Anyone else getting notifications they are mentioned in a thread when they actually aren’t?
This happens to me all the time here on this forum, I’ll get a notification saying someone has mentioned me but when I click the link no one has mentioned me in days in the thread. And I’ve visited it many times since I was mentioned. Most recently this is happening in the Moog InMusic thread, where I haven’t posted in or been quoted in days but I get multiple notifications to the contrary every day. And no I don’t have the thread favorited either.
Just curious if it’s only me.
Comments
Yes, happens to me too. It's a bug or shortcoming in the forum software -- it considers @username as 'mentions' even if this 'mention' occurs nested in 10 levels of (old and collapsed) quotes.
@username should only be considered a mention if it occurs at quote level 0.
Or level 1 or 2 maybe?
Sometimes you can post a comment/question which will get a reply but then someone else replies to that reply rather than the original comment/question, meaning that you would miss out even if that reply to the reply was still relevant to you…
Difficult to see a solution but I agree it’s annoying when it’s divulged into sillyness 8 or 9 comments later.
Just to be sure, you guys know pressing the little star means notifications, right? 😂
Yes - a bit irritating. Or you can just ignore the notification feature altogether, which is what I mostly do. Is there any way to alter that behaviour, @Michael?
Yep, happens to me all the time. Inadvertently press the star button while scrolling then get all these notifications.
Yes and I don’t have that on for the threads I’m talking about.
Yea top level or 2.
I thought I was getting an abundance of those notifications lately…I changed nothing but I get up to 100+ notifications a day sometimes?
Yep happens here too. As others mentioned it may be good to cap the level out at 2 to keep this from happening. Sometimes I’ll have like 20 notifications on here just from people quoting one of my replies many many levels back.
Maybe @Michael can look into this and adjust some code if it's doable.
Some people used to use a trick to steer people into listening to their music posted in the Creations section. They’d post their music, along with @username of everyone they wanted, then edit the post, deleting all the mentions. Meanwhile everyone still has the notification in their inboxes.
Wow, shady and pathetic
That's a good idea, thanks!
Haha, you gotta admire the balls, yes 😂
Agreed. Worse than my "damn it, no comments yet" shtick. 🤣
There’s an option in Facebook groups to do @everyone which literally tags everyone in the group. It’s infuriating.
Woah!
How did you find that out?
I can almost see you folding your arms tightly and staring at me disapprovingly when you do that.
check if the particular post contains previous quotes where you participated
edit : I see it's already mentioned
Well, sometimes they’d forget to do step #2 and we’d see the post with all of the @usernames included.
Maybe they thought they’d tag people that had previously commented on their creations in the past, and thought these commenters would genuinely be interested in more?
Either way, it’s perfectly harmless IMO, I mean isn’t it?
When I’d get these, I’d take a look and listen to what they posted if I had time. If not, I’d keep scrolling or move on, no harm no foul. After all, browsing a forum about mobile music making is a leisurely activity to begin with, isn’t it?
When quoting a post I try to be considerate and edit out any other nested posts and mentions not relevant to my reply. Doesn’t take too long to edit the markdown.
I've noticed this long ago and took it as another forum software bug not really worth pursuing.
I make an effort to be considerate by removing any more nested posts. The notification is still in each person's inbox.
