Mac. Have gone back to Ventura from Sonoma.

edited October 2023 in Desktop

I'm a long term Mac fanboy but I find the increased security "features" introduced by Apple got to the point where I found them more of a hindrance then an improvement.

I can't put my finger on it but I felt that performance was also worse on Sonoma.

Backed up my Mac book Air M1, wiped the disk and did a clean install of Ventura. Much better.

(What a pain it is to redownload and authorise your plug-ins. Only putting back the ones I want this time).

This whole "security" stuff is making life insufferable in many ways in general. I mean, take the average process of me sending money to someone else:

    1) open my bank's website
    2) type in my account number
    3) type in 3 random digits of my 6-digit PIN
    4) search the house for my iPhone
    5) turn on wi-fi, open my bank's extremely buggy app, tap on "This device is jailbroken, do you really want to use the app" and "swipe to approve login attempt"
    6) back at the computer, click on "Payments"
    7) click on "Add Payee"
    8) enter the payee's details
    9) enter 3 other random digits of my PIN
    10) back on my iPad, "swipe to approve payee"
    11) back at the computer, enter the amount to send
    12) enter 3 other random digits of the PIN
    13) back on the iPad, "swipe to approve"

I mean, there should be mass protests on the streets against this bullshit!

No, I can film it next time!

No that’s the Six Hundred Trillion black hole in derivatives.

    1) get in the car
    2) drive to bank
    3) fill out forms on paper
    4) wait for available teller
    5) present forms and passbook
    6) receive cash
    7) exit bank
    8) drive to store
    9) enter store
    10) find item on shelf (or not)
    11) put item in basket
    12) proceed to checkout
    13) have purchases rung up
    14) present cash
    15) receive change

I'll take your list of insufferable microaggressions over mine. Just sayin'

Yes, but it could be so much better:

    1) Open my bank's website
    2) provide auth token in whichever form
    3) add payee details
    4) enter amount
    5) click "send"

But yes, maybe this is a "Global North Problem" 😉

  • Where I live, some of my neighbours do it like this:

    1) Buy knife
    2) Steal car
    3) Threaten shopkeeper
    4) Take money
    5) Chased by cops
    6) Crash car
    7) Get caught
    8) Prison sentence
    9) Commuted to suspended sentence on appeal
    10) Electronic tagging
    11) Repeat

This is roughly the process to send money with my bank app. Out of interest, are you in USA? Banking is decades behind the rest of the world over there.

No, but I'm in the EU. It's probably 1000x overregulated here instead :)

Speaking for myself, I'm not seeing any of these issues. Your mileage may vary.

  • From a "gratuitous UI changes" perspective I find Sonoma to be a rather irritating release, but I haven't encountered any performance issues (M2 MBA). That said, LP4m just locked up on me while trying to open a LP4i project, so, y'know, if you're running a critical workflow that you use to make money, probably hold off until 14.1 drops or thereabouts.

Security is annoying and has been getting more annoying, but the alternative is an Internet where you can't transact business. Apple is actually trying to make it better with e.g. Passkeys and biometrics, but the whole industry has to move forward together before we really see any benefit in every day life.

  • Can't blame Apple for individual banks' security implementations.

It takes little time all to send a payment to someone from my bank even in the backwards ol' USA. If I had a bank as difficult to deal with as that one I'd change banks.

Still, I use PayPal when possible to save even more effort and to keep credit card and bank details from being stored as many places as possible. Of course if my PayPal gets taken over I'm kinda in trouble aren't I? 😂

  • My MacBook Air M1 is a lot happier now but maybe because I did a completely fresh install. I might take another backup and try Sonoma again.

Did you ever say which ones and why they are a hinderance? I missed that.

  • I'll stay on 13 for a while.

I was on 12 way too long since it turns out that Stage Manager is the desktop manager I've always dreamed of (YMMV wildly, I can't imagine ever going back) but I don't see anything similarly game-changing (or even the least bit interesting) in 14. M1 Air.

I’m on an M1 iMac and have zero problems so far. All plugins working perfectly in Sonoma. Was initially concerned my Cherry Audio synths and effects plugins might be affected, but that didn't happen.

  • Ditto, not a single issue with Sonoma here.

  • I had to check… I’m on Ventura on my 16” M1 MBP
Probably stay on this till something breaks

  • I have had Sonoma installed for over a week now, and no issues with anything I checked out.

  • I'm still contemplating the update to Sonoma. I'm using Monterey on a 2021 M1 Macbook Pro. It's smooth for me, no troubles at all. But the new version of Logic Pro for desktop requires 13.5 Ventura.

I can't decide...stick with what is working well or chance the upgrade for some important Logic bug fixes and a few new Logic instruments?

Speaking for myself, my M1 iMac has had zero issues with Logic Pro and Sonoma has worked very well.

  • Thanks, NeuM. That gives me some confidence.

Similar here. 2018 MacBook Pro with zero issues after upgrading.
