Best platform for reaching a new audience?

I've been getting mixed results using the various platforms out there, and was curious what type of experience other people were having. Seems like it's all spread out and watered down.

  • Gotta be either YouTube or TikTok no question. TikTok has the power to make someone blow up literally over night but, imo, YouTube is the best way to create a lifelong fan base. TikTok fan bases seem a bit more fickle.

    In these days though, it’s kinda required to to have both. Plus a Twitter account. And Instagram. And this and that etc etc

  • I’ve answered for myself, but what works for me may not work for others. I joined Instagram knowing there was a thriving modular community on there, and have since found a bunch of iOS people on there too (in fact quite a few modular types use iPads too). But this may not be appropriate for whatever type of audience you’re seeking out. YouTube is also on my list, though I’ve picked up way more followers on IG.

  • @ChimmyChungaFace what do you mean by “reaching a new audience?”
    Unique listens on TikTok don’t translate into sales of downloads. Are you after a following, as in being an “influencer” or a working music producer? Building a Spotify following or selling merch? I think it is smart to have a strategy for all platforms and stick with it - consistency is key.

    Reaching people interested in hearing music.

    Obviously some of the options are specifically that, SoundCloud and Bandcamp for example, but others are used for other things yet still might be good for people looking to listen to music.

    As I say, it all seems watered down and scattered.

    That’s a good observation that I’ve also noticed (modular folks using iPads). I wonder if it’s because of the also modular nature of iOS music making. Especially with AUM which I see in a lot of those videos.

  • Any other votes on this out there?

    Seems like given the tech, and ability to reach people, music should be thriving a lot more than it is.

    I know the whole "free" aspect (read: Napster) of internet music sort of blew up the industry, and made companies reluctant to invest in artists. Still, out of the rubble it doesn't really feel like anything has emerged, when it probably should have. Sure, big investment might not be there, but small labels and independent artists have produced some of the best stuff in the last 50 years.

    Maybe it's all too watered down, as I say, and not really curated properly. Streaming algorithms don't strike me as particularly revelatory.

    Maybe that lack of big investment has hurt, as there are less artists out there to inspire other smaller and up and coming acts.

    Maybe some combination of the two.

    It feels like it could and should be better.
