A long melancholy piece for Banjo

In complete contrast to ‘A short happy tune for a Viola’ this features a Banjo Ukulele sample from Decent Sampler.

Comments

  • Disturbing piece. I enjoyed it though.

  • I came for the banjo but stayed for the deep depression.

Oh, I like this! Not so much Duelling Banjos as unconscionable slaughter banjos. I’ve always thought that slow picked banjos have an inherent mournful plangency to them, in a similar way to slow strummed ukes, and you demonstrate that towards the end… but what a glorious, hellacious din to wade through to get there! Fab stuff.

“hellacious din” should be a genre on SoundCloud.

  • This is definitely not your grandparents’ banjo music. That’s definitely really creepy sounding and makes me feel that something really sinister is about to happen.

I still have the unfinished piece that I tried to complete in time for the Halloween compilation. Maybe I should get my banjo out and add to it…

  • Thanks @jdp000 , @McD (again), @Svetlovska and @michael_m . It did turn out a bit darker than I planned Irena , almost treading on your toes 🦶😊
Given two similarly titled tracks posted on the same day it’s interesting, in a very non scientific way, to compare their success (I’m not sure that’s the right word but you know what I mean)

‘A short happy..’ has had 35 views, 2 comments and on SoundCloud 20 listens and 1 like.
‘A long melancholy…’ has had 31 views, 5 comments and on SoundCloud 78 listens and 1 like (and a comment)

So what can we gleam from this… probably nothing but…

If listens are in anyway linked to views then more people prefer ‘dark ambient’ music to happy classical(ish) music?
    Or
the Soundcloud algorithm pushes ambient more than classical (they were the tags I used)?
    Or
    people prefer Banjos to Violas?

Also I find it interesting (and gratifying) that people are happy to tackle a > 7 minute track more than a 2 minute track. I thought it would be the other way round.

All of the above is probably a load of b(*&^cks. What do you think ?

  • I can definitely hear this in the soundtrack of a horror or sci-if movie. Nice

  • Amazing piece ! I really like the moment when both piano and banjo emerge and converse for a while until they end up completely washed away.
To me the piece is not melancholic, it is pure Darkness. The first part is really creepy, I could easily imagine an obscure scene with people gathering in a satanic incantation ceremony preparing a virgin sacrifice. 😈
