“Floating”
I sometimes ask an Alexa to play music for sleep and I’m usually unable to sleep to the music it offers me. Something in the music pulls me back.
I didn’t start this thinking of sleep music but more like “Floating” in a sensory tank.
The workflow was one I’ve never used before:
- I improvised 2 free piano parts in Staffpad using 2 different pianos.
- I Improvised a cello part.
- … a viola part (I’m trying to avoid a lot of high notes and a soothing tone)
- … and finally an alto flute.
I exported all these parts as audio and MIDI (the MIDI part is what’s new).
I loaded up the MIDI file in Cubasis 3 and assigned 3 parts to Continua using various @Spidericemidas PAD’s for the cello, viola and flute parts and then 2 instances of PianoTeq 8 using Rhodes MKI Chorused presets.
The a loaded the StaffPad Audio and a Cubasis 3 instance in AUM and mixed both ensemble instruments and the Continua backing clones for extra soothing tones. I put everything through
Binaural locator set to orbit the R-L image so R passes to L while L passes to R but at a snails pace.
I added the wonderful Cascade Reverb using the appropriate “Ensemble” preset and some Magic Death Eye Compressor to add some tube color.
This is just the Cubasis 3 rendering without any Staffpad instruments. On looking into the Cubasis instance I see that the alto flute part is rendered using Module Pro… I intended to use a flute like instrument but it’s set to the default Grand Piano… go figure. There’s a piano in the mix.
This one is even more soothing for sleep I think. There’s a market for this stuff if you don’t want any recognition or much of an audience.
And this is the audio as rendered by StaffPad
Comments
I like how the Staffpad track is a bit brighter and has clarity and the Cubasis 3 track has this sense of being filtered through cosmic dust and gases, which darkens it in a warm way, not muddy, and together they pair really well! But if I had to choose which one to sleep to, my choice would be the cubasis track. It has a really nice nocturne vibe to it. Even to just sit in the dark and listen to this is quite pleasant. I hear dissonance in some parts when both tracks are combined, and also, but less so, in the staffpad track.
I like them all, but love the Cubasis one!
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the considered reply. I agree that the sleep value is best served by synths and the soothing powers of Professor @Spidericemidas .
Real instruments are so been there, done that. But there’s an audience that will pay for it if you died in the 18-1900’s.
The merge of synth and real has power to bridge some audiences I suppose.
Anyway, the workflow is a keeper. Recording layers in Staffpad is fun because you can edit in ways MIDI doesn’t support tho’ a good piano roll wizard like @Paulieworld would disagree. And has been pushing me to try harder.
Extremely serene and soothing. Made me think of sailing a calm sea. A boat with a proper cloth sail bobbing aimlessly on gentle waves. Quite a romantic piece in places. Probably fits very well to many different scenarios, actually, because it meanders and is not intrusive. One of those pieces that you can listen to over and over without knowing exactly what's going to happen next because it's not predictable.
Where's @LinearLineman ? He'd love this too, I bet. Very nice indeed.
I fell asleep to it. It’s also maybe because I was sleepy but it worked!
It’s beautiful and slow, nice change of pace from>110bpm stuff
Oddly the StaffPad version is my favorite. But then, again, my predeliction is for minimal effects. It sounds more musical than purpose driven.
Thx for conjuring me up @Spidericemidas. This is really an AI version of myself. Not as good looking but still very useful to fill in for me while I’m hard at work on my time machine. Unfortunately, I’ve only been able to go forward, one second at a time, at this point. Hope everything is good with you these days. You, too, @McD.

@LinearLineman
Thanks for the listen(s). I didn’t create the notes intending a sleep inducing result. I just improvised 1 piano part (the treble clef) and then the bass clef as a reaction to the first and then cello, viola and flute.
After the process of adding synth doubles for the 5 improvisations I noticed to lack of surprizes and the result surrender to a placid mind. That’s when it hit me I might get to sleep with this on a loop.
My preference is the AUM version, then Staffpad and then Cubasis which proves once again that you can’t please all of the people all of the time. Lovely work 👌
Sorry I missed this. I know you pinged me, but I must have forgot. I do that more and more these days.
I have to agree with @LinearLineman. I like the StaffPad rendition. Maybe it’s because I have never had much trouble falling asleep. I like this as a piece of music on its own. It reminded me a bit of the opening of a thing by Ravel called La Valse. Not the music, but the atmosphere. I’m sure you’ve heard it.
Ironically, your last few comments about my tracks with Tony Iovino got me in the mood for some good old fashioned 70s fusion. That is, ludicrously fast and needlessly complex. As I was saying to @GeoTony, I think my stuff has been getting rather boring lately. I miss playing fast. It started snowing today and I got nothing better to do. I can send you some workups if you’re interested in jumping in.
@Paulieworld i doubt I could keep up. Please release the kraken of fusion. I love it.
I thought the comparisons were interesting but I also liked Staffpad the best - sounds great! So does staffpad somehow automatically change the articulations just by you entering directions in the score? say pizzicato vs. legato, that sort of thing? It really sounds good but I probably won't get it- I'd have to upgrade my ipad.
