Is logic now your one app to rule them all?
I know many of you cannot get logic into your current set up and many unlike me are NOT iPad only. For those like myself who bought into this mad none laptop setup thing and use logic, are you, as I am, now using it almost exclusively? I’ve even deleted everything I previously made iPad music related on from my 2012 iPad Pro and wired it into my hifi unit as my main ‘CD’ player! My only use of Cubasis now is to try to extract my old material into logic (FAIL!!). It’s also prompted an old band member of mine from bygone days to finally move into this world and we now have started to collaborate via shared logic projects. It’s a breeze. My only wish is logic had been out when I first embarked on this journey. However as others have pointed out the previous many hundreds of £’s I spent did provide fun, frustration and huge amounts of learning which all remain a worthwhile use of my time and resources. No regrets 🤭

I thought I was going to do this, and go all-in on Logic for iPad when it came out.
Then I got Logic, loved it, so I figured if I like this, I'll love it on Mac.
So I bought a Mac.
I hated Logic on Mac, still do. It's clunky, unintuitive, just major oof. I hope an update brings it into line with iPad Logic..
..actually haven't settled on a DAW for Mac.
Then I started getting more into Loopy Pro on iPad, for live use, and I'm not sure what place Logic on iPad has for me now, as the iPad is just live-use only.. I'll settle on a DAW for Mac eventually and just go with that. I don't want to fork out money for Ableton Live (though atm it's the only one that's fit for my purposes) until Loopy Pro comes out on Mac, so I can see if Loopy Pro ticks all the boxes I need (I feel confident it will.. so why spend Ableton Live $$?).
Not really relevant.
I did have being some all-in Logic on iPad idea in mind, and then it just didn't work out that way.
Drambo is the one app to rule them all! (Logic nudged me to go back to dRambo along with Zenbeats crashing)
It’s fantastic to see how we all love the diversity. I actually think these sort of discussions are useful and provide positive signs for future and on going developers. I in no way would would want to see an Apple dominated market.
I thought I would essentially drop all other apps once Logic came out, but I'm finding that it is my 3rd most used app, and will likely only subscribe as needed for certain song specific features such as tempo changes. Loopy Pro is far better for songwriting, and live performance, due to its insane flexibility in set up/functionality. I find myself recording audio, and editing midi, more time efficiently in Cubasis. Logic has an amazing suite of sounds and stock plugins, and some more pro features than Cubasis; but I find myself not actually needing those on most projects. With Logic being a subscription, I will probably only subscribe ocassionally when needing the extra features. If it was $200 full buy in, I would have bought it, and probably use it exclusively over Cubasis, but I'm having trouble justifying the cost each month when I'm working on a project that doesn't need the features it offers over Cubasis.
Logic for iPad pushed me even further into the Ableton/Drambo/Loopy situation.
It also gave me a stronger appreciation for Garage Band too.
If Logic had MIDI-routing on par with AUM I'd probably use it as main DAW...
When Logic Pro for iPad (LP4i) was first announced, I was excited. When I saw the subscription price, I felt it was fine (where my usual hot take on subscriptions is usually an instant "hell no"). I figured "It's a full on DAW, and $5/month is really nothing for all of that functionality, plugins, sounds, the works". I also assumed Apple would take more pride in their flagship DAW and give us frequent bugfix updates that would justify the subscription.
It usually takes me a while to wrap my noodle around a more complicated app. I tried to wrap my noodle around LP4i kinesthetically, and I found myself often referring back to the manual and asking questions here. I managed to create two songs out of it, finding the process to be rather unintuitive for getting an idea down quickly, especially when I usually start with a drum groove. (No internal Files browser is the biggest hindrance, and trying to create a drum rack was very cumbersome.)
After a month I went back to NS2. I still used LP4i for mastering. Eventually another month later I returned to Cubasis for mastering and let go of my LP4i subscription.
In short, LP4i never really clicked with me and always felt like an uphill battle to accomplish anything. This is only my personal experience. I am glad it clicks for others. I'm also waiting for more bugs to be ironed out and features to be added and may consider giving LP4i another go.
Pretty much.
Logic has been my main sequencer on Mac since it was MIDI only. My god it was fugly but had game changing features and usability. I could never go back.
I don’t use my iPad for music much anymore. But when I do then Logic is the hub.
Nothing else on iPad comes close to what I want from a DAW. Aum is great for what it is but I personally can’t (and don’t want to) actually make songs with it. Just no.
I shake my head at a lot of the complaints, especially when it’s comparing a stock plugin to an auv3 when they could just use the bloody auv3 they love so much inside logic anyway.
I prefer to see logic for what it has enabled on the iPad rather than forensically look for stuff that’s ‘missing’ from the Mac version.
And beat breaker and alchemy sampler are incredibly fun and useful. I’m looking forward to getting those features in the Mac version one day.
In the meantime I can’t think of anything that is missing that is actually stopping me from making music. Quite the opposite. I’m enjoying logic on the iPad as it’s own thing — being able to transport that to desktop with minimal friction makes it the best thing for iPad music ever for me.
I also get that this suits my particular circumstance and that the iPad for many people was attractive almost because stuff like logic didn’t exist and unique workflows emerged as a result.
It’s all good. Use what you like. If you hate logic it won’t affect me and the converse is just as true.
Or you can just keep bitching about how you don’t like Sculpture’s Ui whenever logic is mentioned even though you’ve told us 100 times you will never use logic as it’s so bad.
Whatever floats your boat. If whinging makes you happy crack on…
To be fair toward those making this complaint; in other hosts, you don't have to pay a monthly subscription to use your auv3 plugins. With Logic you do.
