This story is absolutely blowing my mind. It's been trending for a couple of days and the CBC show that's been driving it aired last night:

Her 1969 electronic album Illuminations is a stone-cold masterpiece. I last saw her play at a bowling alley in Greenwich. That was strange but she was amazing, and this is both at once.

Comments

  • Absolutely horrific, especially the pedophile thing were she threatens her own (real) family members "if you do your claim that I'm caucasian, I say you were a sexual predator" .. .. ..

  • I will give her the benefit of the doubt for now unless there is substantial evidence from the broadcaster made public, particularly as the First Nation tribe that she belongs to has come to her defense.

Let’s see how it pans out rather than make decisions on initial accusations.

Imagine if your whole professional career has been based on a lie. What would you do to insure the secret stays a secret.
There’s no doubting she put together one hell of a career as a performer and songwriter.

The vibrato put me off… I have this thing about what is and isn’t a good vibrato. I won’t share my list but I have one.

I think Mick Jagger’s singing voice is an insult to real blues singers too. I never could get past that… too bad because it made me ignore the songwriting and guitar playing of Keith Richards. Still… poser comes to mind.

Interesting video. I kept waiting for them to mention another famous person, a well-known seeker of the US presidential nomination, with misrepresented Native American heritage claims, while mentioning several lesser known personalities. It's a Canadian video, but still, you'd think the producers would mention it as there are significant parallels. At least that person eventually admitted regret over it once the truth came out. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I can't help but think that Ms. St-Marie would feel a lot better coming clean. What a thing to carry to your deathbed.

Yeah, that was misguided to say the least. At least she had the decency to eventually say that her DNA test didn’t entitle her to tribe membership, although she would have been better off not even bringing up the test in the first place.

They didn't support her claims. They said to the effect, "if we adopted her then that makes her indigenous to us." That's nowhere near the same as saying her story is true.

As an adoptive parent I can relate to that. Our daughter is our daughter and we're her parents legally and to the core of our beings. We don't claim she came from my wife's womb but that doesn't change a single thing about our relationship and never will. I'd respond exactly the same way if anyone tried to say she wasn't our family.

Let’s see how it pans out rather than make decisions on initial accusations.

It's not going to pan out any way or the other. I don't see anything in that video that could be refuted. Nothing more can be said to prove or disprove her story.

Anyway, the only person it should really matter to now is Ms. St-Marie herself. Guilt has a heavy cost on the soul no matter how successfully it may seem to have been repressed.

Wrong to use it in that way, but we don't know that it's not true either.

  • That video was interesting. The band I was playing guitar for shared a bill with Buffy Sainte-Marie once. She was a lovely person, very kind and passionate about music. Her set was mesmerizing, part crazy electronics, part singer-songwriter. Her voice was intense and strange but it all went together and I really enjoyed it.

The part in the posted video about the letter to her brother was the most upsetting bit. If true, I could understand disowning your family of origin and trying to become someone else. If not true, accusing an innocent person of being a sexual abuser is a terrible, cruel manipulation.

Evidence shows that she doesn't hesitate to lie when it suits her so I have to imagine she is lying about her brother. It's a disappointing video.
