equipped instruments.

    @michael_m : Thank you! :)

    @Ben : I couldn’t find my exact model. But this is close:

    Haha glad you enjoyed :)

    Thanks! I need a lightweight interface but would prefer 2 inputs so may have to go with the Duo. I’m guessing you got the kazoo from Amazon?

  • I was listening to jazz record requests this afternoon and it featured Red McKenzie playing comb and tissue paper. Another one to add to your collection ?
    Excellent track again 👍

  • I had something like this a while back, called the Kazooka. I’d run it through guitar effects for a convincingly grungy solo. It stopped working after a while, but I had a lot of fun with it, and wouldn’t mind re-upping to this one. Now I want to run it through Roxsyn. Thanks for the info!
