Sketchbook II

Back in September, @McD gave me a folder with several of his StaffPad sketches for me to create a collage. This is my second collage of his compositions, hence the title. It contains eight sketches arranged on a timeline in Cubasis with overlaps, fade ins, fade outs, and a few effects. I mixed these with the volume a bit lower than usual.

  • Dreamy… your productions skills continue to amaze me.

If anyone else would like to create a Sketch from the folder just DM me. I have had one request already. You can chop the material in any way that inspires you and add your own art supplies as you wish.

Thanks again @Paulieworld for investing time to create a new work. After this your collab with Bill Saunders played and it’s totally different than anything you have posted here:

    https://on.soundcloud.com/Q6Lw8SRVcwpEKhoU7

It has lyrics and a vocal and is about something.

  • @McD Thanks, bro. I enjoyed every minute. After a crappy day at work, it was very relaxing, almost mindless. I just selected some sketches from the folder that sounded like they would fit together, and dragged them into Cubasis. After that, it was just moving them around and trying different combinations. Like I said, very relaxing. Your choice of key and time signature made it easy. I would encourage other forum members to take you up on it.

I really enjoyed my collaboration with @BillS. It was unlike anything I’ve done before. Bill is pretty much a one man operation, so it was nice of him to work with me. I thought it turned out very well. It’s getting quite a few plays.

  • @Paulieworld @McD congrats guys! Just like the first one, this is fantastic!

(May get with you on that offer sometime McD :) )

It’s actually pretty tricky to mix from.a collection of tracks… I’ve tried it and given up more than once. @Paulieworld makes it look easier than it is.

  • Nasrudin went to the shop of a man
who stocked all kinds of bits and pieces.
"Have you got nails?" he asked.
    "Yes."
    "And leather, good leather?"
    "Yes."
    "And twine?"
    "Yes."
    "And dye?"
    "Yes."
"Then why, for Heaven's sake, don't you
make yourself a pair of boots?"

"Why Don't You?" from the Pleasantries of Mulla Nasrudin

Oh I’m quite sure. You said chop in any way and it just gave me some ideas for sound collages 😆

Yes. I suspect there’s some useful material for manipulations and collages. I just hope I’ll detect notes that sound familiar in the resulting work.

Oh of course! If I did something like that, I would still keep it faithful to your work :) think maybe The Avalanches/Plunderphonics sorta

  • @HotStrange I hope you get a chance to give it a try. @McD has quite a selection to work with. I prefer the StaffPad compositions, myself. If fact, if you would ever like to try something with any of mine, please feel free. Let me know and I will flag them for download. Have fun!

Anything created in StaffPad can be exported in stems of Audio or MIDI too if anyone wants to re-purpose the MIDI. I did that recently taking a StaffPad work and re-hosting it in Cubasis and assigning AUv3 synths. It takes an orchestral work and makes it more modern and evocative. I also combined the Staffpad and synth renders together to add more depth to the standard orchestra soundscape.

@McD I prefer to think think of your sketches much the same as object-oriented programming. Each track is a black box. I don’t mess with the internal coding. I just like passing parameters between them. It’s fun and relaxing.

Doesn’t this basically describe “cutting out the middle man”. Imagine if you went to the hardware store and they closed the doors to build houses.

I do however like the “Teach a man to fish…” parable that focused not of the means of production but education as a way to change lives. No where in this parable does it understand that “making boots” requires a set of skills most do NOT have. Neither the seller of materials or the buyer of them. The Bootmaker must be an apprentice to a master show maker.

    I have a tree… why don’t I make a guitar!

  • @McD A middle man requires at least three.

The hardware stores will all be closed soon. Get what you need ASAP.

Teach a man to fish… and eventually he will eventually make Lobster Bisque… and charge $29.99.

Had a few. Have a nice night, bro.

The guy selling nails, leather, twine buys them from the manufacturers so there are easily three parties from manufacturer to
seller to buyer. In reality for logistical benefits there are also distributors so the manufacturers don’t have to get involved in so many transactions. They just ship batches to selected distributors that manage deliveries to sellers.

Amazon turned this world on its head by linking distribution to direct sales and cutting out 2 other tiers of the previous retail sector. The smaller retailers and chains are slowly falling over in the US.

Thanks guys! A bit busy on finishing up my upcoming project but will definitely be considering this once that’s all done with. :)

  • Another great collaboration… no idea where your work starts / stops compared with @McD and it doesn’t really matter. The end result is a powerful piece of music 👌

Me either. It’s not for everyone, but I like it.

It’s like you give @Paulieworld a collection of photos and he scans them into Photoshop and makes a collage. Sometime images are overlayed and you can see one through another. I highly recommend more creators create a shared folder and open it for @Paulie to sift through. You “see” your creations in entirely new ways and the mix of surprises and recognition is a lot of fun for the creator that shares.

  • Remarkable! Beautifully crafted.

  • @McD @bygjohn Thanks guys! I think it works with your orchestral sketches. They seem to lend themselves to this sort of thing. It may not work as well with other types of material. I really like the end results. Reminds me of Ives. I must sound like a broken record when it comes to his music. I like that he was just a working man by day, and wrote music when he got home at night. I can identify with that. He didn't get much recognition until he was dead. Maybe I'll be discovered after I'm dead. Ooooh... I can hardly wait!

  • I had to bump this. I hadn’t listened to it in quite a while. All original material by @McD. I added absolutely nothing. I just “arranged” what he gave me. It’s killer!

What you do is NOT arranging. It’s more like collage:

Collage (/kəˈlɑːʒ/, from the French: coller, "to glue" or "to stick together" is a technique of art creation, primarily used in the visual arts, but in music too, by which art results from an assemblage of different forms, thus creating a new whole.

    “Look ma… a new whole.”
    “Don’t touch it.”
