Very limited but sounds quite nice and it’s quick, easy, and AUV3.

Yeha I’ve become a big fan myself. This isn’t a game changer but for free it’s nice. Always love a good free AUV3 :)

  • Hmm. I’m a bit wary of GSi after what they did with Free Vibes, ie changed the sound after people had started using it and then wanted a large IAP unlock to be able to revert to the original sound.

Normally I try not to criticise free apps - I mean, they’re free, but this had an air of bait-and-switch that has put me off.

Ah yeah I forgot about that. Definitely not a good look. I use their organs all the time, they’re my favorite on iOS and some of the only really great Vox and Farfisa clones you can get. And Just Piano is my main piano app.

As long as it doesn’t become I trend I think I can settle but if it happens again, I definitely couldn’t continue supporting it. I’m hoping it was a one time thing.

Me too. I’m hoping they’ve learned from the reaction!

Let’s hope so 🤞 they make some great apps so I’d hate to see them butcher their reputation.

Agreed - it felt very bait and switch. People often share free apps to support devs and reward them for making it free, but when a dev does something like that, you feel you have been manipulated. Once bitten, twice shy, indeed! And btw, I deleted this new app within seconds of downloading. Nice idea maybe, to do something for kids. And not to say it wouldn’t have uses, perhaps, but I would personally just grab the Geoshred or Swam saxes. This has zero potential for sounding like an actual sax in most use cases.

Eh I think it sounds nice. It’s a simple sampled sax so I didn’t expect any more quality than the price suggests. And in that way, I was surprised. I wouldn’t pay $10 for it but it sounds decent enough. In a mix with various other noises or sampled and pitched down to the depths of hell, you’d never notice.

Do wanna point out, at the price points the SWAM stuff goes for, not a lot of people can afford to “just grab them”, especially in these times. Nothing against you, just wanted to mention it since I don’t want anyone feeling any type of way about not being able to or only being able to afford this.

True true. Should have left out the 'just'!

No worries! I only say that because it was mentioned to me once by someone who couldn’t afford something and I’ve tried to avoid that ever since. Never know how someone else feels about it haha, it can be a touchy subject for some.

    Hope it’s not a granny smith 😂

  • OK, I realize this is a saxophone. But the polyphony is somewhat broken? Try playing two keys at the same time on a midi keyboard (if you play them not at the same time it works with both notes sustaining).

Not at all relevant, but cool Coltrane excerpt here:

    Not working for me either.

  • This sax sound did not impress me. I already have a SWAM tenor sax which is the gold standard. Sensual Sax ($5 USD) sounds better too, if you like a cheesy sax sound. I like almost everything from GSi. I wasn't angry/frustrated about FreeVibes and still think it is a good free app. I think people were way too critical of the developer for adding an optional in-app purchase.

This free app was put out to support a local music program in italy that Guido is working with. He’s using the App Store to make it easy to get. Hopefully, it’s the first of many apps that he spins out for this music program.

I just picked up his “Solo Trumpet” modeled brass instrument program and it’s great. It has some of my favorite jazz solo instruments: Flugelhorn, two types of muted trumpets (harmon and straight mute) and some jazz inflected articulations along with classical trumpet, trombone and tuba for $19.

Oh that’s awesome! Thanks for sharing that. I saw the description said there were more to come. I wonder what’s next.

That’s the only modeled instrument of theirs I don’t have yet but it’s on my list. I really love the AudioLayer brass instruments, but those sound excellent, so I’ll probably pick it up soon. Especially if there’s a Black Friday sale. Hope they’ll put out a Sax at some point.

Agreed on people being critical. Also agree on the sound of the sax but I’m a sucker for cheesy sounds sometimes lol. I have Heavy Brass and Thumbjam for most of my Sax stuff but really would like some of the SWAM instruments at some point.

It wasn’t the addition of an IAP that was the problem. It was changing the free sound, so if you wanted your projects to sound like they did before the update you had to buy the IAP. If they’d just added the ISP and left the sound alone, no-one would have minded. And probably more people would have bought the IAP, instead of just stopping using the app and treating the dev with caution in future.

  • The thread on “Free Vibes” shows that the original sound got a lot of negative reviews. Opening up the app to adjust the model is a real gift. I can understand people that liked the first release might get their nose out of joint.

GenuineSoundware (GSi) seems to be a focused developer named Guido Scognamiglio. The IOS portion of his business seems pretty recent. He’s been making Sampled instruments for Crumar keyboards and others since 1999. I’d like to see him make more IOS products. I picked up “Solo Trumpet” this week and it’s wonderful. It exposes the Models parameters as well. PianoTeq does this and each instrument costs $49. So, I hope GSi keeps opening the model on more and more instruments.

Agreed. I’d love the see them release a modeled Saxophone app next. VB3 is the best sounding tonewheel on iOS, imo. Especially for the price the V1 is.
