Thought I would share this tale. I subscribe to Apple Music. A while ago I bought a cheapish Bluetooth receiver feeling smug I plugged into my hifi (nothing too special). Over time though I became tired of the lack of musical detail. Then realised I didn’t know about Bluetooth not being able to play CD quality music (doh!). Thought about this issue a LONG while but because I’m lazy and wanted my music collection to hand on an old iPad Pro I eventually took the plunge to buy an iFi DAC. I remained wary and sceptical but took the plunge. Plugged it in to my hifi via RCA connections and wow on lots of Apple Hi Res lossless the band finally moved in to my living room! I feel I’m finally getting what I pay Apple for. I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea this but for me it’s made me appreciate production values again. BTW Queen albums on Apple still sound crap. Just play the vinyl if this is your bag! Thought I would share for any others out there pondering as I did.

I wasn’t aware of this product… I looked into it and will give it a try. I’d love to hear a lot of content I use headphones for on my TV’s external speaker system without leaving the couch. I should also look for a “Travler’s Friend” kit so I don’t need to get up and take a piss.
Btw, it is worth mentioning that not all Bluetooth audio devices are the same. Some are capable of very high quality audio — some aren’t. There are a number of compression types and varying degrees of “lossiness”. Some Bluetooth audio devices implement only poor-ish quality settings .
Just in case you go down this rabbit hole 😂 I use the DAC mentioned wired into my hifi. It’s a bit faffy to unplug and listen to on headphones on my settee. I automatically get CD lossless if I go wired out of my iPad or phone and into my headphones (note:- wired not Bluetooth) and that’s ok for my headphone listening. If you want Hi Res lossless for your phones my research pointed me to the Audioquest red unit. I didn’t buy this because Richer Sounds recommended the iFi as more suited to wired in. Hope this helps. Similar prices btw.
Hi could you give the specs on this option please? Very interested and would like to research/ follow up. Thanks
Do a web search for articles on Bluetooth compression. Some BlueTooth devices (like AirPod Pros) support a fairly high-quality AAC encoding. Not technically CD quality but much higher quality than what some Bluetooth devices use. Even with the lower quality codecs, the devices themselves will specify the bitrates they handle. My son had a Bluetooth headset where this was quite apparent as it switched to a low bit rate when the microphone was enabled which sounded awful and switched to a higher bit rate when the mic was disabled.
That being said, I avoid Bluetooth audio.