I absolutely love it, and I'm very happy Apple finally released it. I've already made a ton of songs with it, and I'm finding it's far more productive for me than any other DAW.
The main surprise for me was how useful the loop recording and take numbering is, it makes my recording process so much faster than anything else. I can just create a loop region, set up my vocal mic or my guitar, press record and then in the space of a few minutes I can record a bunch of takes without needing to stop or interrupt myself, I can just stay in the zone until I get the right performance.
Prior to that I was used to having to stop the transport, go back to the marker and record again, but loop recording is much more effective because you can just keep playing or singing without stopping - it results in much better performances IMO.
Aside from that it's all the usual stuff: the amazing selection of instruments and effects, the flexible routing, tempo and time signature control etc... No other DAW comes close.
To be fair if you don't like subs, there's no point complaining about any of the features as you won't be using them.
For DAW type duties I'm mostly all in with Logic on both Mac and iPad and don't see that changing anytime soon.
Some day I may get an M-Silicone Mac so I can run Drambo on the Mac as well...
I do use them, as stated in my post, just not on every project. I also don't recall complaining. Another thing to consider, this thread is titled "Is Logic now your one app to rule them all?", which seems to me like an invitation to forum members to answer the question.
Sentence of the year!!! Ha!!
But you answered for those that do, so my reply to you was relevant. That's how forums work.
Yeah of course. But if the answer is "No" because you dislike subscriptions so much (which is a fair point), then obviously any other complaints are moot.
It's like saying you will never eat a beef burger as you are a vegetarian. And then complaining about the gherkins on the burger. To state the obvious, if you don't like beef burgers, complaining you don't like the garnish is complaining for the sake of it.
I use Logic on Macbook but I haven't even tried it on iPad. I was waiting for a few updates before trying iPad Logic but it looks like I'll be waiting a while, haha. I hope I like it when I finally give it a spin, but I think it's overkill for what I want. I just want a simple DAW that can host some effects and has an easy UI, good audio/MIDI timing, and a timeline for editing my "music".
I have tried several DAWs for iPad and haven't enjoyed any of them much. I use AUM but without a timeline it's just for jamming. So I'll probably end up with Logic through the process of elimination.
No timeline, no "the one"
Renting software is something I refuse to do, so no.
All iOS software is rented tho
Incorrect. Only subscription software is.
Could you sell me one of your "owned" apps?
Fine
Not the “one” to RULE them all but it’s as good as it gets atm lol
And there’s no ONE app to be fair; not yet but Logic is well on the way…I would BUY it for $100 if they charged for it - that would be an ultimate bday gift . OWNING Logic for iPad : then I would delete ZB3 and Cb3 lol
Simple answer. God no.
Slightly more detailed answer, to not use Tera Pro, FabFìilter Bundle, Toneboosters, Loopy Pro, Bleass, Pianoteq etc, and only use Logic, would rank amongst the dumbest things I've ever done, and, I have done some very dumb things.
no
Obviously not. But I certainly do own it, and do not need to pay anything further. Once and done. Unoike subscription software, which operates just like rented things.
Subscription = adios
You don’t own any software. Just a license to use it. The lifespan of software is pretty short.
Eventually you usually need to pay to upgrade or mothball an old system to keep using the old apps until the old system dies.
The way things are going it won’t be long before all the major stuff is behind a regular payment system. Both due to greed on the one hand and necessity on the other.
I don’t know how we are supposed to think that if we spend $5 on an app the developer should maintain and support that for free forever. That’s a clearly unsustainable business model. Especially at iOS prices.
And then our devices die and we replace them with new ones that won’t run the old apps anymore.
Anybody thinking they’re getting something in perpetuity are just kidding themselves.
In reality and pedantically you don’t own anything you just paid for the right to use it once. The total time you get with that one purchase is an unknown.
A lot of decent iOS software is being pretty much abandoned.
FWIW I don’t like subscriptions for software. Logic on iPad is the only app I’ve ever subscribed to.
As I stated above, I agree for the most part that a subscription price is an immediate "no" from me, but Logic Pro seems different. It's an entire suite of plugins, sounds, and is indeed very useable in its current state once the workflow clicks.
As I also stated above, I wasn't able to click with the workflow. This is my reason why I stopped using LP4i. Hopefully Apple will add Files integration rather than requiring the use of the "hover over" method. Sample Crate is a decent way to address this, but even so, it's a PITA.
I am going to stick to Logic Pro ios, as the Logic native plugs are great and cover so much ground.
The stuff that irks me:
1. Logic Pro Mobile crashes upon closing it most times. Then I have to reopen it and close it again <—PITA
2. Some of the plug in guis need help…
3. That dang back arrow….PITA
4. Moving from Mac version to iOS version is not likely for a few people…as I won’t update my computer to Ventura because it’s really not designed to uplift the I7 processor. Ventura still incompatible with some of my plug ins. So I don’t want a 40% decline in speed because of it. Apple moved Logic pro’s update to Ventura as a bait to switch os, no thanks. Transfer can’t happen, so that ability doesn’t exist for me. Even if I do eventually update, my plug in selection is very very different on both platforms. With nincompoop devs not coming to the tablet….and some of the iOS devs not coming to the desktop daw. The latter being more in line with future proofing than the prior. The future is Apple vision and iOS period and if a software developer doesn’t believe this is so welllllll…I can’t see a bright future for them unless that changes.
That’s about it at the moment, it can become more 1:1 with the Mac version
It'd be nice if this thread could be moved to the Logic Pro forum category. ✌🏼
@thesoundtestroom ?
Yes it’s the one but it also destroyed my auv3 buying hobby which used to be a fun activity.
