From a Lyra 8: My Friends Have Grown Weird

…Or is it me?

A whole track built using just this amazing Soma Labs instrument, paired with its’ stablemate, the Soma Labs Cosmos, a ‘Drifting Memory Station’, aka a looper pedal with ideas of its own. No other instruments, soft or hard, deployed. And that was it, except for the very minimal outboard addition of Alteza reverb. The whole jam captured in three overdubs, live, into AUM.

It is dark, though I wouldn’t call it particularly ambient. ‘Low effort’?

Almost certainly.

Still: I think it’s pretty. (And more to the point, not something I think I could easily substitute for using existing apps, Mononoke and Hilda, the obvious candidates, notwithstanding. The best ~~case~~ excuse for hardware.)

What do you think?

  • Interesting soundscape! It made me slightly anxious but I enjoyed it.

  • Only slightly? I must try harder… ;) Thanks for the listen, and the comment. :)

  • I'm not a fan of drones and I liked it a lot. This synth was on my radar since some time ago but I don't think I'm ever going to buy it, no more space and also not enough money :D
    Very enjoyable, great work!

Thank you! Yes, the Lyra 8 is a real box of wonders, and it pairs really well with the Cosmos, being as wayward in its operation as the Lyra is. I’ve got the dinky little Rumble Of Ancient Times too, and that is great. Soma is my fave hardware manufacturer, just edging Error Electronics. Trouble is, it means I’m lusting after the nearly-two-grand Pulsar 23 now…

  • This is awesome. I think these two special toys were made for you!

  • Very enjoyable - those Soma Labs instruments are extremely desirable!!

  • OK, I’m scared! Wonderful, as usual, and I’m now getting hints of incipient GAS for a Lyra - I’d persuaded myself Mononoke would do… and I’m still fighting the urge for a RoAT. Arg!

  • Lovely deep rumbling sounds. Very good 👍

  • Thanks, mall! The deep rumbles are just manually tweaking the Lyra delay up and back down quickly :)
