Anyone use Tascam Model 12(or others) with iPad?

Hello,

Has anyone here tried the Tascam Model 12 (or model 16/24) with their iPad as an audio interface? I see they have been giving it quite a bit of iOS support. For what you get with the price, and compared to the other audio interface offerings in that price range, it almost seems too good to be true… can I really do multitrack recording into my DAW on this mixer/interface? Please say yes. About to pull the trigger after looking at this for years now lol, but I still gotta find more opinions first!

  • I use the Model 16. Works as you'd expect, with separate audio channels running into your iPad DAW (in my case, AUM). I'm happy with it, although I've not had much opportunity to push it hard. They have their pros and cons, as I'm sure you've read about.

My biggest complaint is that the sliders don't control incoming audio levels, only playback levels, so you can't really use them the way you'd use a conventional mixer. No digital Lee Scratch Perry for you. For me, the practical reality is that I mostly am using this as a knobby hub between my hardware (mostly, a modular) and iPad, with the possibility of computer-free recording whether I'm using the iPad or not.

The lack of onboard MIDI can be a serious deficiency for some workflows.

  • Yes. And unlike Model 16, Model 12 is an amazing Midi master. It will keep everything except an SP-404mk2 synced up no sweat.

  • @echoopera also uses Model 12 in his setup which includes iPad and other really great gear combos.

  • Awesome! I love that! Thank you

I still cannot believe this thing exists when other interfaces in a similar price range are like 2-4 inputs still. I keep thinking “what’s the catch” but apparently I don’t need to worry about that. I’ve been holding off on picking up more hardware synths and other gear because I don’t have a good mixer to do multitrack stuff, but the midi sync is just 🤌

  • I have a Model 24 I use with my IPad sometimes, I can have all the inputs going into Logic but for some reason Logic doesn’t see all the outputs going back out to the mixer, for example if I wanted to mix using the Model 24’s mixer channels, but Cubasis does 🤷🏽‍♂️ Auria Pro works but is too unstable, crashes a lot on me.

Do the inputs work with AUM? Cuz That’s pretty much all I use, with some exceptions where I need to use Cubasis

I mostly just record everything with single takes and overdubs because my 2017 iPad cannot handle the level of automation and effect chains that I put together 😂

  • I think I should be able to record my live tracks straight into AUM so I can offload some of my CPU with external instruments, so I can actually do some quality bus mixing instead of having my recordings crash halfway through my jam because I keep trying to make my iPad an “all in one” 😅🤦‍♂️
