How to record on the iPad while making calls on the iPad?

Apps like FaceTime etc don't allow you to screen record while making a call. Free version of Zoom also won't allow this. Tried on my Android with WhatsApp and pressing record will immediately force quit the app.

So is there any solution that will allow me to record calls received in apps on my ipad, either by screen record or other methods? I understand that this limitation is there for privacy purposes, but in my case I need it to record interviews. Desktop allow this, I know longer use desktop and do not intend to buy a new laptop. Currently the only way would be for me to record my own audio while the interviewee records theirs, and although this has some advantages, I'd still like to learn of simple solutions to the problem that require only one person to do the recording

    When I do interviews over video call, I just put my iPhone on the desk and use voice recorder on that. Works great.

    I gave this some thought last night and am surprised there’s no easy solution to this. It’s a shame that apps like Soundflower or Blackhole haven’t been ported from the Mac.

    Extrapolating from @mistercharlie ’s idea, what if you connect your iPad to an audio interface along with a mic (for your voice), and then record the two outputs panned left and right (interviewee on one channel, you on the other). With a hard-panned stereo recording you could then separate out the voices later.

    I know no one uses Skype anymore except my work I'm pretty sure (not positive) that Skype allows recording of the conversation!

    Most collaboration apps like that do, but it’s usually a paid subscription to do so.

    Your employer probably pays an enterprise fee for that functionality to be available.

    You’re definitely right on Skype - most companies are dropping it for alternatives. Mine did, but unfortunately they replaced it with Microsoft Teams…

    I'll take a look at Skype, thnx! I don't have my audio interface with me, it's en route back to the UK. Worst comes to the worst I might seriously just pay for Zoom Pro but it really annoys me that I would have to do that. I don't really see how your solution would work though Mike, as one of those recordings would be of the entire conversation, which would have both voices anyway, so necessitate time wasting editing. I could always record my voice using a different mic than the one I'm using for the call and get the other person to do the same. In our field, most people will have a few mics, I guess. It's just a bit of a hassle, would like a simple solution. Annoying that apple make this difficult when it is a standard capability of any desktop computer. Actually, if anyone has a solution for android, let me know please, as my phone is an android. Cheers!

    Does your own voice come back through the audio out? I was thinking it didn’t, but if it does then you wouldn’t need the extra mic.

    It’s definitely a pain that you can’t do this easily on an iPad.

    Ah, that sucks. It would be amazing in so many ways if something like Blackhole becomes available.

    There could be a chance now that audio device drivers have been introduced with the AudioDriverKit framework in iOS 16. But more than likely Apple has sewn that hole up tighter than a gnat's ass.

    I have no experience in that domain but people seems tu use site like Streamyard for recording interviews.

    Thanks, I was thinking that! @ecou yes have heard of that, streaming solutions might be a good path to go down! Apparently Skype can allow you to record calls but the lovely @Krupa agreed to be my guinea pig to test that, we both downloaded the app, but no joy. Couldn't even manage to call each other, seems like a buggy piece of crap. When one of us was trying to call the other there was just no call being received by the other, even though it was ringing on the caller's end.

    Currently, at least, Zoom can only record in paid versions, not in free

    Have you checked if your iPad has any built-in recording features? Sometimes, there are third-party apps that might work, too, but make sure they're legit. Also, for interviews, maybe look into VOIP systems. They can be handy for recording calls seamlessly. I use one for work, and it's pretty reliable.
