JWM - The Slasher (Horrorcore Brostep done in Koala Sampler)
This is my latest production in Koala Sampler, and it's Horrorcore Brostep?!? 😱 I made this track for the ABF Charity Compilation. To prove I made this in Koala, check the screenshots.
The way I made this was I downloaded a bunch of roaring sounds from freesound.org and popped those down Bus C. Then I added those effects to really distort them and give them mid-bass. I also downloaded a couple other samples from freesound.org to really encapsulate that whole Slasher Flick feel.
I loaded drums mostly from the Sounds of KSHMR Vol 4 pack. For the calmer "trap section" before the main drop, I used a kick and rim from "The Lofi Box". All those down Bus A.
The 808 subbass is sampled from Lowtone. Down Bus B.
And finally, most of the instruments were sampled from various packs in Module Pro.
I sampled everything into Koala Sampler via AUM.
After recording the track, I mastered it in Cubasis 3 with MagicDeathEyeStereo, Reelbus, and Barricade to -14 LuFS.
If you like it, comment below. Cheers and enjoy!

Well, someone’s been having fun… !
Nice work.
Can't wait to put this on later today. The genre alone intrigues. Re: the cover graphic... is it AI-generated, or original, or...?
Thank you so much mate!
I greatly appreciate it.
AI-generated, not my own. I added the text to it and adjusted the colours a little to be more dynamic, but that's about it really. (Note - I don't claim the artwork as my own, lol.)
Wow JayDoubleUemm, that's great. (Not sure why you think you need to prove how it's made though, if you say it's made with Koala it is)
Thanks mate. Oh I didn't mean it like I had to prove it mate. Just wanted to show off how versatile Koala Sampler is for those who don't know and to help people see how I used it in case it could benefit them somehow. ☺️
👍🏻
Excellent, a veritable sonic slaughterhouse.
Reminds me of the wigged out thing which was Prince’s Batdance:
This was so crazy when it was first released that people were taking the cd back to the stores thinking they had a defective one which was skipping. Hard to recall now how startling sonic jump cuts were once.
What a multitalented genius that guy was.
He was. Gone too soon I'd say. Prince was an amazing innovator!
Yeah, sonic jump cuts weren't really as popular back then and were indeed startling (unless you listened to Stockhausen a lot before Prince released that album 😅 ).
I very much enjoyed that. I find it impressive that you can do that in a sampler. But I know nothing about creating music in sampler.
I find it impressive too actually. I liked doing mundane Ambient experiments in Koala when stuck in my August creative block (nothing I considered worth posting about), but then @elf_audio added the buss mixer, and whoosh! Complete game changer changier!
I'm really loving this new workflow. Instead of figuring out what to make next with "options paralysis", I either have a clear idea of what I want to make, or I sample sounds at random and work with Koala in that manner. The first workflow is applicable to any workflow in any app. The latter workflow is an easy way to break out of creative block, because I'm basically committing oneshot sounds to audio.
The third workflow is more akin to Musique Concrete, which is how I concocted the Brostep bass in "The Slasher". I hope Pierre and Karlheinz would be proud. ❤️
Great comparison. I loved that album and movie as a kid
Absolutely excellent my friend 👏 I’m so excited to hear the project. Gonna submit mine tomorrow hopefully.
I think it’s time to abandon dRambo and Zenbeat for koala ! Lol
Amazing track streak your on man! Really
Nice track! Def jarring vibe, a big plus.
@HotStrange Sounds good mate. Thank you. Did you submit yours yet?
@dreamcartel Thank you so much mate.
I love dRambo, but I only used it a couple times to produce Ambient (unsuccessfully lol). When it comes to modular environments, I love miRack just a bit more. Then again, modular just doesn't really interest me all that much anymore.
I never was able to click with Zenbeats like I did with dRambo. DRambo is rock solid in stability, but Zenbeats let me down the couple times I tried it.
@GUB Cheers mate. I appreciate it. Yep, the jarring vibe is what this track is about given it's my submission to the ABF charity compilation.
I did! I’m planning on also releasing it on my upcoming album which is why I haven’t posted it as a standalone single on here yet
I do have a new single coming soon though 😎
Nice! 😄
Perfect genre title! Very creative! Great track for the compilation too!
Cheers mate. God...I miss the older days of Brostep. I love old school chillaxed Dubstep. But the early 2010s was wild! Now most of today's Dubstep just sounds rather mid, lacking that raw sound design while most producers of the genre rely on Serum. 😂
Apparently we agree on something. Madhouse was brilliant.
Did you hear my track mate?
@cyberheater do you need any help finishing up your project for the ABF Horror Compilation?
Like the good ol' days of brostep
Banging track, brother
I'll keep listening to your latest koala creations to see if I get enlightened
I see I barely scratched the surface, but I recognize its power, even more so when I listen to your stuff
Thanks mate.
Yep, I miss those days. Brostep isn't the same anymore and it sounds cleaner and such, not as gritty as it once was.
Thanks again mate. I love how Koala can go super deep! It's like having an MPC in your pocket. Okay, so the MPC One+ is more fully featured than Koala Sampler currently is, but Koala is all I really need.
I sample stuff with Koala loaded in AUM, and then off I go in the standalone. Conversely one can record samples in AUM, take the samples and transfer them from AudioShare to a dedicated folder in Files, and then load them into Koala Sampler. (I did the latter workflow first until I learned how to do the former, lol.) In the case of Slasher, I sampled a couple of instruments, but the mid bass as I said is all samples I downloaded from freesound.org, lol.
thanks for the walkthrough

I think its absolutely badass that you did the basses from freesound.org sounds
It gives that gritty classic brostep feel and really creative usage of samples
Of course mate.
I don't normally do detailed walkthroughs when I release EPs (god knows I try, lol), but on single tracks I do tend to overexplain everything.
Thanks mate.
Yep, I do like to dabble in various styles, and I wanted to create something rather different for the ABF Horror Soundtrack compilation for charity. Just really put my all into it.
My favorite of your stuff so far. It's scary how much you seemed to get into it
Hehehe. Thank you so much mate.
Just flexing some of my sound design chops, annd yeah since it was for charity as I said above, wanted to make sure I gave it my all. Plus, it's fun to design sounds.
Currently learning how to make one of those Hard Trance kicks like as heard in early 2000s Brooklyn Bounce as I want to release an album sort of like that. (Of course Brooklyn Bounce used Vengeance sample packs, but since those drums lack punch, I want to design my own punchier Hard Trance drums, lol.)
Tremendous stuff. The brassy stabs (hard to explain) reminded me of the sound effects of the alien craft in Battleship. Great production and use of samples sounds as usual 👌
