Off topic: Quitting the X (Twitter)

edited October 2023 in Other

X (Twitter) made me feel sick with all the propaganda and extremism.
I now finally deleted my account but I’m sure I’ll miss parts of it. I read news from music and tech companies (which are growingly switching to other platforms too) and I liked to see # trends.

Are there any other X quitters in here? Let’s support each other to overcome the pain of losing the good old bird and let’s chat about alternatives.

There's always been loads of extremism and propaganda on Twitter. The only thing that's changed is that it's now coming from ALL political directions 😄

(no, I agree, there's less moderation now, which is both good and bad, or neither 🤷‍♂️)

  • Social media is a complete waste of time and energy.( Unless you’re selling something ofc then it’s a tool for marketing but aside from that I personally find it absolutely terrible)

I don’t consider YouTube social media, it was and is the place to find information but twitter threads instagram TikTok Snapchat are all viruses in the human social fabric

After this week, I have no desire to continue any social media activity again, for good . It has turned into as indicated ^ just all side crossfire nonsense

ABF will be the only place I get info (besides Beepstreet ofc but that’s specially for dRambo) moving forward . Thank goodness no politics or stuff like that enters this forum

That might be true but as soon as it’s coming from anti democratic directions without any kind of filter the platform IMO lost control and is dangerous.
Not a party I want to be at anymore.

    Edit: response to @SevenSystems post

  • I specially wonder if Bluesky is a good alternative. Anyone that had a chance to try it?

I’m not a big fan of Mastodon as it seems rather complicated and I’m not successful finding # trends. Also it’s user number rather seems small.
Threads is not accessible over here in the EU so I do wonder about Bluesky.

I'm no social media fan. But I still find Twitter a good place to keep up with news by very carefully curating the relatively few sources that I trust / follow. My interests are very narrow - only a couple of subjects. I only ever go to the "Following" tab, never the "For You" tab. If something shows up in my feed that I don't like I mute it right away. I'm good at "not seeing" ads but flag those as "not interested" if I see something I don't like. I never, ever post anything. I remain vastly skeptical of everything I see or read.

The way I use it is more efficient and up to date for me than wading through news sites. And far less trouble sorting out what I judge to be acceptably accurate.

  • Mastodon, threads, blue sky are all valid have moderation (as opposed to ex twitter now just x for extreme)

Seriously no propaganda moderation racist extremist trolls about on twitter

I may self gave up on visiting social media

Podcasts have all the content I need and if I need to get in touch with friends and family there’s email and the phone

  • There was less misinformation there before (which comes from all sides of the political and social spectrums) before the decision to stop filtering for it. I’m assuming that decision was to stop the platform from losing users to alternative platforms that allow any content regardless of how batshit insane it is.

Recent studies have shown that Twitter (or whatever it’s called this week) and TikTok are now the biggest sources of misinformation in the US.

Social media is obviously here to stay, but one of its downsides is that we no longer have the more traditional media gatekeepers who used to reject the ridiculous conspiracies that now abound.

How often have we all heard someone say “Why isn’t this being reported by the mainstream media?” Sadly we’ve become conditioned to expect our biases to be pandered to by whatever social media platform is our poison of choice.

That’s the way I used it too. But over the past years I kept using the trends tab more and more until I ended up scrolling through tons of stuff (crap) hoping for some valuable information. But specially in the last while it mostly became impossible to find objective informative posts.

  • The right side of the screen with all the What's Happening and Who to Follow stuff? Doesn't even register in my consciousness. I had to go visit the site to see what it even says. 😂

  • Unfortunately social media can drive very strong emotions in people, even when the content is boldface lies.

Browsing and checking out trends does not keep anyone safe from being dragged into the gutter. In the middle of COVID I found my wife (who is pretty much addicted to TikTok) crying over a video of a guy getting extremely angry because the Make A Wish foundation denied his son because he wasn’t vaccinated. They have never done this and eventually had to put a permanent message on their website stating that vaccination status has never been a condition for them. The piece of shit who was willing to do this to an organization that helps dying children just to spread his anti-vax message was given free reign by TikTok to post without ever being called out for it.

Not a fan of social media sites that have little or no misinformation policies.

I have never had a Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn , Pinterest, Instagram account and I think my life is better for it. The social media I occasionally visit is Reddit but I don't have a account.

I think my life is better without it.

I listen to a lot of podcast and YouTube. A little bit of radio and traditional news site.

    You guys should try it.

  • I also forgot no MySpace or Tictoc.

  • I just have specific lists and I follow specific accounts in those lists and I never look at any other feeds so I have no idea what you people are talking about with EVERYTHING IS CRAZY!!! 😂 I literally see nothing like that at all. I see DevSecOps, Dallas Sports, some comedy, and some audio. That’s it. You choose what you want to see. It’s not complicated. Guard your mind.

  • Maybe we need some help from Michael and make our own 😉

  • I stopped using Twitter/X years ago. It was rubbish back then and according to one of my mates is more rubbish now. Too many tossers there for my liking.

I stick only to Facebook, and mostly only to use Messenger to keep in contact with friends, family, and business contacts. Sometimes I post my Soundcloud links there too.

