JWM - Koala Dreams EP (EP 100% made in Koala Sampler)
Excuse me while I faint from exhaustion, lol. Kidding. It has been forever since I released an EP, and I don't really make too much money from BandCamp anyways, so up to SoundCloud it goes.
This entire EP was created in Koala Sampler and mastered in Cubasis 3 on my iPhone 14 Pro Max. Once Marek added in that bussing mixer, it was a complete "game changier". 😂 A bigger "game changier" than Roli Blocks integration into Cubasis 2 in my own opinion. 🤣
Now, I've already posted the first two tracks on SoundCloud as separate uploads, so if you wish to skip to around 9'55" to hear new material, that's perfectly fine.
Anyways, I have more notes in the SoundCloud description about some of the history behind the tracks. Some tracks are far more interesting than others no doubt, lol.
Please enjoy listening and comment below your thoughts.

Oh man I can’t wait to listen. I’ll check it out on my way home from work
Sounds great!
Sounds like a good plan. Lmk what you think once you finish listening. And if you're lady is by you, have her listen too.
Thanks mate. That means a lot coming from you.
See, one of these days I'll see about investing in an MPC One Plus, but right now I'm absolutely stuck on the Koala Sampler workflow. Sure the MPC One Plus can do more than Koala Sampler, but then again do I really need the synthesis engines and the kitchen sink as well? 😅 This I'm unsure of. (Then again, if the tossers at DoorDash will finally verify my driver's license and allow me to finish the application process to be a driver, I can then make some side coin to afford a monthly Affirm Loan payment.)
I mean, if I were performing my music at a live venue, yeah I'd definitely want an MPC One Plus or some manner of flashy hardware controller to look cool on stage, lol. Even better, I could dress up like Eboman...
I just need a futuristic suit that can fit my fat gut, so long as it isn't form-fitting and causes people to go blind. 😂
Anyways, there's something absolutely fun and visceral about sampling oneshot instruments and sequences and even found sounds (such as all the monster growling acting as the Dubstep mid-bass in "The Slasher"). I can create a sound in a synth, or I can simply use a rompler patch. I can run it through effects, or just sample it dry. Commit it to audio and continue sculpting from there, whether adding effects, resampling with effects, etc.
For "Neon Dreamscape", the Vaporwave track at the end of the above EP, I ran all the oneshot instruments (including the bass) through Super VHS to give it some grit and instability and committed those to audio within Koala Sampler, adjusting the parameters of Super VHS per instrument depending on what the instrument called for. I sampled from Korg Module Pro and BA-1. In fact, the bass in "The Beginning" was also BA-1.
(That BA-1 synth is so f-cking simplistic, but the sounds that thing yields are mindblowing and well worth the asking price in my honest opinion.)
And of course I used Lowtone for those 808 basses in "I Spy" and "Nocturnal Pulse" (yep, the EDM track that uses some manner of 808 for a bass instead of some other synth bass, as suggested by AI).
Unfortunately worked much later than I expected to tonight but I set myself a reminder to listen tomorrow. It’s my off day so I’ll listen when I have my morning coffee
Agreed on all your other points btw. Koala is the main thing keeping me from getting another hardware sampler. It can already do so much and then when you consider Dawnbeat, BM3, etc, I think I have all I need.
BA-1 is incredible though. It may be the best sounding synth on iOS right now. It’s excellent. And Super VHS has been a sleeper hit for me. I didn’t realize it until last night but I’ve used it on almost every track I’ve made since it came out lol
Sounds like a good plan.
Indeed, and yet the MPC One Plus looks like a fair bit of fun.
Baby Audio really have created some great plugins for sure.
Just got around to listening, absolutely fantastic stuff my friend. The Beginning and For a Friend are my 2 favorites. Very impressive this was all done in Koala. Did you just export and then master the stems in C3? Bravo 👏
Thank you so much my friend. And nope, didn't export stems. Just simply exported the entire unmastered tracks and mastered them in CB3.
Going to tag @tristan to have a listen to this EP as they seem to be a dev for Baby Audio, and I want them to hear what I did with BA-1 and Super VHS!
Heck yeah! I have 3 projects I’m planning on releasing over the rest of the year. Mostly to just get all my old tracks out there so I can move on proper from them. After that I’m planning on making an EP in Koala as well and of course C3 to master. Rumor is that a big update for Cubasis is coming and I heard it’s a paid update so I hope that means Cubasis 4 🤩 I know people love Logic but C3 is still untouched for me personally. Amazing DAW.
