Koala AU Mac

edited October 2023 in Desktop

I like to use Koala on my Mac where I have a huge sample library. I then export to the iPad. I'd like to bring Koala into Logic on the Mac, but there isn't a plugin. Does anybody know when Elf might release a version that I can load as an AU in Logic?

  • I don't think the developer has said anything about a when or even if that will ever happen. You could ask over on the discord channel but I don't know if you'll get an answer. (I wouldn't commit to anything if I was a developer. That's a no-win situation.)

You might need the app to use that link - I was told it didn't work in Safari.

  • There's a workaround that might be of use.

Get Blackhole - an audio driver that lets you route between apps. Set Koala's output to Blackhole. Set Logic's audio input to Blackhole. You should be able to record to an audio track in Logic. I've tested this with FL Studio, Ableton Live, and GarageBand and it works.

  • Install the iPad version of Koala on your Mac, and you get the AUv3 plugin.

This might be possible on an M1 or M2 Mac but not possible on an intel Mac where the desktop version of Koala does work but there is no AUv3. Some other iOS apps AUv3 versions work on intel (Animoog Z comes to mind) but the dev has to allow it.

There's more to it than just allowing it. Apple provides some tools to make it easier, but it still involves additional effort and the associated maintenance and support going forward. Effort that only benefits a subset of one platform of a multi-platform app, and a free one at that.

(I'm not sayin' it's wrong to hope for and wouldn't be great to have. I'm just adding context.)

  • Thanks. I have an iMac from 2019. ☹️

  • Does anyone know how to record from logic vst's into an existing Koala project or can it only import audio? Rn I have my iPad routing to logic as external device for play back and record into logic from koala

  • aww i was just trying to figure that out myself the other day. i still have an intel version, so i guess it won’t work ☹️

Maybe Apple wants us to buy new devices?

  • You can try Logic through SonoBus VST to iPad SonoBus Auv3. Then what I do (when I use SonoBus) is Drambo Processor > Sonobus To Drambo Processor > Koala - to record directly into Koala. I'm guessing t will work with AUM or similar.

Setup SonoBus to send audio directly from Mac to iPad and it's working a treat. Can record anything directly to Koala Pad.

With Blackhole you can route a DAW's output (or virtually anything you like) into Koala.