Other than that, I couldn't care less about social media. Just rubbish all around.

And the fact the ABF isn't social media is one reason why I love the ABF. Sensible people. Topics and threads that interest me. A place to share music and get feedback as well as listen to other amazing creations in various genres. I know I sound sappy, but I love this forum. Cheers. 🍻

I don't know... I don't see much of this stuff. If I do see stuff that is propaganda I am pretty good at identifying that quickly and ignoring it. I also use the in-app functions to let the app know when it shows me stuff I don't like.

Overall I really like Twitter as a place to have music-related discussion and get info. Mind you, I very rarely scroll the feed, tbh, I'm more engaged in discussing with people who comment on my own threads. Insta is more for pics and vids, Threads is dead, any of the other twitter competitors are too small to be interesting for someone into ios music. Now that Twitter has long form posts, it is far more interesting than it was, imo.

This 👆 totally, apart from the last paragraph. For general news I still prefer to read newspapers (online). Twitter is more a place to have a discussion for me

Hahahaha.... At times this place does kind of suit that name 😂

Yeah, when it comes to scrolling and reading around widely for different iOS-related topics, this place rules. You just have to get picky with what you chose to engage with

I quit when Elon took over and reinstated a lot of people I disagree with for multiple reasons. I could see the direction things were going and it just wasn't what I liked about using Twitter. Shame, I had a lot of good conversations there, 5k+ followers so it was a good way to promote my music stuff, and like others have said it was a nice way to keep dibs on certain curated topics like music production, iOS music, etc.

It's been a few months now and I really don't miss much other than talking to a couple people who were only ever available on that platform. The first month was weird, all those moments I found myself stopping what I was having fun doing so I could take a photo and post it on Twitter. Except I wasn't on Twitter anymore. 🙄

It was a real wake up call about how much I was thinking about THAT too much instead of just enjoying what I was doing. And I didn't even post that often when I was on Twitter, I don't know how people can do like a dozen+ a day. No thanks, way less stress and mis-direction now that I don't do the social media thing. And I just take photos for fun instead.

    [/steps off soapbox]

  • Elon didn't simply reinstate far-right extremists and bigots, he amplifies their posts and retweets them.

So retweeting the tossers then as well. 😮‍💨 Yeah, I'm not returning there.

@Gavinski I agree. Then again, choosing who and what to engage with can apply to anywhere online and offline.

For instance, I recently blocked someone I thought was a close friend of seven years. She was absolutely toxic. We had an argument a week and a half ago where she told me I was "acting like a victim" and told me to "grow up". I returned fire. That said, I apologised the next day, and I thought we would both move forward from that.

I checked in to see how she was doing a couple days ago, and she started with me again. Obviously she held a grudge, had a vendetta against me, and acted like I should just "shut up and take it". Blocked. F-ck that. I choose not to engage with that.

He was doing that even before he bought it. He’s just being called out on it more now that he’s enabled so many other people to do it and go further than before.

I’m with @ecou : never Facebooked, tweeted, instagrammed, Tik toked, discorded etc etc. just this forum and YouTube. And the algorithms suck.

I like everything from cat videos and board game reviews to science vids and Adam Neely’s jazz based music theory breakdowns even though I haven’t got a scooby about what he is saying.

I mention guns once, though (okay, a little more than once, Jonathan Ferguson’s amusing ‘ a firearms expert reviews the guns of… xyz computer games’ from the Royal Armoury museum in Leeds is a genuine delight), but still, a minor interest to my majors on Benn Jordan, Red Means Recording, Venus Theory et al) but now my feed looks like the profile of a school shooter. It’s almost as if ‘gun’ likes are weighted more than ‘music’ likes in the algorithms tiny peanut brain.

Result? I’m probably on a watch list somewhere, and it took literally less than a week before I was being offered detailed how-to vids on the manufacture of explosives from household ingredients…

The algorithms are supposed to be smart, but ‘eclectic’ is not in their vocabulary. It just amounts to ‘if you watched this, you’ll like a thousand more just like it, only longer, harder, angrier, more extreme.’ Doesn’t seem too smart to me.

And evincing an interest in guns also sees me being fed ‘anti woke’ shouty men, Jordan Peterson, even that dick Andrew Tate…

    Ugh.

It’s a high price to pay for cat vids and watching a museum curator geeking out over his passion.

  • You guys take your social networks serious!

  • Who watches the watchers.

I can’t believe it … that’s the only thing I can ever remember agreeing with you about. 🫣

  • So I guess nobody is using Bluesky here? That might be the answer to my question already 😄

Twitter deserves to be dethroned, in some ways, but I think it's very hard for that to happen when something has this much momentum. If Elon had only messed it up, it would still be hard to get enough people to migrate to a copycat platform to make it interesting. But he's also made some good changes. I find it very unlikely that any of the existing competition will replace Twitter.

You need some invite code. Right?. I signed up but never got a response.
I can’t stand the “X” move, it’s the dumbest change ever. Besides content moderation issues, the fact that Elon is a complete moron, I despise the name, the new logo, everything is worse. Hope Bluesky is blue… that’d be enough for a move.
