The Alesis IO Dock and iPad 2 saga
I'm curious for those with the original Alesis IO Dock with the updated firmware and an iPad 2, what are your upgrade plans? I am still on ios 6 just because I've been chicken, and I don't want to brick it.
The web nor Alesis's forums give any real indication that the io dock works on ios7
http://community.alesis.com/alesis/topics/will_the_io_dock_work_with_ios_7
I did see a video of the the iPad 3 with the iodock working on YouTube...but that didn't really help as I have an iPad 2.
There were a few questions in this forum, but again nothing decisive.
So, I opened up a ticket at Sweetwater Sounds, where I purchased it, and I received two separate responses from two separate support people.
"I have found that iOS7 is not reliable for the Alesis iODock. For what its worth, the iODock isn't the only device that has had this issue, leading us to believe that iOS7 introduced some changes that affect such devices."
"We have seen problems with various audio products in iOS7, and I believe I’ve seen specific problems with the iODock. I would not upgrade. It doesn’t hurt the iO Dock, but may make using it unusable. I think the problem is usually bad audio quality. "
I've had lots of fun with it, but still shying away. My iPad 2 still continues to serve my recording needs.
So, what are your plans? Did you sell or chunk it and upgrade?
Thanks!

I'm spoiled - I have two iPads. An iPad 1 that now basically lives in the Dock. I also got an iPad4 that's on iOS7 and I've wondered why it doesn't work with the dock. Maybe now I have an answer.
So for the iPad4 I bought the iConnectMIDI2+ which I love. And now I can do audio out from iPad1 on Alesis through effects on iPad4 with iConnectMIDI/Apogee Jam. That's the dream right there.
YMMV, but it's $200 for the new Alesis dock and $90 for iConnectMIDI2+. At this point, I would like to get Dock2 but it's just not worth it with other options available. It depends what you want to do with the Dock, but you could get the Jam AND the iConnectMIDI for less than the Dock2.
BAH! Used the web series account. But that's my answer.
@LABeerTV thanks...so you have no choice but to stay on ios 6 since you have an iPad 1... Makes sense. Why have one when you can have two at twice the price? I doubt if I would buy another Alesis product for ios. I wished they would at least take ownership of fixing it. I would even pay for an upgrade if it was reasonable...
@thesammiller...did you mispost? I appreciate your feedback.
I use my io dock with iPad 4 and it works perfectly. I'm running iOS 7.1.2. I will buy another dock as it's connectivity is superb. Works with my Novation 49 keyboards and it accepts my Line 6 guitar when I want to use it.
I'm a bit johnny come late to the party (because I'm a cheapskate). I bought an ipad 2 ($150) and IO dock ($50) on craigslist over the summer. I haven't had any problems with io dock and iOS7, except video out doesn't seem to work. I noticed on the Alesis forum link someone said the solution to audio problems was to turn off apps ability to access the mic in settings. I never allow apps permission to access the ipad internal mic, perhaps that's why I've never had audio trouble with my IO dock.
Thanks for the posts! I should have started this thread earlier in the month...
Here is a bit more hope, but it is in regard to an iPad3.
http://community.alesis.com/alesis/topics/io-dock-with-ipad-3-ios-8-compatibility
I found it interesting that Alesis didn't support iOS7, but they mention they are looking forward to iOS8????
Il'l let it bake for another month to see how it goes...
Thanks again!
Sorry to resurrect an old post in the wake of the infamous @supadom (ha!) but I have to ask. Does anyone here have a tip for physically connecting the ipad to the dock? In the video above, the guy explains that he had to press hard and hear a "click". I just got one from ebay and it isn't connecting. Interesting thing is, it DOES work with a dock extender! So once again, any tips to get the iPad to click into the port properly? Thanks in advance!
I have an iPad 3 that would not fit my new IO Dock at the time, so I googled and found one or two YouTubes that showed how to file off plastic to make the iPad connector line up properly. When I did that, I found that then I had the problem the guy in the video above had: I had to mess around to get it to click in, and it was very much harder for me; it only worked after several attempts each time I pushed in the iPad. It took a lot of muscle, so it made me nervous about damage. But I fixed it! The solution for me, which I haven't seen posted elsewhere, was to carefully peel off the Dock's black bezel (with the Alesis logo) and to lightly reposition it with the iPad inserted. I do not remember if removing the bezel let me file some more stuff off, but that may be what I did, so give it a try and see what you find. Now the iPad slides in easily, works perfectly and doesn't seem in any way loose or likely to fall out. BTW, I do have the sled inserted, but it's been filed down as shown in the youtubes I found.
Wow, thanks @Clam! That really helped put things into perspective. I filed down the sled first, no luck. I successfully removed the black bezel and once again no luck, however, I now can clearly see that I have a solid connection. This is very bizarre, I once again put a dock extender in between the IO Dock (Firmware 1.7) and my iPad 2 (7.1.2 ) and it worked but now I see that I can pull the extender half-way off and still keep my connection. My problem can't be a physical connection, it must be some sort of a software incompatibility.
Why will it work only with a dock extender?
Odd I have an iPad 2 (with a grey unfiled tray under it) sitting happily in the dock and working fine on ios8.
This is weird
The original IO Dock was made to fit the earlier iPads. The tray was added to make the thinner ones fit. The tray was added for the iPad 2, I think, and that's why the 2 fits, but then the 3 came along and the wheels came off--Alesis didn't follow up. Anyway, mine works great and as long as the sound and the midi keeps coming out like they're supposed to, I'm good!
They made a pad for the iPad 3 as well .....
The orignal [grey] ioDock was actually built for the ipad1 - (I know bec. I have one and it still works.) You had to put a physical plastic sheet adapter in it to get the height right for the thinner ipad2. I think you could even mail-order one for the 3. Point is, newer iPads are thinner. My Air works just fine with a 32->Lightning adapter.
Hey I know this is a really old thread, but it helped me out of a jam, so I hope some extra details will help someone else. So it's 2017 and my Ipad Gen 2 went down so I ordered a refurbished gen 3 to hook up to my IO Dock. Same issue's it wouldn't show up. after searching all over to find some info I ran into this thread. So what I did was instead of filing anything down I just pulled the flip tab out of the Gen2 adapter tray, then put the Gen3 ipad into the tray and pushed tray in backwards so the plastic lip on the tray was opposite of what it should be. It required just a little fiddling but sets nicely and indeed allowed the Ipad to connect. So if you have the Generation 2 adapter tray don't file down edges just try fitting it in backwards and away you go. So my Ipad is 3rd Gen running ios 9.2.7 just in case anyone is wondering.
@attic, when you've been running the ipad3 in the IO dock for longer than 45 minutes. Does your iPad3 become noticeably over heated?