Hope @tristan will give it a listen. They make some really amazing apps. On my upcoming project I probably use Super VHS on at least 4-5/10 of the tracks. Took me by total surprise just how much I ended up using it.
I just came in here after buying a MiniFreak….smh. I didn’t really need it, but I wanted it so there’s that hahahaha. Your tummy tucking music performance idea had me laughing out loud! DO IT!!! You may have loads of fun!
Good to get those out there in the wild.
I wonder what a Cubasis 4 would bring to the table, but I'll probably purchase it so long as it functions on my iPhone like Cubasis 3 does. @LFS could have more info on that but is obviously going to remain tight-lipped.
I hope Tristan hears it too. Would boost my already inflated ego. 😂
The Minifreak looks hella fun not gonna lie. I'd love to get an MPC One Plus myself. Then again I bought a refurbished iPhone 14 Pro Max, and Koala Sampler runs flawlessly on that. I'm typing this on that 14 Pro Max as we speak whilst reclining in bed.
The reason I got a refurbished iPhone with 1TB is to produce music anywhere I go. "Haunted House" on this EP was mostly produced at the auto shop whilst my car was being fixed. Perfect way to pass the 8 hours it took for the fix to occur.
I’m planning on getting one eventually myself. I had the MicroFreak and loved it a lot! I sold it when we moved into a tiny house but when we move out I’m definitely gonna be eyeballing the Mini. How’s it treating ya?
So have you transitioned to iPhone only completely?
I’m curious what it will add as well. I’m hoping mix busses and drag to loop for 2. What else would you like to see?
It hasn’t arrived yet…possibly Friday or Saturday
This is awesome dude!
Yes I have. Although I may buy Pro-R 2 once that's released in case I transition back to iPad or some sort of hybrid workflow.
Such as? You mean on the iPhone, or in Koala, or?
Let us know here in this thread how you like it once it arrives. I'm curious to hear your thoughts on it.
Thank you so much mate. Happy to hear you like it.
I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. It’s a fantastic synth.
What made you decide to go iPhone completely? Some of my all time favorite and most used are iPad OS only so I don’t think I could ever do it personally.
I meant for cubasis 3. What are you hoping the update adds?
The minifreak is killer, love it! it’s my 3rd favorite synth!
Nice! How do the keys feel? I’m going to get one in the coming months. The Micro was great and the touch keys were unique but weren’t always what I wanted.
They feel almost, if not identical to the key step.
I have the micro, this is wayyyy better…
Thanks! I like the Keystep keys. I miss having a nice big/powerful hardware synth around and for the price the Mini has to be the best. Definitely gonna start saving for it.
@MrSmileZ Glad to hear the Minifreak is working out for you mate.
@HotStrange Sorry I missed your questions. ADHD, lol. Anyways, I went iPhone completely as I got tired of lugging around a bag over my shoulder to produce music outside of my flat. The iPhone can fit in my pocket, and I can pull it out anytime, plug in my Airpods, and I can get right to work. Also, playing with Koala Sampler on the iPhone is loads more fun than on the iPad.
And, well, I don't know if there's anything else I really need out of Cubasis 3. It works perfectly for mastering and for vocal recording/tuning.
Ah okay I definitely get that. I only occasionally use my iPhone to produce and as such only occasionally produce outside my house but when I do it’s definitely Koala. Gauss is fun for mangling field recordings too I mostly use my iPhone as a glorified field recorder. But it’s great even for that.
There’s a handful of apps that are iPad only that I wouldn’t want to lose but most of the good ones are all on iPhone. Bram, AudioThing, Koala, AUM, etc.
Minifreak has great bass tonality… and swings hard in its price range. Patches just fall out of it. Also a good starter synth.
The next place i’m goin is the behringer kobol $200 usd no brainer…it has a vibe/sound/color i like. If you have a controller keyboard you are str8! There are youtube videos. Give it a listen, i would love outside thought before i make a final decision.
Kobol? I haven’t heard of that one.
I think the Minifreak and PolyD from Behringer would make a good duo as well. Have you seen the tiny Volca-like synths they’re making too? They look really cool!
Im more into really boutique or weird right now lmao…
Wasp or kobol fits this bill
I’ve said it before… the music you produce is really not my thing but your sheer musicality and production values always make me stay to the end. Great work 🙏 The genre names do make me laugh though 😊
Thanks mate. Can't believe I did all that in Koala Sampler! Fantastic app, although I'm using NS2 for my current "2005" EP.
Maybe I didn't see it, but what genre(s) are you into?
